    I have a few hours in an Evektor Harmony wth a 912IS so no carb heat. Occassionally when the Harmony was u/s we would use an Evektor Sportstar with 912ULS. While I was taught to use carb heat when pulling power the instructor commented that on most 912ULS the carb heat did not make much difference. He is not the only experienced Rotax user that I have heard say this.

    Looks to me like the pipe is too close, more like a 12mm gap. I agree that keeping the heat away from the filter is a very good idea. A heat shield may work but would further reduce the gap. At this stage of the setup angling the pipe outwards makes more sense.

    In a previously edited post I said he should be jailed (if he was not already dead). This is pretty obvious poor decision making.

    Appears that he had the plane for 2? years. Had a RPL but no navigation endorsement and then took it more than 25nm for maintenance. The navigation endorsement covers weather, terrain and route planning for exactly this scenario. This is pretty blatant stupidity and not the first or last time this will occur.

    I am not sure that viewing crash videos when you are inexperienced will or can teach you anything more than planes can kill you. Just the basics of landing require you to learn multiple skills layered one on another and also to develop an understanding of how one skill overdone can have adverse consequences. You do not use these skills in any other area including driving cars. One instructor I know said he actually prefers students who have not learnt to drive as the skills are so different. We quickly get into the area of instructor judgement of students which is not straight forward.

    We know why it happened. Insufficient speed. Taking too long to recognise this. Applying too much elevator without applying enough power. In short lack of understanding of several forces at play and lack of understanding of multiple inputs required to recover. ie inexperience. We could argue about the instructors judgement of the students skillset/decision making but I accept this is very difficult with some low skilled students appearing fine but exhibiting poor decision making when it is all up to them.

    I was always paranoid about final speed to the point I was being repeatedly told 'eyes outside'. I remember being told that as long as the nose is down your risk of stalling is low. At an early point I understood that just pulling the stick gave a small increase in height immediately followed by a significant decrease in speed. I know it is not a joke but if you did not laugh you would cry. And this will happen again.

    Yep, for some reason the elevators do not work too well with insufficent speed.

    Can we stop slagging off each other and RAAus (not a question, please do not answer). I went in 2024. It was a small show, the sort of show you would expect a small regional aero club to run. The underwing camping area was limited but seemed to have ok facilities. There were limited vendors. Had a good chat with Sling, Bert Flood and Garmin but was out of things to do after 90 minutes. There was very limited food. Not sure whether the small crowd would have supported more food vendors. Being able to walk around visiting aircraft would have been good and tripled the size of the show. I drove 5 hours from Sydney. This was a max 2 hour drive show. I am surprised they selected the same venue again and probably will not be going in 2026.

    It would be easy to get away with no maintenance release and no AFR and even no license and this case proves it. CASA does SFA checks. First arse to be kicked should be CASAs but we know that will not happen.

    A few anomalies; - why is he charged with not surrendering his pilots license when they state he did not have one ? - if he believed he could sign off his annuals/100hr (and he did this at least twice) why did he not continue doing this annually ? This would have supported any future legal arguments. Not a smart guy.

    What chemical component does it use ? In the video I see at least 2 examples of supposedly electrical fires that look more to me like flammible liquids.

    If you do not have an approved GPS source for a mode S/ADS-B transponder then it is not transmitting ADS-B just mode S. So running a Skyecho out/in should be fine.

    I have watched a lot of her videos and she is technically very good. Her narration is a little theatrical but not at the expensive of her piloting. My only criticism is her knowledge is a little limited on the mechanical side but she would not be the only Cirrus pilot you could make this comment about.

    What is their TBO and show me 10 planes that have reached TBO without major work ? Also, show me a battery with min 3-4 hours (6+ would be better). And decent useable weight with comparable price to ICE equipped. It may be the future but right now I do not want to pay more for less.

The huge political problem called Western Sydney made sure of that. CASA CTA access press release - https://www.casa.gov.au/about-us/news-media-releases-and-speeches/access-controlled-airspace-and-controlled-aerodromes-sport-and-recreation-pilots "Under the proposal, pilots would need to meet established CASA requirements for: English language proficiency competency in using a radio to communicate with air traffic control pilot competencies, including in navigation, flight planning, emergency, weather and airspace clearances minimum medical requirements." So looks like you may need radio, AELP and cross country nav as precursors to the CTA endorsement. Wording of the medical requirement is a slight backdown from the original version of this statement that had Med 5. The real question is when and neither CASA nor RAAus currently seem prepared to make a statement.
