  3. Is there a way to split this engine reliability discussion off from the original "Light aircraft crash at Heck Field" discussion ?
  4. Maintenance is also an issue with all engine types. The Piper that crashed on Mona Vale golf course was purchased 6 months earlier for $60k. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to realise you get what you pay for. Penny pinching is not limited to experimentals.
  5. Can I point out life is “inherently risky”. You will never know everything about anything so you take the knowledge you do have, make a risk assessment and then proceed (or divert to another activity). We all have a limited time on this planet. It is your choice whether you live it or analyse yourself to death.
  6. Will Prowse has a good Youtube channel about solar panels, batteries etc - https://www.youtube.com/@WillProwse/videos He does not seem too keen on Sodium-Ion.
  7. This is all correct but not helpful. Are you suggesting that all aircraft entering class C/D airspace should have a ADS-B out transponder ? Sounds like a good idea to me but I can guarantee you will have at least 5000 loud complaints due to the cost. How do you propose to convince your fellow pilots ? Is this adequate ? A better option would be all aircraft to have ADS-B out/in transponders with audio alerts in all areas. Your loud complaints just went up to 20,000 fellow pilots. Actually probably 30,000 when they realise the Skyecho would not be accepted. What is your plan ?
  8. Google maps measuring tool shows a distance of 830 M (from the eastern end of runway 28/10 to the western end creek bank). Hard to know what the accuracy is.
  9. My understanding is he did not get more than 30 feet off the ground. Does anybody have any better information ?
  10. Yeah, nah. AIP says 700M and there is not a lot of room for extensions unless they bought a cane farm.
  11. Heck Field 28/10 is only 700M (2300ft).
  12. One of the forums had Garmin reps on and people asked why the G3X Touch efis was not also a IFR navigator as it has an internal WAAS GPS and fast processor; Did it have the same GPS and firmware as their IFR navigators - yes Was the processor fast enough to handle approach/departures - yes Was the hardware built to the same standards as their IFR navigators - yes Was the hardware subjected to the same testing as their IFR navigators - yes Had Garmin ever produced IFR software that would run on the G3X Touch - crickets What would happen to the price if Garmin submitted the paperwork to the FAA to get it approved for IFR - the price would double Garmin decided that their main market for the G3X Touch was VFR flyers so did not get it approved to keep the cost down. Is this grossly excessive costly approval process part of all certified avionics ?
  13. Nah, thats easy. You need to follow Ryans channel - https://www.youtube.com/@MissionaryBushPilot/videos

  17. My understanding is that Skippys Trig transponder has no GPS source and is therefore transmitting mode S only (not ADS-B out).
  18. It is unheard of for a motorcycle to have a watercooled head and not watercooled cylinder. I understand that the cylinder generates less heat but enclosing any engine in a cowling has always created its own cooling problems. It is an odd thing to do but perhaps it is cost based.
  19. Wish that english guy would stop talking, he does not know 50% of what he thinks he does. How you view Rotax aircraft engines depends on your background. I view the 912ULS as a 40 year old low revving motorcycle engine because my background is motorcycles. Those carbs are CV carbs and commonly used before injection. Not sure why they used water cooled heads with air cooled cylinders rather than watercooled heads AND cylinders. Not latest tech but very reliable.
  20. But when ? I personally have been commenting on lack of advertised courses for over 2 years. Are they really this out of touch with their customer base ?
  21. If you fill out the survey form they do respond. "Good morning Burnie, Thanks for contacting us about the upcoming training. 22. I went off you try to find some Bert Flood info. They have a website but this forwards to FlyRotax that has only very general information. They have a Facebook page which appears to have not been updated since 2019. Eventually found some current posts on Linkedin but again without any detailed information - https://www.linkedin.com/company/bert-flood-imports/posts/?feedView=all Wierd - a business selling a not cheap product that appears to have no interest in selling itself.
  23. Do Floods have a webpage were they put up course dates, contents and cost ?
  24. I think you are mixing up 2 separate issues. The wiring issue is because the Gyprock business owner would be kicked in the nuts by his insurance provider so you end up paying for a second tradesman to come out (travel time included) to perform a small second job. His insurance company does not care and the state government says he is being safe so... ... your problem. The only people who currently know the value of the Foreflight software engineers are the managers of the software teams and they are eiher gone or will be soon. The 'business management team' will find out in 12-18 months when they have to sell the whole business off at 5c on the dollar. Dumb and dumber and it will happen again.
