  1. I don't have a Rotax 916, yet. Was using the example of the 916 to show how good 98 pulp is in a high compression turbocharged engine with a very high specific output.
  2. I would use unleaded 98 in my avgas burners if it was legal to do so. The Rotax 916 has a compression ratio of 9:1, it runs 50, yes 50 inches of manifold pressure to achieve the 160hp from the same 1352cc as a 912uls. Service ceiling is 23,000 feet. I think that covers detonation and vapour lock.
  3. Using aeroshell 15w50 instead of aeroshell 100 or w100 will help with cranking speed in cold weather. It can be used all year round and may even increase oil pressure in very hot situations.
  4. Lycoming and Continental engines have been proven over a long time period to love running on unleaded fuel just as much as Rotax do. We just need the legal to be in place. Compression ratio is lower in lycons. Valves seats are hard.
  5. You cannot do a CASA licence flight review in a RAAus aircraft because any CASA licenced instructor qualified to perform said review will know the rules.
  6. I heard a pilot in bound to tumut being corrected by another pilot a few weeks ago on the most common ctaf frequency.
  7. It will have a stick shaker, nice.

    Ch601 hds flaps

Aircraft with properly designed flaps such as PA-28 Cherokee or Beech23 musketeer only achieve a stall speed reduction of 4 to 7 knots, these Aircraft have a similar stall speed to a ch601hds. Yes a steeper approach can be achieved. In my experience it makes no difference to ease of landing having flaps.
  9. Aeroshell 100 also changed from black to red bottles in 2014, same formulation.
  10. A storm in a teacup is an idiom that describes a situation where people get excessively angry, worried, or dramatic about a trivial or unimportant matter. It means a minor issue has been severely exaggerated out of proportion
  11. Only broke three windows in the house all other sheds and hangers are good.
  12. Was almost the last flight for my Thruster last night, a narrow mini tornado demolished the old wool shed and 100 ton silo. Picked up a mobile field bin and set it down with minimal damage where 12 trees used to be. Thruster was in the black shade cloth door hangar only 30 -40 metres from the destructive path. Sheets of tin went over a kilometer down wind. Feeling very lucky.
  13. I love my 180hp RV6a, vans total performance is real. Very fast, beautiful control feel, easy to land at the farm strip. I had never even flown in an RV when I bought it, just based my decision on everything I had read about them.
  14. Removing the fuel pump and using a borescope should show if the 4 bearing screws and the oil jet are in place. This may not be an approved procedure.
  15. Looks like only one gear retracted, possibly a big distraction for the pilot. Pilot reports on the mk26 say the performance and handling is something like an RV which the pilot had plenty of experience in.
  16. 28-482 was cancelled in January 2009.
  17. I have been offered a breezy to fly solo, not going to happen. I don't like the idea of no structure to assess attitude. The thought of the seat belt coming undone also gives me some concern.
  18. Log book said 28 hours, I think it was available for Holbrook ultralight club members. Very original and good condition. There is quite a difference in the way it flys compared to the RV6😁.
  19. The possible sequence of events would be, at gear retraction broken nose gear hydraulic cylinder extending pushes nose wheel steering and rudder left. Pilots see, feel left yaw and suspect left engine failure, left engine shut down and feathered compounding problem. Hopefully all DA42 pilots will get to read the reports.
  20. Fleet | canberra-aeroclub WWW.CANBERRA-AEROCLUB.COM.AU Nice fleet at Canberra aero club. Price is reasonable. Clubs are good places to meet like minded people.
  21. The landing fees and charges at Horn island are somewhat complex and would result in a very large ERSA entry.
  22. Turbo, you missed the passenger charge, it applies to arrival and departure, i calculated $53.20 x 2 for a 4 seat aircraft. Total cost for a J400 overnight stop about $150. Good idea to call the ARO before going to remote airports.
  23. Here is a picture for you Nev, Agcat from coota and my ag pilot friend and I have almost identical thruster singles.
  24. One problem with aircraft ownership is finding a hangar, none at Canberra and parking on the grass is something like $4k per year. I would learn to fly and so how much you like it. There is a syndicate at Canberra with a Vans RV8, a fun to fly fast, useful, beautiful aircraft, the buy in price will be cheaper than any build now that every thing is getting expensive. Renting is also a good option, plenty of choice of aircraft type. Join the local aero club.
  25. We flew into Longreach last August for an overnight stay, beautiful flying weather, country looking magnificent, only 5 aircraft on site. Perhaps the 50m insurance scared everyone away. Just looked at the website listed in the current ERSA for Longreach and there is no mention of any insurance requirements, what more can one do? Turbo, your posts are always doom and gloom scare mongering. One can plan around RPT ops with a quick check on FR24 for arrivals and departures times. A transponder, traffic on the screen, TCAS in the RPT make it very safe nowadays.
