I understand that but I can't see how joiners would collapse.

You Pull a pretty high vacuum with the throttle closed if the engine is in good Nick. Bigger dia Hoses are More susceptible, but it wouldn't be the end of the world in any case . You have to allow for a slight change of length. Nev
