Blue, any update on your 600KG Nynja?

Its close; received message that will be approved to fly early next week.  We've had short weeks and school holidays over here so expected possible delay. Didn't matter much two weeks ago as weather was horrible, great now.  I'll post when I have paperwork back.  Thanks for asking, Cheers.

 I received a text from RAAus Tech that all my Nynja’s paperwork regarding w&b has been approved and will receive email approval to 600 kg tomorrow. Yeeha!

Got the Nynja back in the air today after the 600kg upgrade. The cloud base was down to about 1400 feet in places so needed to stay low.  Fly again tomorrow. Also getting there with upgrade to ‘Spirit of Kittyhawk’ for Ben, just waiting on a few parts from Flylight in UK.

Just completed an enjoyable trip from Palmyra at Mackay to Longreach, then Charleville, then Roma and then home to Palmyra.  Total flight time was 11.3 hours (engine hobbs) over 6 days.  OAT was down to 6 at times so ordering a cabin heat unit from UK today so better prepared next trip.  Had gloves but thin socks and light sport shoes so a bit cold, however not unbearable. My wife Sandy enjoyed the trip.  Also the armrest I have been using over the last year is very comfortable and worked great and is better with the chain to adjust the height / angle (Firm feel, no springiness the cord made) it is turned up and away for takeoff and landing.

Fabricated a new style vent to trial in my wing tanks. Have completed one as a trial / proof of concept (it’s a spare that a mate gave me). Drilled a 3.5mm bore in the bolt on a mates lathe today so now ready to fit to one tank and give it a tryout.

Noice! Make sure you carry a plastic cap for the vent tube to stop the mud-dauber wasps. I think CASA say it only takes 20 mins after landing for a mud-dauber wasp to block an opening.

These are my covers that prevent the mud wasps.  (There is a mud wasp build on the end of the pitot cover.)

I think Mike they need to be more forward in the airstream. Like they are they will act like a vacumm sucker and possibly draw fuel out there will be no positive pressure going into the tank.

This is how I rebent the tube ends into the airflow flow. Worked well today so will fly agin to trial the fit up over the next couple of weeks, before doing the other filler cap. Thanks for comment Mark.

Took the Nynja for a fly on the weekend to Lake Dunn, a 207 N/ml each way and stayed overnight.  29 aircraft attended the catchup.  It's never an advertised event as it's just a by word of mouth catchup of flying friends.   The strip is to be extended about 100 meters to comply with RFDS aircraft requirements.  The strip was in perfect surface condition.  Weather was excellent and tail winds of about 15 knots each way so can not complain.

Nice morning for a Nynja fly to the beach catching up with flying friends. Summer is on the way so below the clouds has thermals starting by mid morning. Nice and cool under the tree canopy at the beach. Sand was hard and smooth a top landing strip.

Getting ready to weigh tomorrow. Just need all items and engine oil out. Nynja at it’s level orientation for weighing.

  • You must get a certified professional to do you W&B. Assuming that CASA has not reinstated RAA permission to do so. Ceri (Kerrie) Bartlett   <[email protected]> , did mine November 22.
  • The aircraft must be weighed with ALL permanent items on board (including oil, POH, etc).
  • Fuel tanks must  be empty.
  • The aircraft will be weighed with & without pilot - this is how you get the Zero Fuel Weigh.
  • Can only use certified scales, usually  suppled by certified W&B person who signs of on all documents/calculations..

They preferer to weigh on a level floor,  in an enclosed space (no wind/draft effect).

Unless the rules have changed (always possible)  your weighing efforts have only delivered interesting (not approved) data which can not legally be used for flight.

The above statesmen is missing almost half of what I wrote;

"Getting ready to weigh tomorrow. Just need all items and engine oil out. Nynja at it’s level orientation for weighing."

"I received a text from RAAus Tech that all my Nynja’s paperwork regarding w&b has been approved"

I assume CASA has reinstated RAA's authority to approve W&B testing.

However from the little you have shown & commented on I would question the legality of your process;

From imperfect memory;

My W&B conducted by Ceri (Kerrie) Bartlett   <[email protected]> , November 2022.

  • The aircraft must be weighed with ALL permanent items on board (including oil, coolant, POH, upholstery, extinguisher, etc).
  • Permanent items listed/documented
  • Fuel tanks must  be empty.
  • The aircraft will be weighed with & without pilot - this is how you get the Empty & Zero Fuel Weigh.
  • Can only use certified scales, usually  suppled by certified W&B person, who signs of on all documents/calculations.
  • Weighed on a level floor,  in an enclosed space (no wind/draft effect).

Unless the rules have changed (always possible) your weighing efforts  may have only delivered interesting (not CASA approved) data which  is of suspect legal validity.😈

Yep correct; when I wrote the post you refer to, I had been informed that engine oil had to be removed for the weighing (at the time I thought that is odd and contrary to previous). Checked further and that information was incorrect for some reason.   Weighed with engine oil at full and other equipment etc.
