  1. what about the children, what about the children ..... oh the humanity!!!

What, thought Ian the Administrator? You mean that there are children and humanity out there in addition to my 2000 Forum members? This surely means that I can get my hands on lots more fiddies, so that I can enter my Millennium into the Red Bull Air Races and kick some serious tail of those pussies in their Extras etc.

    If only ................................

  2. So....... where are we up to with this one ??

    G'day Tarz.

The latest is as advised in post #29 and it is between Mick Poole and the BOM ... mostly the latter as I understand it. Hopefully they will do what was advised and the issue will be gone.

It has been a bit over a month since Mick sent his advice thru, and I'm not sure how long it takes a Gov't department with a moniker starting with "Bureau" to act. Maybe we should run a guessing comp while we wait.

  3. I agree with you about the speeds Brent and have been experimenting with them in mine recently.

If it squeaks up between 65 & 70 knots at the flair it makes a disproportionate difference to the float and then getting it pulled up.

I like 65 over the fence and 60 in the start of the flair where it seems to do nothing wrong and settles positively and nicely.

My existing dirt farm strip has a 2 degree downslope and I reckon that I am getting off in about 200 m or so (with 600 to go) but it's a bit hard to look sideways when you are concentrating on the lift-off, so I'll check it more accurately next time.

How have you been keeping? We should maybe meet up for a coffee in Wangaratta or Mangalore some time.

  4. .... and enough urine to refill Warragamba Dam, so that the Desalination Plant could then be cancelled, leading to the State Gov't volunteering to buy back and guarantee the lifetime operation of all regional and council airports, but what about the .....

  5. Jabs are NOT 400m strip machines.J

I think I recall hearing of someone operating a J230 off a 250 M farm strip, but it is one way on the side of a hill .............. and he doesn't get too many people dropping in.

I have been out with a dumpy today and it looks like I can cadge about 550 M with the last bit of one end up hill, so that looks like it might be workable if maybe restricted to one way ops for landing.

And a supplementary question ............ does anyone know whether you need a DA to build & operate a strip if it is actually part of an existing paddock?

As an additional matter of interest, this would be inside existing military Restricted Airspace and I spoke with CASA last week, who advised that if the military agree for a neighbour to operate within that space, then it will be OK, so will start discussions with the Army this week to hopefully progress that.

  6. Narrandera June 8th.

The local news says that a light aircraft got bent at Narrandera yesterday, but the pilot walked away.

Given the media accuracy out here, that probably means that a light pole got bent at Balranald, but does anyone know anything as there are some good blokes and forum members that operate over at YNAR.

Edit - Latest news this morning says it was a Saphire and the issue was X-wind.

  7. I haven't had a frontal labotomy, but, I do have a (half empty) bottle in front of me........:hittinghead:

..... and this demonstrates that while Big Pete certainly hasn't had a "full-frontal lobotomy", he has had a few "half bottle in front-a-me's", (not that there is anything wrong with that) which just goes to prove what a good bloke and great pilot he is, and ........

  8. Grass short strip

Further to the Ferret's post, I am looking at building a new short grass strip on the side of a hill up near my house, but it is a bit tight up there.

Does anyone have any firm practical experience on the realistic minimum length of grass that is needed for a J230 on both take-off and landing?

    Regards

You have certainly hit this forum with a vengeance and stuck it up some.

Just as a matter of interest, will you please advise whether you are a GA person or whether you have an RAA licence?

Do you have an abiding interest in Recreational Aviation or are you on this forum under other colours ... as your profile says that you don't have anything from any where? Yet your 2nd last post makes it appear that you might have a chip on both shoulders about warbirdies.

  10. HPD

I have mucked around with relatively "dangerous" sports since I was old enough to buy petrol, and thru numerous forms of car and motorcycle track and road racing I have put a number of my friends into survival positions while waiting for ambulances or choppers

A number did not survive ..... but in every case their wives or families have always wanted to know what happened almost immediately, and I know that I have been the same when those close to me have been injured.

When dealing with family and friends after a fatal or near fatal I have always started by saying that we can never to sure, but based on the little we know, here is what we think happened.

I have always thought that better than saying "wait for the coroner's and pathologist's report in 6 or 12 months", ..... and so did they.

But also see TOSG's related post in "Incidents and Accidents" where this is discussed further.

    Regards Geoff

  11. Thanks Ossie

These types of changes cause all sorts of grief for computer based flight planning programs ..... until you revert to the old code or get an updated version.

When the program didn't recognise YCFS I thought that Coffs airport might have been sold to a retirement home or palliatives care hospital developer.

    Regards Geoff

  12. Tony

I support discussion of accidents on this forum and because we often do so on the same day or shortly thereafter, it must necessarily almost always involve some degree of "speculation".

I have no trouble with that, but with the caveat that all posts must be WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF GOOD TASTE.

And I have always found that this has been maintained well here due to the sensible moderation of Ian and Slarti and others with that power.

As you rightly note, the recent Gold Coast accident involved a frenzy here from those that were trying to shut down any comment at all, using plainly false logic about emails to the families.

Accidents & fatalities are tragic, and painful for some that are personally involved, but that is why God and King James invented the word "Accident".

The RV6 in Vic is one I will always remember, and one of our members posted some aerial shots which I found to be a good factual indication of what happened ........... but this type of thing always needs to pass the TASTE TEST and if it meets that, then it is OK by mine.

And for the record, if I ever "GO IN" (as some of our forum members have done) feel free to discuss it as much as you like for as long as you like. It might help someone else not to make the same mistake.

    Regards Geoff

PS Some of your posts are longer than my whole attention span.

My 3300 does something similar although probably not to the extent that yours does.

Once the oil is warmish the pressure will rise as the revs rise until it drops off a little as it rises further, but it quickly stabilises and doesn't continue to drop.

I have always assumed that the drop was when the spring loaded pressure regulator/limiter opens, and mine then appears to sit at around 2.6 - 2.9 Kpa at cruise at 80C.

Is that similar to yours or is yours more extreme?

  14. So how do you forecast 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

On the other side of Macnoz's sign is a picture of a house with the roof removed and it says "Historically - a tornado has been thru" and "Predictively - There is a better than average chance of rain".

Ian ..... I suggest that your next port of call should be a PM to Danda or Friarpuck who can have a direct word to the bloke in the Weather Control Tower for you.

On the other hand, Weatherzone still predict it will be clear down there between 28 May and 5 June.

And you can obtain added insurance by organizing a Rec Flying Fly-In as far away from your joint as possible.

    Hope this helps.
