I'm about to fabric my fuselage.. will photos suffice with my log. The inspector will be able to gain access to look at it after. Albeit visual only, checking torque values on the rods and cables  etc will not me possible.

Thanks Lyndon

Ask Tech at SAAA; or the inspectors, that way you get it right.  Best if send an email that way you have a written reply to add to the paper work.

Why don't you put in Inspection panels when you are doing the fabric.? You may find that they are required. Nev

The RAAus requirement is 3;  Extract from tech manual; 3.1.3 STAGE INSPECTIONS To provide assurance of appropriate processes and construction techniques during the build process, a minimum of three staged build inspections should be carried out by an RAAus L1 (approved by the HAM on evidence of having previously constructed an amateur built aircraft), L2 or L4 maintainer. These staged build inspections of the aircraft should be conducted at key points of the construction of the aircraft, including, but not limited to, prior to closing of structures, engine installation, painting, rigging of primary flight controls and or wings, etc. Once each build inspection is complete, advice of completion is to be supplied by the stage inspector to RAAus using Tech Form 002 - Stage Inspection Amateur Built Aircraft within 14 days. The form is retained in the aircraft file at RAAus. Recording of the build inspection should also be entered in the aircraft builder’s log.

SAAA will have their requirements; They will advise what is required if he does not know or have questions.  Not doing them can end in a world of extra work and hurt.

My TC wanted to see the wings prior to skinning. I’m pretty sure that’s the SAAA requirement.

Same for the control circuits, I believe.  Bilders should have the recipe for the build process.  I am not a member of SAAA so don't know their requirements.

Why would someone come onto a Recreational Aviation Australia site and ask a question that could get several opinions (none of which contain SAAA sources) which could see he aircaft modified to an illegal specification of inspected by SAAA?

Why, if you had an SAAA aircraft, would you not refer to SAAA, so you could at least sell it some time?

It's only a few weeks ago that I posted the FoI document I obtained from CASA on their audit of RAA aircraft.

Ok so SAAA is my go to source for a VH registration expirmental. Requirements are completely different to ro RaAus ??

I'm in two minds but I believe the VH registration is benifitial in my case.

Thanks for the answers

(Talk about tribal BS)

This is NOT exclusively an RAA site.

Its open to & patronised by all pilots who wish to do so, no matter the aircraft type or registration.

Well let's talk about tribal BS if you want to.

It has NOTHING to do with tribal BS

Let's get that straight.

It had EVERYTHING to do with unqualified people handing out BS advice when each orgalisation has appointed, qualified people to answer questions.

Yes, best you talk to each. I’m happy for a pm re RAAus but can’t assist re SAAA in any capacity. Seems your build is underway so recommend you contact each then you can decide. Best regards Mike

Thanks mike.

As the rules change regularly, thus the questions. This is my second build, the first is a registered VH expirmental. No inspections at all until it was finished and then inspected. Photos and a log only. When I started this build the VH way was better for weight and costs. There was talk about increasing weight with the RAaus. I believe I can get 703kg with VH rego. I can go either way. ! I'm thinking with the new rules I may be able to achieve that with RaAus as well. Please chime in. I'm after the easiest and most cost effective way forward.

For a long time now. learned people have told ME that VH exp is the way to go for the Most surety and freedom. No  later adjustments would incline me to change that view. Regarding inspection access,  put them where you will require access to check /service as well as what's Mandated. It's better than cutting holes later and having to touch up the Paint. Nev

For builder and owner maintenance and over 600kg (your 703 target) go SAAA.   RAA not fully ready for the 760 max yet, only select are in at present and the maintenance is only LAME and no other option available as yet and maybe a while away.

That's a deal breaker. I'm hoping this time next year looking to get it into the next stage. Hanger and flight. Will contact the saaa on Tuesday for inspection info.

Thanks for all the help.

the maintenance is only LAME

If you are the builder and you have done the required maintenance procedures course (SAAA are the only approved supplier of an MPC at the moment) then you can do your own maintenance under Group G (<760kg). In fact, the reason for the LAME-only stipulation (with the exception of the above) is that CASA has made Group G almost identical to VH experimental, so it’s a coin-flip as to which way you go. It’s not what RAAus wanted, but CASA makes the rules.

Agree mostly; however have not seen any recent updates to my understanding that RAAus not accepting the SAAA MPC;  There is a process to send MPC and the training to CASA for some sort of acceptance.  I am awaiting the guidance and process details.  Yes; Pilot maintenance is described but that doesn't cover all scheduled items in annual inspections etc.

As I am building a Group G aircraft, I have been in constant contact with RAAus. I’ve done the SAAA course, and RAAus have accepted the qualification (including weight & balance). This relates to full maintenance, not just pilot maintenance.

That's great to hear. Lyndon should contact you direct to hear how the RAAus system currently happens.

From the RAAus website:

Who will be able to maintain an amateur built or Experimental Group G aircraft?
A CASA Part 66 licence holder (LAME) or the builder of the amateur built or experimental aircraft, who meets the requirements of CASA instrument 18/22.

So if you are the builder and have 18/22 you are good to maintain your own aircraft.
