  1. You are going BACK a long way Methusala.. It is said you lived 900 years. Modern stuff is certified to fly on ONE. Nev
  2. Best to get out of the Plane and a fair distance from it, IF there's any chance of it going UP. Long dry grass doesn't help. I guess it was a HOT day also.. Planes can be replaced. Nev
  3. The exhaust system is a common ignition source unless the engine has failed and cooled. OIL Ignites even better than Fuel on a Hot exhaust.. Bigger stuff has fire extinguishing for the engines. Shutting OFF fuel and electric Master is advised if the Landing goes Pear-shaped. You MAy want to use the radio. Nev
  4. 40 Flap has been Locked out I believe on some Cessna's for years. Also seat track locking failing has caused some bad incidents The HIGH control force required to Lower the NOSE is the Major Problem making Precise Pitch angle more difficult to maintain. A rehearsed Practice is never the same. No one would risk deliberately Bouncing a Plane to practice it, On ANY Landing One should be alert to "something " happening which would need a quick and Positive response. IF not stable and happy GO AROUND. Don't wait for it to become critical. Nev
  5. You are very good at emotional Blackmail, and selective quotations often devoid of context. Attempts at a good discussion with you are FUTILE. You INSULT those who disagree with your view of things. Name calling rather than analysis. Nev
  6. The AN 2 Motor is OK if you Look after it. Only having ONE makes it more Important Nev
  7. COMPLY with the rules . Mostly they are written in blood. Wisdom comes with experience but learning from the experiences of others is less risky and better than finding out the HARD way. It's NOT WIMPY to be a SAFE pilot. It just MAKES GOOD SENSE, for you and the Movement.. Nev
  8. Thanks for Posting that sfGnome . On MY first SOLO in a Chipmunk I bounced as the Plane was much more nose heavy than I was Used to and I didn't pull back enough to arrest the sink and it was an extremely critical Moment as I do/did 3 pointers so was deficient on speed initially. I doubt THAT Cessna Pilot had done anything like what would be necessary to ABSOLUTELY Nail the recovery. IMHO the stall recovery taught is TOTALLY Inadequate as it's ONLY Power OFF . DID he apply enough rudder for "P" factor and torque effect. Probably NOT as he wouldn't Know ABOUT IT. Most TRI gear Cessna Highwing pilots just the Pedals to rest their feet on. He's not a Large Person so the Plane should have Had plenty of power The Fowler flaps are close to the Best in the business in the Lift/ drag stakes but cause a strong pitch up effect with full Power application.. Perhaps the seat was a bit too far back. WE don't KNOW. Just "heaping it on the Pilot" solves NOTHING. Nev
  9. There used to be a saying: There are Old Pilots and Bold pilots but not many OLD, BOLD pilots. Also, EVEN if you do manage to get there, what example are you setting? Only GAMBLE when you can afford to lose. PPPP. Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Peformance.. Weather and Terrain and fuel, deserve your utmost attention no matter what you fly. SOME people are Unfit to be in charge of an aircraft. They identify themselves to the Observant, easily and usually come unstuck in a big way before long because nothing they are told SINKS IN. Nev
  10. Even experienced people can get caught by Icing . Worst time of the year to be going over that particular Terrain.
  11. I've found aviation Insurers that I've had anything to do with exceptionally good in that respect. It's a small fraternity and word gets around pretty quickly of shonky Operators. It just involves the owner and would depend on the coverage HE /she had chosen. Not a Lot of damage other than the Aircraft itself. + the small grass fire.. Give the Airport fire fighters a bit of Practice. Nev
  12. It wasn't done deliberately. I don't see why. That's why Planes are Insured. It's a critical Manoeuvre. Nothing like an ordinary touch and go that's done so often to save time. Nothing like any stall that would have been likely to have been Practiced either. Perhaps the Motor wasn't delivering full Power? Maybe More Variable a wind than expected? Nev
  13. Totally different to Tangential thinking which would be an impediment to Proper Process. . Fleming's observation was more luck than anything else, on that occasion. The Scientific Method builds on established knowledge and able to be re produced results, starting with an Hypothesis and proceeding through several stages to eventually a Law if it passes the necessary scrutiny and review by Peers. . Nev.
  14. I think they were Known as Microlites. Nev
  15. There's a memorial there commemorating it, which I have seen. Hokitika was a big whaling port on the West Coast of the South island famous for it's "Wild Food Festival". Nev
  16. Looking at the video, there was a bit of wind there at the time. What was the temperature? Nev
  17. Yes he had a heavy landing and fire at Echuca (I think it was). Nev
  18. Machlne some off, including the entire top and make an Aluminium cover and with new top to fit using the rubber washer and glue with 2 Pack epoxy. The least effort I can come up with. Use a number of bent over tabs(6?) if you want assurance it won't come off. Nev
  19. Pick your season then for smooth air. I knew Paul Bruty. A very accomplished Gyro Operator. Modern Gyros have rotor spin up before the take off run . They use a lot of fuel. Nev
  20. A precursor to the Dutch Fokker Friendship was the" Handley Page Herald" which replaced 4 Alvis Leonides Radials with 2 RR Darts in the Mid 50's. Some Fokkers were Made under Licence in the USA by Fairchild BUT they were NOT built with REDUX Bonding and they shed wings at about the time I went on F27's here. We flew them at reduced Airspeeds Just in case so I wasn't that Impressed. The Dutch ones didn't have the Problem and the Mk2 with bigger RR Dart engines and Longer range was a quite successful Plane in Australia They had Auto feather and Quick retracting Wheels to improve the T/O Climb performance. Brakes, and gear were Operated By High Pressure Air at 3600 psi.. The early versions only had Castoring nosewheels and that would be pretty Unsatisfactory with differential Air Brakes.. TAA operated a Flight to Timor L'Este, Baucau under a Qantas Flight# (QF 1308) Out of Darwin. Going through the Intertropic Convergence Zone in summer was INTERESTING An Ice green wall with tops at 60.000 feet. WE had radar. There and back the same day. Nev
  21. There was a HS 748 that looked a bit like the Accountant The RAAF had a few..
  22. Maybe it's an MZ engine. 2 of them are used in a Cri Cri (cricket). Nev
