  1. They wear out in the bore fairly quickly, But run well. Are they still made? nev
  2. Never having to warm the engine up would save time. Engine reliability should be better. How about for Powered Gliders? Nev
  3. Those Belstaff Waxed canvas Jackets left Black stuff all over the cream and Blue seats at the Paragon Cafe. . Full Leathers is your own Body Bag. Very tidy. There were many times when My only vehicle was a Motor Bike. Nev
  4. Eventually the waterproof garment keeps the water IN if you ride long enough.. . How do I know this? Nev
  5. When it's aircooled you don't Have all this problem with rubber PIPES, coolant and pressure caps, pumps and leaks. (dare I mention). Then you can FLY in the AIR. Nev
  6. Dog Allbitey? Nev
  7. I have it specifically signed off in my logbook on a CPL giving me authority to teach it.. It can give you a minimum energy loss course reversal, when you get it right.. Nev
  8. Living near SALT Water. "In God we Rust". Nev
  9. They said it was a stuffed Up, wing over but if he got inverted is would be like falling out of a barrel roll.. Clean aeroplanes get fast, fast when the nose is pointed straight at the ground. Nev
  10. Conrods generally fail in tension. Changing direction near the top of the stroke. They want to keep going. Nev
  11. It's certain that the speed of the Plane would affect the radiator you use. Also the Power output of the engine.. and the ambient air temp where you might operate. Shutters or Cowl Gills anybody? Heat and drag control. A hotter running motor is more efficient in a technical sense. Then there's the Quicker warm up, and the under cowl temps after landing. Nev
  12. I don't think we are talking about long range jet aircraft, but an electric motor for a U/L can be quite light. The power drop off at altitude doesn't happen so flying higher would save energy. Nev
  13. It's about temps Cycles accumulating. You usually chuck a Rod when changing gear at high revs. It's a "specific" overstress. Nev
  14. You are Meant to Know how big your plane is and where everything goes on full lock. If anything is suspiciously close someone should have their head out the window as you "inch" along. You should not get into that position in the 1st Place. IF in doubt STOP. Nev
  15. The best type of oil cooler is one that bolts straight onto the crankcase. SOME engines just don't need them. Nev
  16. Nearly all take-offs are done with reduced thrust to improve engine life. Nev
  17. The Combat "DEAL" in the Late 50s was a Fox 35 in an "ALL AMERICAN" plane with reflex wing section with fully UP/Down flaps . At Lambton Oval in Newcastle with my mate, we'd go through about a gallon of shell A and Castrol R mix. About 42 in Wingspan I think and the inside wing was bigger than the Outer one. One time a couple of blokes came over and gave us a fiver as they had been betting on who would cut whose streamer all the while. Getting inverted made it challenging. Nev
  18. Likely due to the Storms around. Normal procedure is to investigate and possibly recommend retraining or avoidance RADAR or use a higher climb speed. Some planes have a thing like Alpha floor where the engines automatically go to a full power setting in such circumstances. At lower altitudes there is a LOT of Reserve Power available on modern twin jet engined planes
  19. As well as cold you should worry about circulation and clots forming if you don't keep moving a bit. Keeping hydrated plays a part there also. Exhaust muff heaters have a history of CO leakage but CO can enter through almost any place as the interior is usually below atmospheric pressure.. Flying in Below zero C air can include the risk of airframe icing if you enter cloud or on descents with a Cold soaked airframe. Nev
  20. Where's the CAR function? Nev
  21. Pretty good choice of Aircraft. Nev
  22. Probably COMPLETELY Unrelated Causally. Just sensation. Nev
  23. There's a vast choice and you make an informed decision or just buy what was there if it works OK.. I don't think there's a debate to Have. Walk in and say "Have you got something LIKE THIS in stock?". Mention it's for an aeroplane and they will tell you to go elsewhere.. Nev
  24. Wet or Dry season is what matters on such a trip. Over 4-8 weeks a forecast won't be available. You might have to stay somewhere if it turns pear shaped, weather wise. Could be unsettled in the Southern Part in Spring and some icing getting back to CBR. Be a full bottle with your weather information. Fuel in remote areas may be expensive. I wouldn't fly over the Gulf Just after Cape York and I'd consider being near roads when POSSIBLE & CARRY WATER. and 2 radios. Nev
