  1. Just a stunt to make people buy a high Priced option. Has NO bearing on Normal USE. Rotax would not consider it a normal Operational Envelope. What pressure was the coolant system at and how was the Oil Prevented from freezing as well as the PILOT. Any Motor Boosted sufficiently would maintain Power. The OAT would be Minus 56 c and the pressure 2.7 Psi. Nev
  2. Racing cars don't FLY and you can call of an event if the weather is bad.. NO comparison at all. When a little Plane takes off from somewhere non controlled there's no way to stop them or KNOW where they are going. Nev
  3. I would NOT Brush off the Mt Beauty Event. I believe the RAAus had little control of it, in Reality. THAT person was always going to fly, almost No matter what. The flying conditions were the cause of death. Nev
  4. You fly 'Visual" Mostly by reference to the Horizon. The Artificial Horizon replaces the true Horizon when IFR and that was referred to as "ATTITUDE Instrument Flying".. You are correct about the Primacy of what the eye sees in Orientation. Everyone thinks they will be able to SENSE which way is DOWN when in Cloud. WRONG. Dynamic Loads come into Play and your Inner ear semi circular Canals and the "seat of the Pants" feel Play tricks on you. The Pilot MUST absolutely TRUST the Instruments and a GYRO is an essential Part of it for "rigidity" in space. Hope this Helps. Nev
  5. Lambourgini never set any great records for reliability. Sharing lubricants makes things unnecessarily difficult. I think that GEARBOX IS separate. It appears to be sealed off. Gearbox cases have to be very strong. and it's probably East West & FWD. No bevel Gear. Nev

  7. Long studs have been breaking. The alloy engine Parts expand more than the steel studs do thermally and they stretch. A fairly common problem in such situations. Nev
  8. Some outboards Have split Big ends even though they are roller, other wise the Cranks would have to be pressed up. Heads are often gasketless with 'O' rings .You can have lots of studs as the Ports are well away. Nev
  9. Over stressing WOULD occur., Whether the damage shows is another Matter. Aero engines that have exceeded the RPM Limit are Junked whether they still run or not. Crack testing doesn't show everything. Aero engines are Built as light as Possible, consistent with reliability. Nev

  11. Beware of going low. Don't practice to below 200 ft till you are VERY good at it. It requires very good control of Airspeed by precise pitch management. The controls are very crossed up .The Rate of descent is much higher. Recovery to the flare has to be very controlled and precise. Many people who think they are sideslipping are Just doing an ugly SKID. I've often asked pupils and other instructors to do one for ME and MOST FAIL dismally in doing it Properly. IF you have flaps or a very draggy plane you don't need to do it. The Wing must go down first and you stop the Nose falling with rudder. The correct speed should be low but safe. HIGHER SPEEDS stress the Plane. This requires LOTS of Practice to get right, and you won't get it right IF you are NOT taught it Correctly. Practice at Height till you are real good or you will hurt someone. Nev

  17. Isopropanol is an ALCOHOL and won't mix with Wax, Petrol or oils other than Castor. It's a solvent for shellac. But that's not much help. Nev
  18. Why paint ALL of the surface IF it's alclad? Nev
  19. Head gaskets are the Weakness/Failure spot in Many Motors. Bolts etc compromise Port size, position and shape. . Nev

  21. The Merlin has no head gaskets. Each Bank has the cylinders and heads made in one piece and held to the case by long studs. Nev

  24. POP Rivets are a bit crap anyhow but have to be used in some Places, because of lack of accessibility on the inside. Nev
