  1. I always liked the Enya, (Also Japanese) for it's better external appearance but the OS 29 Performed very well, A few of my mates Purchased the FOX 35 which is a great Combat Motor but with a tendency to lose compression after a while. We did high times on our combat Motors. They weren't static exhibits. There's a HINESS 09 glow motor here too and an ED Superfury. and a new albon Merlin, and a Taipan 1.5 (missing a spraybar). AND another Big Glo thing I made Myself. Nev
  2. Why not use the Original engine? An A models Ford swinging a BIG Prop. The engine is Lightened by chiselling metal from the Block. Nev
  3. Those engines won't go to TBO without a TOP. Everyone knew that when those Planes were New. Looked after they are One of the Most reliable engines Made. Nev
  4. I can't see how ANY of that is "Lecturing "YOU at all. Are "SCATHING" replies a good thing. ? Where is discussion Going? Nev
  5. You didn't JUST say you would not Purchase one, YOU bagged it Completely and then CRY "POOR ME" when People counter your comments and provide fulsome reasons. The Bloke who made that Plane is in the same game as we ALL are. FFS. "Having Heard no Logical/factual comment to the contrary"? IT WAS THERE. but YOU ignore it. AS always, Unfortunately. Nev
  6. It's BEST to design an engine from ground up for a Particular use than Adapt something designed for some other purpose. Power to weight is Important in aircraft. Having multiple identical cylinders reduces costs. AIR cooling can be used and is simpler. Some motors can be direct drive and that saves costs and is safer.. Aero engines are not used till they are worn out . They have to perform to the book always. and that is checked by required inspections.. Race Car engines are stripped regularly. They do very small Hours Between tear downs. Both types of motors are critical in their Own way, and neither have Long useful Lives. Engines in cars get a relatively easy life The best aero engines have No Head gasket and the Quality is in the Metallurgy and Materials. Nitrided Cylinders Crankshafts. High revs means Lots of LOAD reversals .It's NOT just Piston speed to consider and good aero engines have dynamic torsion vibration dampers. and will always be built in relatively LOW numbers with Many Variants of a type. Also, A car engine from the wreckers is hardly a good Place to start and Many Car engines only run for a year or two, before being discontinued and few are designed for reconditioning whereas Aero engine shops will always be around. Horses for COURSES. Later Lycomings may Look Like Prewar ones, but they are Better. The trouble with a lot of Aero engines is they SIT too much and don't get warmed Up properly. . IT takes at Least 45 mins in the air to warm the Engine thoroughly. Nev
  7. ALL the Little Motors I used were Diesels. I never had any Cox's. Anything over 1.5 cc was Glow Plug Usually 5 cc FROG 500. K&B.29 OS 29. ETA 19. McCOY 19.Testor corp( Piece of crap). I've probably forgotten a few; The OS 29 I still have with a lot of use It's STILL Good. Nev
  8. One thing above all it TRUE. Mostly YOU MAKE your own Luck. particularly with Aeroplanes , Check everything you can reasonably do and don't go where you will require a Lot of LUCK or MORE skill than you have to get OUT of it.. Be someone People could trust THEIR KIDS with.. Nev
  9. The smaller ROTAX'S WERE'NT water cooled. Some had single carburettors and you CAN have VARYING Mixtures in each cylinder. A leaking crankcase seal will LEAN the Mixture and Melt a hole in a Piston real fast. Most flying people don't really LIKE 2 stroke Power and the BEST operators watch their engines Like HAWKS. Power to weight they are still GOOD. Nev
  10. I've been looking up a lot of the MODEL engines that were made. VERY INTERESTING. recommended. I still have a Bit of what I Had but collectors persuaded me to Part with quite a Few. You need to Look after them carefully. Not good tor Run Old ones as the metal can age Harden. I know a few KEEN collectors.. One sometimes comes to the Men's shed. His FATHER built Beaufort's at GAF. Drove a car till he was 100. His Father and I used to Have LONG discussions about aircraft design and Build quality. Nev
  11. Outboards are watercooled and Motorbikes don't run Flat out for extended times Like Aircraft 2 strokes do and IF either stops it's not the BIG deal it is on an aeroplane. Nev
  12. EGTs are VERY Important on Turbines also, or it's drip drip drip out the Back on start or a flung turbine wheel at other times. On 2 strokes IF you Know the Mixture stays where it should be you COULD dispense with it?? Nev
  13. EGT's are Important on a 2 stroke. Vibration Probably Makes these things brittle. I reckon you will need the whole lot. Nev
  14. You are Just digging a deeper hole for yourself. Nev
  15. Anti scuffing additives in the Oil can short out plugs also. Get an old style Hairpin and carefully grind a chisel Point on the longest arm and use that to scratch the deposit from all of the electrode surface. Use anti seize on the Plug threads. Nev
  16. A solid bit of structure at the front, usually. of the canopy, capable of taking the weight of the Aircraft. Nev
  17. There's some Hairy efforts there. The ONE with the AIrbus A 300. The throttles didn't respond due to wrong manipulation of the Auto's With An Aeroformation Pilot in France. Nev
  18. In such circumstances, FIRE is almost Guaranteed. Unfortunately. Safety Pylons were used in some Planes to Make egress easier and Maybe a fire extinguisher and race car style Fuel Tanks. ALL cost and weight. Nev
  19. The thread topic IS VERY SPECIFIC in this instance. and is on going and involves Fatalities. Nev
  20. Well I would. You are welcome. It wouldn't do for Me what it might for you and I always was a risk averse person and Know what can go wrong in older engines where there isn't the Hands on experience there was in their Heyday or the New Bits. Merlins have a few Quirky faults in any case even when New. The thrill and value is not in it for Me Nor would I want my wife and kids to do it either. There are Very few Countries where merlin's were permitted in Civil USE. Nev
  21. This FORUM Goes World wide and I'm much ashamed of the Unfounded Criticism (by YOU) of a Good Real Life Flying Machine being tested in the Marketplace. THAT takes GUTS. Your comments Skip, are really OFF. and reflect badly on the Quality of discussion this site. . It 'so easy to criticise. How would YOU like it if you had put a Plane on the Market backed with your Money and copped a drubbing like you have Handed out.? Nev
  22. Desperation over ruling sound Judgement. The Casualty is TRUST. AND most People do not WANT this.. dare I say, "Obsessive" Behaviour. . Nev
  23. Bl**dy Hell You are getting worse by the Minute. SKIP. Nev
  24. You are bringing Gliders into the equation Todays gliders are extremely aerodynamic AND expensive. . Nev
  25. Anyhow you can't beat the reliability of Jet Motors but they Have NO Personality at all and are relatively Much more easy to manage. In a single engined Plane I'm always very Conscious of what I'm Flying OVER. MODERN twin Engined Jets HAVE plenty of Power on ONE. and they will GLIDE 100NM from FL 310.. Nev
