  2. So, after all this time, you've fired RAA as the administrator?

Not at all Tubb. But isn't it now clear that the CASA just allows RAA to exist to delegate a bit of authority and allow the members to fund their own administration and thereby save the CASA shiploads of cash, but the CASA retain the power of overall administration & can step in about whenever Lee decides that it should happen? An example is that Lee happily ran RAA under the hopelessly inadequate paper registered filing system and then knocked RAA's head off with a baseball bat when he decided that such a system suddenly became inadequate. I also recall that Lee even called the RAA's second level staff together to have them act directly for him when an issue arose 3 or 4 Natflys ago.

  3. Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but is it correct that the CASA themselves have made this move and not done it through the delegated authority which rests with RA-Aus?

I would have thought that the correct course would have been for the CASA to bring this issue to RA-Aus's attention and request RA-Aus to regulate the recreational community while the CASA regulate the VH community.

Why have a dog (RA-Aus) and then bark yourself? Or doesn't RA-Aus have the necessary powers to take appropriate action.

  4. Captain. If I hear the argument " Plenty of owners dont have trouble" again i swear im gunna jump off a bridge. So THEY BLOODY WELL SHOULD. This is a certified aeroplane engineinstalled in factory built aircraft. Unfortunately, plenty DONT. If that wasnt the case, we wouldn't be having this discussion, and CASA would be sharpening the knives in the back room.

My comments related to an occurrence I HAD. A 3300 certainly did 'grenade" and had 6 channel monitoring while it happened, so I could see the pot go thermal nuclear.

After being one for the cooler pots for the life of the engine , so yes, the monitoring did probably save a REAL engine failure as we didnt depart with the alarm bells ringing..

I apologise for the 'digs' but they are based on actual experience, not just hearsay etc.

"Plenty of owners don't have trouble." ........................... now which bridge and strap this GoPro on please.

Just joke'n .......... as we all love you like a sister.

I have never indicated that 6 channel monitoring would save any engine, but I know with me that it certainly led me to higher speed climbing and no power-off descents.

  5. Yea. Engines fitted with 6 channel monitoring don't fAil aNd spit head bolts ... Oh ... Wait.... Yes they do.. But at least you get to watch your engine grenade is awesome 6 channel resolution...

    Motza

You may have had bad experience(s), but I consider it ridiculous for you to indicate that all 3300's will grenade.

That is just plain untrue and there are still many owners who haven't had your issues.

Could J have done lots of things better? Too right they could have, and I hope they still do. (If mine had needed the heads to come off I was going to then replace all valves with high quality motorcycle racing valves).

Was the CASA Fatwa clumsily heavy handed and did it lack any commercial sensitivity? Too right it did.

But this feeding frenzy is building up to unreasonable proportions with a number of Rotax owners seeing blood in the water and appearing to take a bite while gloating, and other non-J owners having a nice old unobjective dig.

  6. On the Jab site it's called the "Option A" panel.I didn't find the bit where it says that if you buy this one you are either a cheapskate or an idiot and that you should not be surprised if you have overheating problems .....

I had no trouble arriving at what was really an engineering decision to fit 6 X CHT's and 6 X EGT's to allow me to best understand and manage my 3300.

If others are incapable of making such a decision that is their issue.

Mind you, I may have been wrong in arranging to do that, but I still feel that this is essential and would do the same thing with a 912/914 or any other engine in order to monitor any short & long term changes and trends in order to pick up issues early.

  7. For goodness sake Myles just spit it out...sorry..... Keith just spit it out!

So when "Keith Page" signs off as KP, is he really meaning to type MB?

And if Keith is starting this thread by including criticism of Staff and some current Board members, and if Keith Page is really a disguise or mouthpiece for Myles Breitkruetz, the disenfranchised former board member who has also made some noises about starting an organisation to take members away from RAA, then I think that Keith should consider coming clean.

On issues such as this where RAA Staff and Board Members are being criticised by non specific innuendo, I think forum members are entitled to know who is who in the zoo.

    Over to you Keith.

  8. ........... I get hold of some good information ............

    Keith,

You opened this thread by saying "I have heard some snippets of information being bandied about, ........... and if it is true .........." and now you say that you have "..... some good information ......".

That indicates vast differences in veracity to me, so which is it, good accurate info or scuttlebutt?

And I disagree a little with Turbo here. I reckon that it is quite appropriate for RAA Staff to have a chat with members who are doing the wrong thing and correct them in a more or less convivial way (if that member is receptive to such a chat). RAA staff should go out of their way not to adopt the CASA chip-on-the-shoulder, high-handed, wanka, mine-doesn't-stink approach to encouraging or requiring RAA members to comply with the Regs.

    Regards Geoff

  13. Here's the thing: air in the duct undergoes very little compression. As you found, it's necessary to lower the pressure in the cowl, to "suck" the air down through the fins.

That's what I found. It is as much (if not more) about helping the air to get out of the cowl as it is getting it in.

Once you get good airflow through the ducts and cowl it's then about getting more of the air down over 3 and 4 on the 3300.

I wish I had done a bit more on a deflector in the duct to facilitate that, as I always had more then enough/too much cooling going past 3 & 4 and on to 5 & 6.

  14. Okay. Let's be specific. Name one good thing about Jabiru engines, apart from being - apparently - affordable.

    They use Avgas.

It's still got me beat how 912/914 owners go cross country touring, as you just HAVE to get sick of arranging ULP wherever you need to refuel, or do more airports have ULP available these days?

When I bought my 230 I also felt that other advantages were ... no gearbox and the fact that they were relatively low revving + air-cooled. (I also spoke to numerous owners and schools before I purchased and to a man they all offered nothing but praise for the engines and airframes.)

  16. OK 7500 it should have been.

To just take this a tad further while we are all waiting for CASA's next Fatwa on the J issue(s), or one of J's responses that all is hunky-dory, the definition that I can find in the Regs states that "Cruising Level" is "A level maintained during a significant portion of a flight".

How big is "significant" in aviation cruise level terms?

By my dictionary "significant" appears to mean "having or expressing a meaning; indicative, having a covert or implied meaning; suggestive". or probably more relevantly "important, notable, or momentous".

So if you level off at any time to avoid traffic is it significant, important, notable or momentous and are you therefore then in "Cruise"?

And by extension are you therefore likely to be considered by some forum members to be at a "Cruising Level" whenever you are not climbing or descending?
