  1. Few People Know How to these days. People in TAFE's etc would not have any Hands on experience to teach it. Engine reconditioning has all But disappeared. Near everything is CNC'd People also don't have a great understanding of Metallurgy, Stress relieving heat treatment etc "Jobbing Machinist" would only Make "Coffee Money" as no one want's to pay for the Time skill and effort Required. Nev
  2. The situation with RAAus structure is only a small Part of it. As an alternative to VH it is failing. Remember it was CASA's idea. They wanted to Be rid of it. Perhaps because they thought it wasn't a serious form of Aviation and only a Chore. There would be little KUDOS for the CASA staff involved with it.. They would see it as a punishment. A stagnant Backwater from the exciting Maiinstream RPT stuff. RAAus darted into the FRAY Breathlessly claiming to be THE "NEW GA". That achieved "Not Much" except ALIENATING the rest. At the early 90's I thought we were amongst the World Leaders. Sadly, I believe we have gone BACKWARDS since then. (and I wouldn't be the ONLY one). Nev
  3. How many People here Have flown IFR, Properly Rated? . CASA have had the view Teach it and People will do IT. Well People think it's easy and find out the Hard way that it isn't.. You need recency and Have Instruments that You TRUST explicitly.. Nev
  4. ALL Piston engines are CRAP. They have had their day. Very funny danny. I now consider My involvement much as a waste of time but I DID DO It. I was NUTS about engines. I still work on them . Nev
  5. Correct/ Effective Instrument scanning is Part of Instrument Flying training, already, but you FLY on ATTITUDE . There's a standard IF Panel Layout. HUD is probably the Best presentation. If you fixate on a performance instrument you will Overshoot continuously. Example. Don't chase airspeed. Nev
  6. Yes I have had a bit to do with engine development and racing and Knew a Lot of Car Distributers at one time. I still have connections with People who specialise in that Kind of thing. They are under no Illusions about some of the deficiencies in them. Nev
  7. Good story. Based on One car.? New design Reliable?? Unlikely straight away unless based on something already pretty good. How Many Makers have been successful with F1 Engines and how much $$$$ spent. Second hand Values give a better idea, Most of these HONKY cars have faults and are costly/hard to service. Ferrari's are worth quite a lot generally. Hanging a structure off the side of a Block doesn't seem a Neat way to do it and it's all going through a lot of gears to get to the axles. Mechanical Noise and energy Loss and loss of dimensions with temp Changes.. Not good when just behind your seat back.. Most of them are Just Horrible to drive in Traffic anyhow. Nev
  8. Yeah. My advice is to stop flyjng as the scene stinks. An instructor could easily lose everything as things Lie. I'm mainly Here for the safety aspects of things in case you haven't noticed. I have no need to Prove anything but the good days are over in My estimation. Despite what you Keep on saying CASA is finally RESPONSIBLE for ALL that goes on in the Air. The last "A" stands for Authority and you can't contract OUT of a responsibility YOU Have under a Regulation without ensuring the Chosen Body can fulfill ALL foreseeable situations/ Liabilities. People are MUGS to work for RAAus, Nev
  9. Stop the Motor when running as slow as Possible. 1 Switch OFF wait, then Cut the second. Nev
  10. The Motor has essentially NO Flywheel whatever and won't be Happy at Low revs particularly cold. The carbs are NOT Phased evenly. Nev
  11. You are good at dodging serious issues Put to You. Waste of My time (as Usual) Nev
  12. This is UP there with them. People like to be associated with Winners. The cars back then bore a connection with their cars where as the Current V8 super cars do Not. The Pilot going there37,000 ft is exposed to a very real risk of Death. Is THAT Motor standard? I'd think not. Listened to a Bloke who'd flown an RV to the South Pole and the problems he had with Oil freezing at similar OAT's but the air Pressure was a normal Figure. Nev.
  13. IF I check out someone for aeros some time in the past am I responsible IF HE does something silly and Kills Himself. IF so the System is doomed. No sensible person would be part of it. People are responsible for what THEY DECIDE to do. Not try to Get compensation from some other Party For A DECISION that No Normal thinking person would have MADE. You can't educate people to Be risk averse IF they Aren't.. And it's NOTHING Like RACE cars where People enter events at specified Places. . Crooks don't tell where they are going to rob someone either. Pilots who stuff up are not around to repeat it, frequently. IF they take someone with them, it's much worse. Nev
  14. You are a stuck record Turbs and you are NOT listening. Nev
  15. Believe ME to do it right is a very precise Thing. The Nose attitude must achieve a very stable speed which us well controlled and the ASI will read wrong depending where the Pitot is and which way you are turning/slipping. Power is at idle so that can't be used . It's just relying on Nose attitude done smoothly and positively. This must be mastered at a safe height. It only suits certain (Mainly Unflapped ) Planes. It's unpleasant for Passengers. Not compulsory IF you are not comfortable with it. Nev
  16. Wouldn't happen in a barrel roll or Loop. THAT is SO WRONG rgmwa. Nev
  17. That is irrelevant. I think a few on this site commented at the time, probably including ME. Please state How it could have been stopped effectively by anyone. Nev
  18. You need lots more information on this Matter to be experimenting, The WRIGHT flyer was capable of SLIPPING sideways and coming to grief as it had no KEEL surface to speak of. It's NOT just DRAG.. At the recovery you have a considerable ROD. THAT must be accounted for to Flare and that often causes a Ballooning and excess float, when the drag is normal loosing the purpose of the sideslip to an extent and de-stabilising your Landing.. You should NOT learn/do this other than with a good Instructor. Nev
  19. IT would NOT have made any difference. He inferred he was good enough. I've been involved with People like that But not as Bad. IF it wasn't THAT day it would be another. Nev
  20. An autopilot doesn't know when it's in cloud. You still have to know where the HILLS are and get out of the Cloud safely. You can also run out of daylight, OR fuel, mucking around.. Nev
  21. Good advice. Eucalyptus trees are Like Drums of Petrol. Radiant Heat is Enormouse. Nev
  22. That's why Magnetic drain Plugs etc are Good. They won't pick up brass cages though. Nev
  23. Haven't you got a RATE turn Needle? . People will continue to get into cloud and they won't be "In Control" Long. You are correct there. Nev
  24. Just a stunt to make people buy a high Priced option. Has NO bearing on Normal USE. Rotax would not consider it a normal Operational Envelope. What pressure was the coolant system at and how was the Oil Prevented from freezing as well as the PILOT. Any Motor Boosted sufficiently would maintain Power. The OAT would be Minus 56 c and the pressure 2.7 Psi. Nev
  25. Racing cars don't FLY and you can call of an event if the weather is bad.. NO comparison at all. When a little Plane takes off from somewhere non controlled there's no way to stop them or KNOW where they are going. Nev
