  1. Although I never new Ross apart from this forum, I am tearing up watching the videos :( R.I.P mate.

How lucky was I Robbo? I jumped in at Marian airstrip near Mackay and we headed inland picking up what was the old inland ferry route used to take WW2 machines from South to North... visited the Birthplace of Qantas... overnighted at the airstrip where Nancy Bird started her commercial flying career... flew over the Dish... just to name a couple of the highlights.

  2. We aren't big on good reports. We don't carry black boxes and there is often a lack of "reliable " witnesses. With all due respect also Police are not trained with aviation matters, nor are Coroners..I think most are desirous of wanting to know, not just out of a ghoulish curiosity but to gain benefit from the knowledge of the circumstances, and how they might relate to their own operations. Nev

And this was something that I know Ross was passionate about. How ironic.

  3. Well for the first time on my ipad I fell victim to the accidental inapropriate tap of the funny icon..... I traced my steps (after removal). And found that when scrolling on the ipad most including me scroll from right hand side ( were icon are located) you need to scroll few times and it's very easily done.... How ever some jump the gun first at the accidental icon taper before finding out why an inapropriate icon was selected. ( seems very common not just on here)There is a solution! I urge Admin to make the icon Double tap so we ipad uses don't ACCIDENTALLY tap inapropriate icons .... Also if you find your self has an inapropriate like/funny ect... Send a Polite private message in the case ( like me) they are not even aware any icon was pushed :)

Have a safe and enjoyable Day.

    Oops!

(I reckon we just shouldn't take any of this too seriously...it is just the inter web thingy)

  4. That sounds just like Ross. He would enjoy looking down and watching our reactions. That is assuming he went up there, although I doubt that he will get the 20 virgins because ha wasn't of the correct religion.

I reckon he would prefer them well versed in the ways of the karma sutra...

  5. Perhaps we should be deliberately practing stopped fans towards trees and other obstacles, so that if the time ever comes at least we will be ready to pick gaps and have the courage to crash it in to softer folliage, non trunks etc, rather than stall and spin elsewhere, trying to avoid where we may need to go by necessity...If anything it might force us to quickly identify potential survivable gaps and make better choices when required in split seconds.

Perhaps we should just fit ballistic chutes to all aircraft...?

  6. It's as simple as this IMO.

I've heard all sorts of experienced pilots tell me about the time they safely landed an aircraft back on the strip after coming up against problems in the air...and I now know all sorts of experienced pilots who are dead. The one thing they had in common... A SIMPLE BELIEF THAT IT WON'T HAPPEN TO ME TODAY. The same simple belief we all have.

  7. Apparently Ross was test flying a GA Lightwing...they have a smaller wing and are a little faster I believe. If my memory serves me Ross said they had some handling quirks that set them apart from the GR model. But regardless of any of that... this accident has all the hallmarks of pilot error. For some this is a hard thing to face when it is someone who commands the legendary stature amongst pilots that Ross did...but there it is. Personally I don't see it as an attack on a mate by talking about this... I think it would be a slap in the face if we weren't honest. Anyone can make a mistake.

True...it is early days yet...but the reported facts, as sparse as they are support this currently.

  8. A previous employee of RAA who is now an employee of CASA, once stated in a RAA magazine something to the effect that ALL AVIATION ACCIDENTS ARE PREVENTABLE IN SOME WAY SHAPE OR FORM .Once this tragic accident is thoroughly investigated by RAA & or CASA, let the so called experts with all their so called expert knowledge explain HOW THIS TRAGEDY COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED.

What the unfortunately deceased Pilot in this tragedy didn't know about aviation was not worth knowing whilst the so called aviation experts in RAA & CASA will now have to go back to the drawing board & come up with a better explanation than the one quoted earlier in this reply.

Ross was the second most experienced powered pilot I have flown with... and they are both now dead from crashes (not accidents) in the same circumstances.
