  1. I'll stick to what I said. I've had a bit to do with making "special" exhaust systems. I did NOT use the word "Popular" either. Taxis Had Heavier electrics and Plastic floor Matts etc. They lasted because they never ran cold. I've seen Taxi XD V8 waggons do 1,350,000. Most taxi's did not use the V8 engines. Most were on LPG in Victoria. All Falcon 6 exhaust Valves were Inconel .Taxi owners don't spend any money they don't have to on their vehicles. Oil stays very clean when you run on gas but still gets sulphur in it, which can pull the lead out of copper lead bearings. Nev

  4. Stainless "Fatigues" more Quickly than Mild steel .That's why stainless systems didn't catch on with Cars. Some Mufflers are aluminised. Makes them last a bit longer. Short trips will Wreck your exhaust system.. Nev
  5. YOU did bring the surface finish up. If the bottom surface doesn't match your Planes surface, scribe it and reshape the surface so it does, It wouldn't take that Long. Nev
  6. You can't take Photos out of an open front hinged door and they sit a few Inches open unless you sideslip towards it. It can also distract you and freak you out a bit. A door that Hinges at the top and clips to something will stay there, slipstreaming. This is Only with a highwing configuration. A door opening over a low wing will be in a Low pressure area and hard to close... Dealing with a non secured door should be Part of your type training . if it's possible to occur. Nev

  8. You won't weld it with Oxy. You need TIG and the correct rods. In cooler Parts you can use nickel bronze on SS. That eliminates the exhaust system, pretty much. Nev
  9. So is the stuff originally used on Veteran American motorcycles. Over lander always made his exhaust systems in SS. SS systems tend to crack rather than Corrode. Nev
  10. There are Plenty of good aspects of gliding, but on the other side Plenty have never done if or flown a tailwheel aircraft either. Simply put, Canberra is not the Ideal Place to Learn out of. IF Money is not the Limiting factor I'd go GA and do a thorough Medical first. BAZ may WANT to WORK as a Pilot, eventually, which will be via a CPL and some rating or other. Instructing is a worthy and rewarding ( Not very so financially) activity if you enjoy people and are Patient with them. You are also motivated to keep UP with everything because People expect you to answer their Questions. Charter puts you is a Position where you often fly when you don't quite want to and to Places you would rather not go.. There's nothing quite Like flying though. It can be very addictive. Be warned. This might be a life changing move. Get that PROPER medical done first\, then get your Student Licence.. Nev

  14. It's a very neat exhaust system as I recall it. Vibration in 4's is worse than sixes. IF it's Stainless it cracks faster than mild steel but it's available in thinner wall thicknesses than MS and corrodes less. Nev
  15. The training is NOT the same as VH skip. VH endorsements flow to RAA but not the reverse and there's no aeros, steep turns, spinning unusual attitudes(of Planes) etc permitted in RAAus, The RAAus CERTIFICATE is not ICAO compliant There's more hours to get a PPL, I doubt there's any RAAus training in Canberra or ever going to be. At any busy place more time will be spent on the ground waiting than otherwise would be the case and because of traffic your airwork will also be compromised. Maybe there's a little used aerodrome within flying distance that could be better for training at? Moruya? Cooma ? Nev

  18. Using a toothbrush with solvent could well have been the Problem. It would leave a coating of dissolved plastic that would form carbon. Air cooled motors in particular, need a good antiseize when they have alloy heads especially with aircraft which run hard. Copper is just ONE of them, originally made by AMPOL a LONG time ago. I'm sure there are as good (or Better) types available since then. I use a very expensive and Heavy silvery product these days. Excess amounts can short the Plug out if it gets on the Insulator. Tension the Plugs correctly. Too loose and the body of them can run hot and cause detonation. Nev

  23. I wouldn't Cram it as a recommendation and you Need consolidation after or it May Be transitory. If it's a Heavy Learning period, after about 50 Mins in the Air you are wasting your Money. Nev
  24. Backfiring them when starting is a really bad thing and Probably is the Cause of most failures and also High revs at near closed throttle over loads the Big ends. They are Happiest at cruise but can be a Handful when you are Looking after 4 of them.(DC 4/C 54) in icing conditions. You are constantly adjusting the Cowl gills. Oil consumption is High. Oil transfer in-flight capability,. Turbo Prop must be a Blessing in crop work. Beavers and Grumman Ag cats and Percival EP9s. I'm an AG Cat and Grumman fan. The EP9 had an Anson motor fitted. The Hair stands up on the Back of my neck when I hear a multi radial engined Plane take off.. Had about 5 engine failures in 1900 hour's plus numerous other serious Failures. Hydraulic/Electrical/ fire/ Icing fuel leaks. Too Many. Jets are Much safer but I'm Glad I experienced it. Nev
