  1. Dearer than a good button and More awkward to Operate. Nev
  2. I was going to mention that but I was not game to. We used to call it '"thread dredge" Nev
  3. Key switches are expensive.. Nev
  4. You wouldn't want to come across a Tiger snake then. They will cross a creek to get at you.. Nev
  5. There's often a limit on starter cranking time but the solenoid should not get hot unless something is wrong with it... Nev
  6. We don't really know what happened, but with Jabiru's, keeping weight OFF the nosewheel is very important. Nev
  7. I ALWAYS look at ANY plane flying over, especially if it's radial engined. . Nev
  8. It's only a relatively small current in the solenoid actuator circuit. The Large AMPS only go through the Heavy contact Points. It's only a RELAY, but a large one.. Some (Better) set ups have the solenoid engage the drive before the power is applied to crank the engine. This is less damaging to the engagement mechanism. Some engines have a Pull cable to avoid having the solenoid at all. Saves weight and more reliable. Starter Motors are Heavy and require substantial Battery Capacity and Heavy wiring and a good earth path. Geared starter Motors can be a Lot Lighter because the Motor is smaller. Nev.
  9. It's getting too dangerous on an old bike. Tin tops don't care, and rallies are too costly for Me now. I'm still doing work on them. I'd rather ride with a few (compatible) Mates Where they and I want to go, and no bunch ups on corners, with People who can't Make up their Minds. Cheers Nev
  10. Can't see any Mention of the PMI exam. . (Principles and Methods of Instruction.) It was mandated to RUN a Flying School (FTF). Lot's there. How'r you going Ian? Nev
  11. My Uncle Next door to where I grew up Had 2 in the shed where the Chook feed was Kept as the Mice would go for the Bran and Pollard that was stored there . They get pretty TAME and not too bothered by People they are used to going in there. That one looks a little thin. Nev
  12. That's only a Carpet snake and will Keep the Mice down. Get a second opinion. Nev
  13. Oh father I have sinned, and gave in to temptation The opportunity was too hard to resist. .... Nev
  14. This was the FIRST 2 seater SB around I was told. A 503 would not have lifted the two of us, I would have thought.. We were not lightweights. I could be wrong. It WAS a Pull start. You could NOT reduce the Power much when you levelled off. I did not have much Notice of the flight. When it was offered I thought well I'll Probably have to do it sometime and he was an F/O I'd done a lot of flying with. and trusted. I flew it all the time. I wasn't a passenger. Must have taken six Minutes. The Plane was very New. That helps. Nev
  15. Why NOT Include T/W IF you don't have it?. It should also count as a flight review. ANY endorsement can count as a flight review,. Nev
  16. My first ultralight flight was at Mangalore Air show in 1986 so there was a lot of onlookers and we were Height restricted. It was a 582 SB Thruster with Pull start. A bit different to the B 727 I flew the day before. Some instructors fly say 8 different Planes in a day. A plane is a PLANE they say. Fly the one you are NOW IN. Not the One you got out of. Nev
  17. He may want that before he lets you loose with one of HIS planes BUT everything from your PPL that's relevant will go straight to your RAAus Certificate. Tailwheel, Navs C/S prop Retractable U/C etc. Nev
  18. In Commercial Airlines 35-50% of crashes are crew error related often just a Judgement. Got too slow etc. Airline crews do a lot of Full Motion simulator work getting the Abnormals and Emergency actions just right .. That's why flying is the safest way to go. Nev
  19. Modern jet engines can be started and just go to full throttle. From the CVR and the Voices I am of the view that the Captain Prevented the FO from moving the switches for long enough to make it too late to save the Aircraft. Maybe he got passed over for a Promotion?? The Airline had just changed Hands. Nev
  20. 5 hours min. That includes Passenger safety briefing and low inertia and tailwheel (usually). Do it thoroughly and enjoy it. Nev
  21. It Looks to have Incorporated features of Henri Mignet's Flying Flea. Nev
  22. I have the Tiny Electric soldering apparatus but I don't reckon Many would, You need resin cored solder and Paste (non corrosive) flux also. Nev
  23. Time is Money for Most People and maybe you could spend time More Productively that resoldering Mother boards, etc. Ducati's these days are very digitalised. They would have to be on top of these things or the wouldn't sell their bikes. Nev
  24. You never do a ground retract test Unless the Plane is on Jacks. Pins are inserted first thing after the Plane is Parked. After push back the Ground engineer walking with the Plane shows the captain the U/C Pins before he Unplugs his coms. Everything on these is electric . They were reported as Checking if something like a heavy landing may have happened. so I really don't know . It Might be a Maintenance issue. It was a Pretty Hard KLUNK by the Look of how the Airframe reacted to the Impact. Nev
  25. There's People everywhere with Mental health Problems, including Pilots. Same with alcoholism. In Places Like PNG it was chronic. Planes up there were flown OVERWEIGHT. The "P" charts were "PK" charts because PNG was considered "DEVELOPMENTAL by the equivalent of CASA. DCA I think. There's NO way those Planes would fly on one engine even at sea Level ley alone at the Height they had to fly in New Guinea. Maybe why that's why they drank so Much. They even took the Insulation out of the DC-3's to save weight so there Goes your Hearing as well.. Nev
