  5. A lot of the value of this forum is all the old posts. If posts are lost or not searchable after the migration then this forum loses a lot of its value.
  6. I, like mainly people, do not see a big difference between RPC and RPL. I simply ask what gets me were I want to go ? I just converted my RPC to RPL which required; extra 3 hours solo cross country including 100nm trip with 2 full stops, ELP assessment (bye $150), an hours online course and $10 for med 5, lots of photocopying and $50 to process my CASA RPC to RPL form. Still need to sort out a BFR. Then I could fly a Cherokee if I wanted too. I will probably end up with something in the 600-760kg range, basically a LSA with a decent amount of fuel and luggage. I may get a 4 seater if I can get the money together (more luggage and 2 dogs). Main driver for me is controlled airspace/aerodrome which is coming to RAAus (when?) but does not seem to be being driven by RAAus (why?). RAAus group G requires a LAME so no advantage over CASA registration. Why would CASA want to go down the MOSAIC route when we are already there with RPT and med 5 ?
  7. That article does not really explain anything except perhaps to indicate that RAAus believe they will be a player in this bigger space. With the Class 5 Medical (inclding the speed with which it was implemeted) if I worked for RAAus I would not be holding my breath.

  10. RAAus has an online L1 course. It is generic and really does not give you any information about the Jabiru, or any, engine.

  12. The 1 second gap switching the fuel switches my not be as significant as some suggest. Time is normally taken from the GPS. Many GPS only grab the GPS output once a second mainly cause it takes time to calculate the position and forward it to other devices. If a second action (second switch?) occurs 2-10 hundreds of a second after the first it may 'wait' for a GPS time to log it. Also 10 seconds to identify a non-standard engine condition, think about it and then react correctly is a very short period of time. We dont know what we dont know.
  13. I think you will find it is actually 759.8 kg. So not so much a calculated real world MTOW as it is a "neatly shoe horned in to a class where it will sell" MTOW. PS not suggesting that literally every other manufacturer is not doing exactly the same thing.
  14. Often it is not about what it was designed for but how difficult/expensive is it to do the new paperwork.
  15. You probably want to clarify this. I have seen retail ads which say the GTX45R comes with an internal GPS but the information on Garmins website says it has no GPS. While it displays on the G3X Touch no transponder will use the internal GPS in the G3X Touch. It is a remote transponder which is normally mounted in a rack behind the panel so it needs to be mounted/cabled before the panel is permanently attached.
  16. I believe the Garmin GTX45R needs a GPS position source as well. Like either a GPS20A or a Garmin IFR Navigator. It cannot use the GPS position from a G3X Touch efis.

  18. 912UL (80hp) are used in very few aircraft these days when for a little more you can get at 912ULS (100hp). The carbed 912ULS is still popular in the US but the injected 912IS (still 100hp but more efficent at cruise) is more popular in Europe. The turbocharged 914 (114hp) is based on the 912UL. The turbocharged 915 (144hp) is based on the 912IS. The turbocharged 916 (165hp) is based on the beefed up 915 but with similar efficent cruise consumption. Most models using a 915 seem to have moved to the 916. Most models with a 914 , 915 or 916 are using a constant speed prop.

  21. 40 years experience on motorcycles, never used an active heater (chest, hands or feet). Keep your core warm - jacket/vest. Needs a layer to break the wind then a layer under that to hold the air. For feet I earlier mentioned waterproof ankle boots. This is cause most runners/ankle boots now are ventilated and a waterproof layer stops the wind. White cotton sports socks are a good layer under the ankle boots. Lots of glove options.

  23. I have both. I prefer gloves with fingers. The trick is to put the gloves on before your hands get cold.
  24. Not heated just regular motorcycle gear. Generally jackets have a wind and waterproof outer layer with a quilted inner (sometimes removable inner). May be a bit bulky. Some sort of ankle boot, waterproof hiking boots may be fine. Motorcycle gloves are available in a variety of thicknesses. A 'neck sock' is good (used like a scarf). I probably would not bother with pants, just jeans. If you have a friend who rides see if they have any old second hand gear and as new m/c gear is not cheap. Second option; Look at a cheap ski jacket. Normally wind/waterproof even the low priced ones.
