  1. Depends on whether they are BIG enough. EVERY Motorcycle I've fitted a filter to has to Be retuned and I fit Bigger ones than those. This is well Known. It doesn't take MUCH TO alter THE MIXTURE. Nev
  2. Some filters may alter the Mixture if they are not Large enough or get clogged up, That's important with an aircraft. Nev
  3. Vent Lateral is Another. You'd get many variable winds at such Places. The steep slope on the Landing to Me is the Most Notable aspect of the challenge. Nev
  4. I am what I am. Who do you think YOU are? You DONT "KNOW" PEOPLE on the NET. You make a Guess based on your Own Prejudices YOU have Made a Judgement on Me, Of the cuff. I feel I'm required to constantly defend Myself and I DON'T like it one bit. .It's Clear a few of you don't Like Me. I can accept that If I have to. Some things Might be funny But after a while Having a GO at serious and safety related stuff $#1t$ me off Big time. A lot of stuff I've Posted Here has Never Been raised Before and Its REAL. IF you don't Like it Just Pass it BY. A lot of the things you Interpret as an attack is Not intended but I don't Mince words. BrendDAn I stand By everything I said about that Gyro.Nev
  5. There's ONE Bristol Wrecked at the Bottom of a Hill. They Just removed the Engines and Left the rest there. In the Mid 60s I crewed DC4s to POM-LAE overnight LAE. Frequently we were about 500 Ft above the terrain over the OWEN Stanleys at about Flt LVL 150. If it wasn't VFR the LSALT was FL 170 coming back. The High speed selection for the Blowers was removed On OUR C47/DC4 Planes Guaranteeing we Couldn't Maintain Height If any engine failed. ALL approved BY CASA or DCA at the Time. ALSO the PNG Fleet operated on PK Charts for MAX Weights. ((Developmental) allowing them to be Overloaded compared to Mainland figures. How good is that? Nev
  6. That would Make a Mess of the Floor. I wonder how they spread the Load? The slope also made the cargo likely to fall to the rear when Loading the 3.. A few dark Toes were cut off to the Merriment of the Other workers, Strange sense Of Humour. we called those white Man Hats "Bring Em Back Alive Oh's." You could Buy them just after the War. Nev
  7. Personal again. Not Classy. IF my input is incorrect question it. Not make jokes about it in the serious thread. IF I help just a few People My effort is Justified. My jokes are meant to be funny. Not at someone else's Expense. We are HERE to exchange views and I'm not going to Be Bullied By the likes of you. Nev
  8. What BS. you guys. Easy to get a sandstorm in some parts of Australia . It's getting so it's impossible to have a good discussion Here. Well done .Just a waste of time.. other people visit THIS site it's becoming a Joke. That's the SILLIEST thing you've said so far Mb. IF you want to be silly try the Off Topic section and Leave this one for the non Idiots You are certainly doing your Best to just make My serious input a JOKE. Do you think that is FAIR? Nev
  9. The degree Of damage a Backfire can cause is dependant on the Amount of charge that Gets Ignited. with a supercharger that can Include IT'S volume, What's in a very Large Carburettor and the Manifold and a cylinder or two. I'm convinced that these backfires on start, resulted in a lot of Failed Cylinders at the shrink Band on Big radials as well as other engine issues.. The forces are enormous. LPG gas Backfires on cars can shorten a con rod or Split A VEE Block. Fords dedicated gas six RUNS much heavier rods THAN STANDARD. Nev
  10. No Joke is NO Joke. If you feel like a fool there's Plenty around. To err is Human. To forgive, Divine. er, or something like that. IF you haven't MADE a Mistake , chances are you HAVEN'T Made ANYTHING.. Nev
  11. I MISSED the Crosswind aspect of it. I have Many Mates who flew into ONE WAY strips In PNG in Bristol Freighters. (often Called "Frighteners) which Came from Pakistan after WW2. to TAA. IF they parked sideways near the top of the Hill, the BIG front doors would Jamb when the fuselage distorted. Bristol sleeve Valve Engines same as SEA Furies Had..Nev
  12. Landing up a considerable slope May require FULL Power and enough extra speed to Perform an Abrupt flare. Nev
  13. The suitability is in the design. Depends on what Purpose it's designed for. Not Necessarily the Brand Name. Nev
  14. It's Probably an ACME thread form. You could roll an aluminium (thin section) on a former of Mild steel. I reckon you'd find something used in Industrial Chemicals. There is Probably a standard. Nylon is fine. Bugger to machine. Nev
  15. How can you guarantee that? Quite good Air cleaners are Made for Aircraft but Many use Practically Nothing. Sand Storms will stuff Most aero engines. Depends where you Operate. Nev
  16. They only keep out Grasshoppers, washers and spanners. You can see through them. Flame traps would be Metallic. Nev
  17. I'm NOT Interested in a pissing competition with you, Moneybox. I believe PREVENTION is Better than Calamity. Long fast hot trips can dislodge sludge and cause filter By Pass. I don't believe in the Casual approach particularly with Aircraft. It's Not some thing I would Encourage. You can Be JOE COOL and I'll be Check Everything Nev. OK?
  18. Pure Magic is it? A BELIEF A Religion?. It works till it doesn't. The Gazelle has a Heat Knob. Maybe it's just for Pretending. Anyhow I ALWAYS insisted the student made sure it was FULLY cold at the same time the throttle was fully open every Time. Leaving carb Heat ON WILL significantly Reduce POWER but It's needed to ensure EFFECTIVE results. Proper Application is Before reducing Power on Descent and DON'T DO long descents without Power. Normal stuff, Don't forget you can get Carb ice in 30 + degree Ambient air. The carb works Like a refrigerator. Rapid atomisation of a liquid and the Air expands adiabatically. and cools. Physics that Cannot be wished away. The heated Manifold in the cars was for Idling in traffic and Pollution. Same reason you were fitting TOO Hot plugs to Many Cars. None of this CAR thing HAS anything to do with Aeroplanes. It's just Muddying the Waters. Nev
  19. Not My Point. How do you handle a gust or tilt. THINK about it. IF you didn't disengage the torque to the rotor you'd Be out of Control immediately You are using the grip on the ground and you HAVE to Bounce it into the Air and HOPE. I would NOT Be using that technique. It was just showing OFF and DANGEROUS. Nev
  20. Moneybox, Don't Worry Mate. I think WE are Just different. I'm a Bit fanatical about how engines are running and cared for. AS an example I would not have driven your van across the Nullabor without changing the Oils and filter in case the sludge got stirred up, as can happen and wreck the Motor . Vans are often driven by anyone who generally doesn't give a stuff about them and My Mechanic mates tell of Operators WHO don't Service Vehicles, Councils, Taxi owners Vans etc to save Money . ALSO some fool mucking around with the Airbox Of a Plane I flew made it use 23 Litres/hr instead of the Usual 16 Liters which it had Previously operated at. I thought it had developed a Fuel Leak. I'm just Not as trusting as you are from experience in engine recondition and seeing the effect of neglect and Bad work and design on things and also on Planes Putting MY life at risk. Some Participants Have a rather cavalier Attitude to Maintenance and I don't Like it. Maybe that's why I've NEVER Hurt anyone or Damaged a Plane. "She'll Be right" Is NOT ME. Never will Be. It's an aeroplane Not a Game. and I've had plenty of associates kill them selves or get seriously injured Predictably. Nev
  21. I could NEVER work out what you did with the DUCK. Maybe I will find out Next Quakker Night? I canardly wait. There's LOTS of them land on My New DAM. The OLD one re furbished. 6 Meters deep In the Middle. Nev
  22. Well It's an easy way out. The Pilot is at the scene of the (Assumed) CRIME. Saves wasting time thinking about other Possibilities.. As soon as a Plane is Involved in something the Lawyers Get excited. Nev
  23. You haven't taken aboard all the Points I Made either. It's Less efficient and Harder on the engine. You go for efficiency in other areas. Why NOT this one? Is it Because I Brought it up? Nev
  24. It has Rotor Spin up but I can't see How a Lift off without cyclic can have the control required to safely translate to forward flight. Nev
  25. I'm eFing wasting my time. You haven't listened to a word, Getting away with it doesn't mean it's the Best . There are Laid down figures to Meet, Turbo'd and Injected Models should be OK and there's Plenty of Heat/ Vaporisation issues with that fuel system and carb type/Location already. Nev
