  6. Hi Geoff,Jab is RAA. Alice have a tower but no radar. Just phone them and get a prefered time to land, they are very helpful if you tell them that you are new to the area. In any case report on tower freq 45 miles out with height and heading, they will then advise what to do from then on, just make sure that you repeat all instructions. You will need to have a Visual Teminal Chart. It's a good idea to highlight the various waypoints on the VTC on your track as they could ask you to hold over one of them. Fuel and tie down area no problems, ask for directions when clear of runways. Must have ASIC. All info in the ERSA. I did enquire about fuel at Bond Springs, no luck and was told no problems to land at Alice as it's a remote area and only fuel available.

    Either way, I noticed that you came back through The Alice and would appreciate your advice on how difficult it is for an RAA aircraft to get into there for fuel? Do they still have a tower there?

  8. This issue of oil pressure sender failure has been mentioned a couple of times here in various threads.

     

     

     

    Mine is just how Jabiru fit it up, however it is interesting that in Dynon's instructions for their instruments they state that the sender should not be direct mounted to the engine, and should therefore be mounted remotely to get it away from engine vibrations.

     

     

     

    If mine plays up on the 3300 I'll be putting a flexible pressure line between the engine and the sender to try to solve this issue as identified here by others.

  9. I've been in discussion with Shell about the use of their single vs multigrade in a J3300 engine in our summer ambients of say 20 - 40 C.

     

     

     

    They are clear in their recommendation of 15W-50 for both our winter and summer and I post their reply below for the benefit of forum members. If you have any questions I suggest that you give Murray a call or post any further observations here:

G'day,Most visitors to Oz who wan to see as much of the place as possible no matter what the mode of transport usually land in Cairns and work their way south to Melbourne or visa versa. with the intention to fly you could venture in from the coast and see a bit more. way to many places to reccomend going to but try searching Daintree, Atherton Tablelands, Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, inland you can find some interesting towns like Mt Isa, Birdsville, Charleyville, Lightening Ridge and keep working down the map. Remember you miss quite a bit in between the towns if you fly. It may look empty and unpopulated but that not quite true even in the middle of woop woop.

    But if you do decide to just stay up in Qld, bring a 7 iron for the Cane Toads, some Glen 20 for the mildew, not to mention a few tickets to get into the Police Integrity Commission Inquiries. It's all great sport.

    One of my companies had an office in Atlanta, so I did it regularly a couple of time each year until about 4 or 5 years ago.

     

     

     

    I'm one who liked the LA to Sydney direct route ..... which involved getting to LA the cheapest way possible, then turn left after take-off and sit there for 14 hours and it is all over.

     

     

     

    United did it for me as their schedules, connections & prices usually worked out best back in those days.

     

     

     

    I'd recommend spring or fall and you can then have reasonable weather at most latitudes here.

     

     

     

    And if you have the right licences and a bit of time, investigate hiring & flying yourself around to really see what OZ is all about. When you preliminary plan that, just think of it as being like the US in dimensions, but with bugger all people and bigger deserts ... and no Rockies to cross. The plains are similar but smaller and not as much corn or as many twisters.

    Drifters and Thrusters are great when you are ill and have wind, as when you are out in the breeze it cools your brow and your .............

There is one other point I would make on this .... and that is that I do suspect that while a strobe in daylight may well be visibility challenged on a bright day (& under circumstances as described by 430 and bc), that strobe might also become increasingly bright and visible as an aircraft gets closer .... and closer .... and closer, perhaps particularly if the fabric of your machine is darkish.

     

     

     

    Just a thought as anything that makes you more see-able might encourage another closing aircraft to turn away just that little bit earlier, and you only need to have them miss you by a little bit to make it worthwhile.

     

     

     

    Strobes are certainly not "useless" in daylight in my view.

    Sorry Dennis. Did not answer your points 1 & 2.

     

     

     

    The Kuntzleman units are a single strobe on the tail that is their "Smart Strobe" which can run on 12 v battery power or direct from the alternator's AC lighting coil. Their dual strobe unit is 12 V powered only.

     

     

     

    Have a look for Kuntzleman's (That is definitely spelt with "K" and a "zleman") website.

    They are considerably brighter than my house alarm strobes.

     

     

     

    I can't hear any noise at all thru my radio but have flown other Jabirus that do hiss and fizz a bit. Care is needed on location of the strobe boxes and wiring and a good radio with suitable filters driving good coax is essential.

  15. I agree with the four thirty about a landing light, & I suggest that anyone who is interested should also have a look at Claus Grimm's solid state landing light flasher unit that makes them even more visible-er.

     

     

     

    Mine works great.

     

     

     

    As a matter of interest ... how much electrical load can be supported by the charging circuit of a 582? Do they make plenty of juice?

     

     

     

  16. I understand the point that J is making and there is no doubt that the basic strobes are not as bright as those on a 747 .... but neither is the cost.

     

    I have the usual tail strobe (on a Jabiru, not a trike) and also fitted them onto the wings with separate switching.

     

    They are valuable IMHO in a busy circuit or in dull conditions.

     

    Given the importance of visual sightings & the ultimate fallback for the blame game of "see-and-be-seen", I reckon it is worth the cost and effort to have them.

     

    As an example, on departure from Wagga at 1st light, the strobes are bright cause I can see them flashing on the ground, and it is "nice" to have them on when there are RPT's around.

    This has been discussed a couple of times here in the last 12 months or so and the 10 Ply Trellebords are the way to go in my humble.

     

     

     

    I have 'em and would recommend them, and all others that I know with them have had good results

    .... t'was the venerable Techman who convened a committee of the great and good in the RAA, with a mission to devise a way around Butters' new tax, and they came up with the catchy and simple to remember mnemonic "SWAFTSTTSONTFBAMAW" which as all aviators thereafter know, simply stands for "Stand well away from that twisted sharpish thing that spins out near the front bit and makes a wind", so the tax was avoided, but .....
