  1. RA-Aus on Facebook. Yes there are 3 facebook pages. The official one under Places, another automatically generated by Facebook & one under Aerospace/Defence. Personally I don't think they have presented anything (Official page) much at all. The tab "About" which is the page to describe what RA-Aus is all About is blank. The timeline is typical with blurbs from staff mostly, 13 reviews, 11 of which gave the site 5 stars & 2 gave it 4 stars (can't think why they'd be this high) & there are a bunch of photos. The heading describes Ra-Aus as "Sports and recreation - Aviation school" not even correct with recreation & school in lower case. A poor effort from what should be a professional setup. Zero stars from me.

I don't think that is fair... I have seen more communication from Ra-Aus on Facebook in the last 2 weeks then in any previous period...Nothing safety related...mostly fun posts... which is exactly what Facebook is good for...its a great way to get new people involved... just tell a young person to look it up on Facebook and you have a resource 100 times more useful then the magazine.

  2. They have seen RAA being popular and begun to offer their own RPL!

My recollection of events is more like someone/s in the AUF at the time saw a business opening in "Recreational" General Aviation and hijacked the Australian Ultralight Federation to pull of a balmy and ineffectual attempt to manage said business. Explains the hiccup... the Federation was never structured to perform the job it took on... it was structured to manage a network of clubs/club like organisations on behalf of CASA. Brings us to today when suddenly yes... thanks to the AUF/Ra-Aus...army call it....CASA has realised there is a market for Recreational Flying and is just updating their regs to better provide for a market segment that...lets face it... was always theirs.

  3. JohnYoung people have no issues in general with electronic magazines...in fact no issues with electronic anything....... Its my view that generating an electronic version of a our magazine is likely to garner more interest in the younger parts of our population than the paper copy does now..Ask any parent with teenage or 20's kids and Im pretty sure you'll get the same story.

WRT membership numbers, today we are steadily increasing our membership numbers, I suggest that you review the financial reports that the CEO places on the member portal, in his commentary on the financials he talks to membership and aircraft fleet growth each 1/4yr and you can get the exact percentage growth figures from his commentary.

Lastly there is an error of fact in your post, RAAus will not "discontinue issuing monthly hard copy magazines to members" we will set everyone up to receive an electronic copy and at the same time provide you with an online link to set up to continue getting a paper copy if you want that and are prepared to pay the cost for that. You have a choice, its up to you as to what you do. If you, like me, are of the generation that is likely to prefer paper then choose that if you want. We will not force you to do one thing or the other. If you act when we say you need to act then as I understand it you will never be forced to look at the electronic copy and should have absolute continuity in your paper copys....just that you'll get a paper copy about a month after you will already have had access to the electronic copy....More power to you if you can withstand the temptation to read the latest and greatest now but rather happy to wait a month....those that do take up the option of the electronic mag will have a month at the start where they get 2 mags in one month as they catch up the months delay of the paper one

    Andy

And that will be the death of Ra-Aus Andy... kids don't have the money to go flying.

  4. I always liked the Magazine in paper copy... why? Because in my opinion it always was and always will be a bloody good read... It is a shame to see it go. I guess I have no problem with paper disappearing...we have to be realistic....but it is a sad loss.

  5. http://www.aph.gov.au/Senators_and_Members/Parliamentarian?MPID=GT4He doesn't seem to care too much about aviation unless its RPT

It is an LNP Government. Even though Truss claims to be a National Party Member he is still at the beck and call of the Liberal...which ironically in Australia stands for profit at any cost "keep it all sweet and you too might win the Old Rich White Guy Lottery" philosophy we seem to be finally waking up to.

  6. So, after all this time, you've fired RAA as the administrator?

NO... they fired themselves when they stopped administering to "Ultralights" and started trying to take on the bottom end of GA.

I am amazed that their hasn't been a BIG outcry over Michael Monck's letter in the February (I think) magazine about competition. I read it to say "Its all over unless something political happens"... CASA is back and RA-Aus is now irrelevant.

  7. the irony of writing that. how many hours a month do you spend online?http://issuu.com/sportpilotmagazine

Bloody awesome! I feel really bad for anyone who missed out on their NBN... personally I reckon the online mag is amazing...

Sadly the first thing I read from Michael Monck about competition indicates worrying about the Ra-Aus magazine is like worrying about a mosquito bite when you are being trampled by an elephant...

  8. Strangely enough Marty,. . . we had an opencast coal extraction facility just a couple of clicks up the road from where I live. It was started in 1983 and closed down in 1999. The hole in the ground was 650 feet deep, and over a haf mile wide. I once watched some hoons in trikes flying down into the hole ( four of them. . . ) circling out and flying away. The mining company organised a land fill, and that site is now completely filled and invisible. ( as of around six years ago ) so it can be done, and it's a great place to stick all yer garbage ! ! !

That sounds more like a small quarry...The BIG mines leave great areas that have no more in common with the natural order of things for the area they have destroyed then neat orderly rows of pine trees in the plantations on the South Coast.

  9. What are these subsidies and what is this clever accounting? Is the latter illegal and if so have you notified the ATO? Or is it instead perfectly legal tax minimisation that all Australian income earning individuals and businesses do (i.e. claim deductions)?

It is not about whether it is legal or not... where did that come from?

Perhaps I didn't make that point clear; SA with the highest proportion of wind turbines in the country also has the highest electricity prices, in fact on the edge of being the highest in the world. Not the consumer and not the environment.... exactly who is benefiting here? Why aren't they viable without taxpayer subsidies?Anyway, back on topic yes watch the downwind turbulence, probably don't aim at getting that close if you have the option.

Why isn't coal viable without taxpayer subsidies?113_im_with_stupid.gif.c7998083611453eb404ccd147fef8c5f.gif

  11. "A study by UBC Psychology Prof. Del Paulhus finds that[/url]narcissistic applicants are more successful in job interviews

than equally qualified candidates who act more modestly. The findings suggest that applicants from cultures that place greater emphasis on humility, including some Asian cultures, may have a harder time landing a job"

On a related topic Chinese employee tells me in China they would never tell you that you didn't get the job, really bad loss of face. They just don't get back to you. Similarly if you are casual and they stop contacting you / giving you work it apparently means you have been sacked. 013_thumb_down.gif.ec9b015e1f55d2c21de270e93cbe940b.gif
