  1. OK, this is almost a necropost now but just wanted to thank everyone that contributed, this was an interesting discussion.

It has led me to re-think my typical track-up approach to in-cockpit map reading. I'm going to have a crack at north-up, see if I can get the hang of it. I know this is going to be tricky when flying in a southerly direction but I really like the advantages - simple to determine wind direction, runway orientation / number and approach direction.

Of course it may also drive me nuts and get me lost.

But I wish there was more honesty and frankness on all sides irrespective of what one stands for. Back to thread topic, I hope Andrew succeeds. Agriculture is extremely important to this country even more so as mining slows.

  3. All the best Andrew!

Not if you're honest simplicity at its best

Unfortunately the lapdog media love to shred honest people in particular - it's so foreign to them it just seems weird I guess. The same meeja people can't understand why most of us common folk don't just luuuurv their boss lady, what's er name.

  4. Have just been flying in Melbourne, had 3 days of perfect weather. Got to go in both a Steel Breeze and the Summit, both machines are fitting with elliptical wings. I was surprised how good the preformance was with both machines, very stable, good climb rate with two up . The Steel Breeze in the flesh is much bigger and robust then it appears in photos, also welds and finish are of a very high quality. My Steel Breeze is on its way North now, looking forward to putting it together and getting the ball rolling. Found a freight company in Melbourne that went out of their way to help me and at a good price, guess it pays to look around.Tim

I'd be interested in an update once you have flown a bit, these look an interesting machine. Also what is the major difference in the rectangular vs elliptical wings - speed / manoeuvrability / safety?

  5. Do you have blue eyes? Blue eyes are certainly much more photosensitive than brown, and I also get quite a shock of pain from bright lights on dark nights.

Apparently there is laser surgery now that permanently turns dark coloured eyes to pale blue by removing the melanin. One day I'll see a blue eyed African or Indian but I haven't yet, that would be something. 052_no_way.gif.ab8ffebe253e71283aa356aade003836.gif

Back on topic I would try to find a knowledgeable optometrist & ask their opinion. Also plan to do about 200 landings before you start to get used to a specific aircraft (timing this for last light isn't going to be easy!) Lastly if you can find a super long runway do a lot of flying along at varying heights & multiple touches. My 2c worth.

  6. What is in armorall that gives it the UV protection?

Hmm.... in my younger days I was in this business for a while and Armorall is the one product we would never apply to quality car dashboards as it accelerated their ageing in the sun. None of the manufacturers would recommend it's use also if I recall (which in itself may not necessarily mean a lot though). If the car was just for sale no problem, always makes it look good although dust does stick a little more. Now they have better dash materials and UV block in the glass so this is much less of an issue but a big problem in past decades.

  7. Kate told me the three GM candidates were neck and neck at the end of the interviews on Thursday with Hunter ahead by a hair. But that on Friday morning, before the remaining two TM interviews got underway, it was decided that Mark’s personality would be a better fit in RA Aus.

How about that, discrimination eh? And in Canberra too. Isn't there laws against this, should not all three have gotten the job? 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

  8. As much as I am down on SA with its terminal economic decline and inept high taxing government gotta admit it has pretty much the best flying weather. Useful when there are few safe roads and almost no highways! 021_nod.gif.30c66a33e1ed960b5b5d3fc7b345b58d.gif

I think reading Eric's report on flight training at Ghoulburn (sic) made me realise this! Some more rain would be welcome here though, also been waiting for ages for a little wind to practise cross wind landings.

  9. When you begin dividing up the overheads - you need to be doing 500 hrs pa to keep them within bounds. Let's say your financing costs are $3000 pa, your insurance $3000 pa, your depreciation $5000, and your hangarage $1500 pa = $12500 pa. Even 500 hrs utilisation creates a $22.50/hr cost, and many schools are doing less hours, on $120k aircraft. It's not unusual for overheads to be in the $30-40 per hour range.

With a limited market when you might only be doing 500 hours simply jacking up the price is only going to reduce demand further. Some lateral thought might work here, how about offering a significantly discounted rate for folk that agree (contract) to hire for a minimum number of hours per year.

Governments use this prinicple, tax something you get less of it, subsidise it and demand increases. Demonise and tax the wealthy more and your country ends up with less wealth. Make welfare easier to obtain..... a larger pool of Labor voters! 003_cheezy_grin.gif.c5a94fc2937f61b556d8146a1bc97ef8.gif

  10. Welcome Peter! A question about the terminology is a 'paramotor' the same as a powered parachute (PPC)? Or does legs vs wheels make a difference to the name?

And lastly what restrictions do you operate under in regard to height, I notice your website says "if you want to fly more than 300 feet above the ground..."? Thanks GG.
