You couldn't make this up - the EU is now officially more socialist than the Chicoms.
China ready to impound EU planes in CO2 dispute
"China will take swift counter-measures that could include impounding European aircraft if the EU punishes Chinese airlines for not complying with its scheme to curb carbon emissions, the China Air Transport Association said on Tuesday."

Thanks for that info rgmwa, I just ordered the Rec Flying headset (can't beat the value for money there) and may consider adding the ANR feature in the future. Maybe Rec Flying will have an ANR version of this headset for sale by then...
-
Yes this is important ignoring any EFATO implications. Seems most just teach power on steep banked 360 turns, not sure if this is terribly relevant in real life but it does cover the RaAus Ops manual steep turns requirement. The key here is: How many schools actively teach power off steep turns? -
Can you really get a pair for that sort of money? Edit - OK a set, I see... not two of them!At around $1K for a pair of A20's I reckon I would be better off spending that on flying time..I'm looking too & get the feeling these high end ANR headsets should be quite a bit cheaper than they are - and probably will be within a couple of years.

Haha... embarrassing enough to be in an airforce with no defensive aircraft.

That it is not something to do below 500 feet AGL.All done at 500ft ... nothing below ... what dos that say loud and clear ...-

Found the video I was looking for which demonstrates clearly the height lost in gliding turns at different bank angles 15deg - 60deg, for that aircraft. It is on the SoCal Aerobatic Club website, can't embed here. Note their demonstrations were all with additional height added for safety unlike the videos above.
Update: Also good info from AOPA here.

Fantastic... I remember as a child being enthralled by the stories of an old WW1 vet friend, hiding in the forest from the German Fokkers and fighting in the dreadful Somme trenches. These folk are known in the USA as 'the greatest generation'. Not sure how many flying stories there are from that era (besides fictional Biggles stuff of course).

Yeah rather dodgy with the stall warning going like that, personally I would be much more aggressive with getting the nose down. I want to make it clear to anyone reading my earlier comments if you haven't practised this manoeuvre definitely don't try it in a real EFATO situation, far too risky then.
-
Wayne you would agree that there must be some height where a 180 deg or 270 deg gliding turn is going to be safely doable? Also I believe for single engine turbine aircraft CASA have a CAO which requires an EF turnback manuever be taught, so I suggest impossible is not the right word. In most cases not advisable, certainly but this would depend on the height, conditions and alternatives right?
-
This is the correct way to practise emergency manoeuvres. I believe such techniques are important and potentially very useful when there is enough height and ahead isn't a survivable option, but clearly not for beginners & should be with instructor initially. There is technical info available from folks who have studied and practised this, 45 deg bank seems to result in the least height lost. Goes without saying I put nose sharp down first & be prepared for spin recovery (practising at height obviously). I'll see if I can find the link if it doesn't blow too many fuses.I think I might take my plane to a few thousand feet, take up a heading, set climb attitude then pull the power and see just how much height I lose trying to 'turn back'. -
My thoughts when I read this too. Whilst I agree with Kevin's overall point it is dependant on factors such as height of course. I was shown a steep teardrop manoeuvre for this situation during training, this helps to see how much height is lost & therefore at what height this can safely be done in that particular aircraft allowing for a margin of course. This could be a lifesaver also with an EFATO in rough country but sounds like Kevin probably wouldn't be keen on teaching this.Whilst I agree with the basic theory of 'not to turn back', doesn't it depend on the type of aircraft and the height achieved prior to engine failure. -
Go for it dazza, they are pretty cheap and are supposed to go together easy. Just need to find a reasonable priced engine.

Wonderful, thanks for posting f_t. Tomo needs some of those machine guns on his Solitaire....

BTW those guys must be pretty sad about the lack of small radial engines now.

Very sad indeed, my sympathies to David's family and friends.
Makes me reflect life is short, very short, also reminded me of what King David wrote, like a flower it is so brief:
Psalm 103 "Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more."

Can fly higher too right?
Doubt I'm gonna see the curve of the earth from a Jabba but it'd be fun trying.

Couldn't figure out why he wasn't upset about the 95.10 crowd not turning up, seems to blame RA-Aus for not begging them enough or something? There may well be some background I am not aware of but I found the letter to be confusing.BTW anyone read Nev White's letter in the current issue of Sport Pilot? Bet that's the last Natfly he attends. -
Well put Kevin. I suggest their wages & staff numbers be linked to the private aviation sector in order to provide an incentive to help & not to crush the aviation business.
-
So the way I read the editorial is that RA-Aus currently has no public liability insurance and it still trying to negotiate a good quote.
Personally this doesn't bother me a lot as I think it is low fairly risk and they are big enough to self-insure and save the $ each year (our $) but it seems this issue may have freaked out some board members?
-
Was thinking that nose looks like it needs something then it came to me - the fuse is missing!
Don't try any kamikaze stuff Tomo....

I'm not sure why they even exist.
You surely jest? In the way that we couldn't fly without ASIC cards or park a car without parking meters yes?If they weren't around I wouldn't be able to fly at all. -
Sounds just like us here in Australia where we are so terrified of possible 'global warming' we have brought in thousands of new government regulations and a tax in a desperate bid to control the worlds temperature. It is a nation whose economy runs on the basis of distrust and fear. As a nation they are ALWAYS afraid of someone, and fully defended in preparation. -
Just tell them you landed here during filming a new tourism advert.....

I wouldn't stress about it Kaz. What's the worst that could happen? Some poor sucker end up incarcerated who otherwise wouldn't have been, no big deal..... I have so many things running through my mind at once, I too have embarassing memory lapses.
Besides it's not like you'd remember to even feel bad about it!

Chinese airlines fight eu socialism

Nev I think you might need to re-read the article. In this case the ones threatening to fine and seize aircraft is the EU, the other guys are just calling their bluff. Anyway it is a moot point as the EU won't exist in any serious capacity after the Euro folds, they have much more serious issues on hand than a CO2 tax on airways and I'm pretty sure China would have figured that out.
