  1. Garmins mapping is subscription based. Did you get any free updates, perhaps all products but single update only so you could try them ? Looks like a bundle with all Garmins mapping for Aera 660 is US$299 per year - https://fly.garmin.com/fly-garmin/support/pricing You can buy single updates for individual products (bottom of price list) or annual updates for 1 or 2 products but this quickly adds up to more than the annual bundle price. Ignore the Onepaks, these only make sense for multiple panel mounted devices. If you had an iPad you could get all Garmin mapping products (with a Garmin Pilot subscription on up to 3 iPads) for AU$300 per year. So cost wise an iPad my have been a better deal. I believe the Aera is more readable in sunlight tho.
  2. Makes sense to me and not new. A lot of the ‘new requirements’ posted on here seem to be based on a little bit of fact and a lot of misunderstanding. Can people PLEASE verify the facts before posting and not post ‘I heard a rumour does anybody know what’s going on…’
  3. Too many maybes about what RAAus might be doing. If RAAus continue to accept your CASA AFR and reset your RAAus BFR date and then disadvantage pilots who only have a RPC this would probably have an effect on RAAus membership. And if they do not accept CASA AFRs then same pushback from RAAus members and probably some questions from CASA. .... so why ?
  4. Seems unlikely. People would just go RPL and avoid RAAus.
  5. Its experimental. You need to do a lot of research on the materials and design. This experiment failed.
  6. Actually the number of petrol fires is much higher. But they do not make the news.
  7. Maybe they are talking about Frogs Hollow Interntional.
  8. Maybe it hit the fan ?
  9. It is possible for a solar flare to corrupt data in an electronic module leading to unexpected control inputs. Relying on software to detect and correct these errors seems odd when shielding is cheap and generally reliable. Error checking as a backup is a good idea but a well designed module case should mean it is almost never used. Why would a multi thousand dollar electronic unit not already have relatively cheap shielding ?
  10. The meaning of a word is whatever the legislation in your country says it means regardless of common usage. If it is undefined in law then who cares ?
  11. Just to stir the pot; the French call motorcyclists 'pilots'.

  13. It is a problem with the current version of the software in a Thales built box. The fix seems to be reverting to the previous version. If they have not updated to the current version then they do not have a problem.
  14. So not a big job to fix it but a limited number of authorised maintenance staff who can do the job. This could end up taking months to get the whole fleet flying again.
  15. That video of a helo doing a low pass to the right side of the runway and then a Cessna (?) comes in to land and spirals off to the right still freaks me out.

  17. There are two models of GTX45R. If it has an internal GPS it should have 2 antenna sockets on the rear and it needs both a ADS-B antenna and a GPS antenna.
  18. If you have only a single antenna mount (for ADS-B) on the GTX then it sounds like you do not have an internal GPS. You need a GPS source for ABS-B otherwise the GTX45R will only work as a mode S transponder. An IFR navigator (like a GTN650Xi) or a GTX internal GPS or a standalone GPS (like a GPS20A) is needed with the GTX45R for ADS-B. The internal GPS on the G3X Touch cannot be used as an approved GPS source with a ADS-B transponder.
  19. The GA35 is a good antenna and a little more robust than the dash mounts. Maybe you can get away without a G5 antenna. Comments from Vans forum; https://vansairforce.net/threads/garmin-g5-external-gps-antenna-needed.160538/ I'm a little confused on the GTX as the GTX45R is a transponder. Do you have the model with the internal GPS or are you using a GPS20A (seperate GPS receiver). Does this come with an a GPS antenna in the box ? Last time I looked you needed to purchase a GPS antenna and an ADS-B antenna separately (but this was a while ago).
  20. The GA35 is designed for external mounting but dash mount antennas seem to work fine too. I believe you need 3 GPS antennas; G3X Touch G5 and GTX45R.
  21. Not sure how you would couple them without a major redesign. Probably simpler to design a brand new engine.
  22. I'm using this and it is still being updated, at least the aviation metars/tafs and radar pages that I use.
  23. Actually that is not really that expensive. Pretty much every new factory built LSA is in the AU$300 to $350,000 range.
