There is no comparison between an amature/club magazine produced by the mebers and one that employs, supposedly, skilled people (journalists?)to deliver a professional publication (SP?).😈

No, there's not, so as a member of a limited volume group, what would you be expecting?

  2. Not many people know about the Cat House in Moorabbin, but Turbo had it built in the Branson Missouri style cosy theatre style.

When it was finished, he couldn't get any performers at his Trump type rates, so he had to do something himself and the onlt thing he had learned in school was the Gettysburg Address, so he hired 40 drummers using cut lengths of dowling from Bunnings and old Paint thinners tins as drums and hired 40 itinerant refugees from Tasmania, and bought the organ from the Neerim South Uniting Church and some eery lighting.

Turbo dressed up like Abe Lincoln and to a sellout crowd (takings $43,000.00) he began to speak. Unfortunately he started with "Three Score years and Ten" which is the burial service for over 70s, but the rest went well, and as the clients filed out many were asked whether "this was intermission?"

Of course at Gettysburgh Abe was the last to speak. Most of the luminaries went for a couple of hours, one for several hours, but when Abe came to the lectern his speech only lasted 2 minutes and he blew them all away.

Everybody is invited to put forward stories that they feel may be of interest to others. It's ok to sit back and have a grumble about the magazines content but how many aviators put pen to paper for the rest of us to read? If you have a story that is worthy of publication get it out there and then the rest of us might enjoy flicking through the SP magazine.

Most sports have the same problem, it's always someone else's job to write the stories.

Same problem with finding people to attend shows, get things done  etc. They always have an excuse, "I have a wedding on that day" is the favourite. I was asking one guy and he didn't think before he answered "I'm gonna be sick that day".

Never a straight answer from you. Anyone who's interested can look up the names. They are not critical to the discussion.. Motor sports are much easier to manage than "flying things" and the "Potential" Liability is a lot less.  The "Black flag" is an analogy as you well know that can't be done with a plane. There's plenty of other things that are very different. You just won't ever accept that.  Your lack of in depth Understanding of Aviation is constantly on  show in this matter.   Nev

Let's not fantasise; what I put up were the basics; we don't need to know a team of medical specialists to brush our teeth.

Motor Sport had nothing to do with what I was saying. An Understanding of Aviation is not necessary to understand that AUF started before CASA did and CASA welcomed self administering Associations, and when all this came together.

AUF was up and running for years before CASA was a gleam in someone's eye.

But it nice and shiny, with lovely glossy pages produced at great cost 🤢 The membership pays?

    They do.

There was a long and bitter fight over it and the old geysers won because they said they couldn't read off screens.

CASA was only one of many names for the One Government Body, so your first statement is misleading. Then you go on with your usual comparison with Motor sport and  aviation.  CARs don't FLY and you can't black flag a plane.. When planes slow down they fall out of the sky at the bottom of it. Cars just pull off the side of the track. Nev

I noticed no one was really aware of ANYTHING about that era so I've just put up the dates, so you'll be able to fill us in on all these "many other names", and where someone might be trying to "black flag" a plane, and why.

I'm not picking on CASA, but history tells us that they have moved away from administering individual aircraft in favour of administering an organisation that administers the lower levels of aviation - Models, ultralights, hang gliders etc.  .

CASA was founded on July 6, 1995.

The Australian Ultralight Federation (AUF) with the aircraft this thread is talking about was established in 1983.

At the time the State, Territory and Federal Governments were closing down sporting and workplace administration because of exponential cost explosion as a result of lawsuits for negligence. Victoria's Department of Labour and Industry which admininstered some high risk sports like motor racing was shut down.  Governments started providing some limited protection for groups who registered Incorporated associations and complied with a Model Constitution and Public Liability Insurers came up with packages that were affordable and the new Associations took off.

    A Part 103 "aircraft" is:

a sailplane, hang glider, powered hang glider, paraglider, powered paraglider or registered touring motor glider

    empty weight under 70 kg

listed with a Part 103 ASAO - that's an Approved Self - administering Aviation Organisation - like RAAus, GFA etc

Note the empty weight. so you are usually part of the frame.

CASA doesn't want these micro flying things, so they insist that an ASAO take on the responsibility.  Any group that takes on something like this will have COSTS that have to be passed on to "members".  Then they will have to shoulder some of the responsibility - more costs, more oversight.  Getting much like RAAus?

CASA provide the freedom to fly away from paddocks and above 300 feet for the AUF spread of aircraft, but all had to be Self Administering AUF agreed to that and Recreational Aiircraft came out of the paddocks and cross country RA was possible.

So it's wrong to pick on CASA saying they don't want these "micro flying things" when the participants today self administer many different classes without problems all over Australia. Most of them are nopt "getting much like RAAus", they are RAAus registered, including light single seaters.

  9. .......tears to the eyes of Cockatoo lovers everywhere. Turbo is a member of the Cockatoo Spotters Association, which as it happens is currently in session and Turbo is able to write this as old George is giving us a list of the C.Genii he's potted in the last month and that will take about an hour.

In his earlier days Turbo had bought a cockatoo and taught it to screech if the cats messed around or fought when they were supposed to be asleep after monitoring fur growth and finding a lack of sleep produced less furry skins.

He'd trained the cockatoo to mimic his old grandmother, because she could really arc up if the Young Turbo wasn't in bed and asleep by 9 pm.

Harley, the cocky just seemed to stir the cats up, so he taught it the whole Gettysburg Address, and all were asleep by the end, until ........

You would have to look at USA FAA documents for that. The link is just the Australian CASR.

But I would have to say the pressure will be on, public opinion will be part of that. Not to mention the general publicity, amongst the wider community?

That just relates to what was referred to the DPP regarding the actions of whoever was referred, so a very narrow field, not the wider community. If there's a clain, that's when they can look at you.

    Did ASIC work??????????🤣😈

Would you expect it to be relevant to a person who broke through the "Security" fence and walked up to the airctraft with a loaded shotgun? Call me dumb.n, but I'd be looking at beefing up the security fence.

This was not a terrorist ariving to take flying lessons.

Big difference between building an airstrip and landing your aircraft on your property. Kind of like parking a car in your backyard vs building a carpark.

Right now I'm working on 12 Tribunal cases concurrently, on one where the game is to ensure I don't qualify to be heard, several renaming the Use to the difference of prime steak vs maggots, 5 Truck parks for around 400 trucks each in land zoned for agriculture, a toxic soil operation (with a remediation cost of millions.) and two Subdivisions - all timed to hit us over the Christmas holiday period a lot of it is in the names like your example where the landing aircraft becomes an unmarked, unsafe aerodrome with a huge risk of slamming through end fences into agricultural machinery and photos showing (a) Tullamarine, how it should be and (b) a boghole on a very wet day just when the Landcruiser is bogged in the middle of the strip.

I would advise not going down the path of a formal airstrip/field/landing ground, unless there is some other intent/plan that needs this sort of asset.

    • A nicely mown, well drained paddock, of a suitable length, orientation and clear arrival / departure routes,  will meet most aircraft needs.
    • For sizeable rural properties, a farm track can be improved, to serve as runway.

In most cases, neither of the above will require planning / zoning approval.

Why prod the beast (Council/Planning Authority) if you don't need to?😈

You built an airstrip 8 years ago and got a permit for it. The Specificatioon was to CASA standards.

A character like the one here moves in feels the planes are flying too low and goes to the Council.

The Council checks to see if there's a permit; tick

The permit date is 8 years ago; tick, in most states it will have existing Use rights, so you can't be stopped.

He goes back to the Character and politely informs him the runway end will see aircraft flying 650 ' above his house, so try double glazing.

    The Skippy Way

Checks the permit files - no permit, so doesn't worry to go further because there'll be no existing use rights.

He checks the Zoning and finds the airfield is now in an Affordable Homes overlay, and Airfields are now in Section 3 - Prohibited.

The Compliance and Enforcement Offier shows up at the door to say there's been a complaint and he noticed you had no permit.........................and it all goes down the tubes.

  17. There is a long and comprehensive thread on this on this site.

If you want to build an airfield:

Go to the State or Territory Planning Schemes.

Find the online Planning Maps (interactive)

    Input the address

The map will show the Zone and any Overlay.

Go to the Council's Planning site; most have an online Planning portal

    Input the address

See what your selected Zone allows in Section 1 or Section 2 (Permit required)

    Section 3 shows Prohibited.

Go on the CASA site and find the  Airfield specifications. including splays and approaches.

You'll either be  flying or returning it to pasture.

If you move in next to an airfield

    Follow the same procedure.

Find out how long it has been operating; it may have Existing Use rights.
