  1. just a few questions on these thru bolts' why do they continually break?

are they bolts or rod threaded at both ends? are they breaking at the bottom of the thread? from poor thread cut?

if they are rod with nuts both ends, are they being pulled up evenly from both ends or applying touque from just one side and stretching the rod unevenly.

are there any sharp edges holes on the cases or barrels that could put a small groove around the rod and start cracking

could the base of the cyl be too thin and flexing stressing the bolt. maybe longer bolt and cyl base spacer to move the load away from the end of the thread. and support the cyl base.

shock cooling from rapid throttle movement from quick decents. poor cool down after flight ect. maybe change material for the bolts, stainless maybe

From memory, a few of us asked the same questions here a year or so ago when these stud failures were reported by one or more of the forum members, and I don't think any reasonable answers or facts came to light. Perhaps in that case it was being reported 2nd or 3rd hand.

I would love to see a close up photo of the stud failure to determine the nature of the break.

I'll take it up with the engine guys while at the dinner during the Airshow in early July and post any fair dinkum answers here.

If BrentC comes up I'm sure that he will follow up on it too.

  2. Thanks Geoff, I'll go ahead as per your suggestion.Cheers,Garry

    Garry,

As previously advised, mine works great (and it is really interesting to watch what humidity and temp conditions cause the carb temp to get right down in the danger zone while taxiing) and you can gauge the approx location from the photo, but a couple of things to look out for are:

    1. The length of your probe. Mine just sits neatly in the hole and does not protrude very much at all into the throat/venturi of the carby. I wouldn't have liked mine to be much longer.

    2. Once you have a location you can gauge the thickness of the carby body and how your thread and probe will sit.

    3. The thread that will be tapped into the diecast type body of the carby needs to be treated with gentle love (in my opinion) and as you can see from the photo, I used silastic to help prevent it from coming undone .... as I wasn't willing to tighten it super tight.

    4. Any little air leak in this location isn't good, so the silastic helps there too.

Does your probe look similar to mine (I suspect that mine is actually a VDO that is used & supplied by Dynon)?

Let us know how yours turns out.

    Regards Geoff

Next time you have it out, will you please post the K&N model number back on here?

I am going, Neil. I went in 2007 and it was great.

Planning on heading up on the Thursday - Wagga/Moree/Bundaberg - to be at the airshow for Fri & Sat.

I plan to depart Sunday and head further up north & west ..... something like Moranbah/Longreach/Mt Isa/Adels Grove/Alice Springs/The Big Rock Thing/The Opal Joint/The Lake with all the water in it/Wilpena Pound/Broken Hill/Lake Mungo/Wagga.

Which way are you going up & what day?

    Best regards Geoff

PS Are you taking your pussy up, Ross, as I see that Gary is listed as an exhibitor?

  5. Has anyone looked at using one of the better quality after0-market specialist filters like a K&N or similar?

I wonder whether they offer any advantage other than being reusable?

  6. Engineering being evolutionary yes but after 15 years and still having the same issue they obviously need some hired help because at this rate we will be all flying electric hovercars before they get it right.

Sure there have been issues over the years, but things are FAR different now from what they were "15 years" ago.

This thread was labeled "Why do people dislike Jabirus" so isn't it asking for peoples opinions?

Brent has it spot on in my opinion. I have said elsewhere here that the biggest mistake J have made in recent times is to chase economy with that lean-burn kit. As a result, EGT temps were a little too high and the valves, seats and alloy heads became an issue ... IMHO.

    Regards Geoff

  7. If this is the so called progress out of 15years the 2045 model Jabiru should nearly be right:loopy:

    So Bla.

You have never flown one, or been in one, yet you feel the need to make 10 posts in this thread, 9 of which rubbish or snipe away at what is undoubtedly the most popular brand in the country and a family of engines that are exported worldwide and which are accepted into the VH register.

You, of course have every right to post here .... but 10 in the negative, with no experience, is a bit over the top, I reckon.

But you must be starting to run out of negatives, as the last 2 posts are almost identical.

And if you think that all engineering is not an evolutionary business, then you need to take some realism pills.

I assume that the XT912S/Tecnam P92 Echo that you own or rent is just perfect, and am so pleased for you.

    Kind regards Geoff

  8. ."Well, that's a nice state of affairs on a public forum" said Slartiabittofastforhisowngood

Who adjusted his Raybans, did a reasonable impersonation of a SASA Inspector Administrator, and asked "Have you pulled the head off yours (not that there is anything wrong with that), yet Tubb?"

"And if so, will you please post here one photo of the inside of the engine, and a second of the delicate cold-chisel marks around the outside?" added the slartiphartblaster. "While I go and take another couple of pics of the Cheetah, as there is 1 other mag, world-wide, that hasn't run one of my shots."

"I will" said Tubb "And here they are ........

  9. I'm about to connect a carbuettor ice sensor to the Bing carb on a Jabiru 3300 engine. The sensor supplied is about 4mm high, 3mm wide and 2mm thick (it looks like a FET transistor). The problem is: where and how is the sensor mounted on the Bing carb.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Garry

    Garry,

I have one in the Bing on my 3300, drilled and tapped into the carb body in the venturi area where the ice forms.

I just removed the carby, took it into town to a local machine shop and watched closely to be certain that they kept all swarf out of the guts of the carb. Took them about 10 minutes to put the right sized drill where I had it marked, then the right tap for my sensor (which is the carb temp sensor for a Dynon).

    Works great.

There is a photo in J230 @ YSWG and it should show up if you do a word search in that thread. If it doesn't, post back here and I'll try to post another photo.

    Regards Geoff

  10. Ian

I support the concept and, in principle, suggest that somewhere equidistant from Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide & Sydney would be a good start.

That is probably what the RA-Aus did to originally select Narromine, but if you then apply some sort of a factor for our forum members in WA & FNQ, you might end up with Broken Hill or Bourke, and the former location does appear to have 2 active clubs that put their weekly dates on our Events Calender ..... although the ASIC issue probably raises it's head there.

But as a suggestion for 2009, and having in mind that we should try to save you any & all unnecessary organisation hassles/work, I wonder if it might not work well to hold it in Cowra this year in conjunction with the SAAA Convention .... which I think is Sept 18 - 20 this year, so the date is close to your suggestion.

If the SAAA would be supportive, this would give our forum members access to the SAAA catering system, toilets and showers, camping area etc, plus ready made forums etc would be available as a sideline .... and I would hope that if our attending members made a modest contribution we could use these facilities, plus have separate parking/camping/BBQ & some events of our own, with the combined attendance adding to the SAAA Event, with maybe benefits to both groups.

I think a location different from the location of Natfly would be best, just for variation's sake, but I must admit that the Caravan Park and showers + the Aero Club facilities at YNAR are good.

And while the fuel touch-up might not apply at that time of the year, another possible disadvantage at Narromine in Oct is that gliding operations might be getting going in October if the season is early.

Just my 4 cents worth, and I hope this helps.

    Regards Geoff

  11. sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSCHEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Le CrappRat has been a bit busy lately, but while fighting off the recession, he has referred the above post to Dr James Ena MA, who is a forensic entomologist, and also to Dr Bill Doctor PhD who is an expert in H1N1.

Bill said that Tubb's post shows the typical traints of someone who is infected and who is also a carrier. "With regard to the Turbs, I am of the opinion that as for H1N1, he is1, he R1 and he forever will be 1" he said.

And after lengthy examination Jim Ena MA said " Tubb obviously has a bad case of the flu, which has caused him to substituted an "H" for an "R" and left off the word "YOU".

"Well, that's a nice state of affairs on a public forum" said ....................

    SERIOUS HEALTH WARNING

It is pleasing to note that Tubb and other responsible forum members have self quarantined themsleves from the NES while Victoria remains the epicentre (as our News bulletin desctibed it) of the Aussue H2N1 Oinker Flu outbreak.

Does this perhaps bring new relevance to the term "Mexico" for our southern brothers?

All northerners are advised to wear a face mask while accessing any posts made here by anyone from south of the Murray.

Will all Victorian contributors please post their body temperature (in degrees C using an approval rectal thermometer), and their GPS location (in degrees, minutes and seconds using an approved GPS) on a 2 hourly basis until the risk has passed, so that the rest of the members will be adequately protected ..... and can run away, if'n they get close.

But how will Mcjocklovacia get back to safety from Tasmania without the risk of infection? Can he perhaps overfly Victoria, as it is only a little joint?

My Aunt is feeling a bit crook out in the garden ..... but I am not sure that she should be putting the thermometer where she is.

  13. .....He totally forgot to lay down the law on this white with red drip paint job of an R22 because he was still in awe.......................

"My name is actually Eeee Awe" said the Qld equivalent to the Donkey in Shrek "And those CASA blokes have got to stop that."

So the conclusion to the Tarctic Chapter, dear reader(s) is that Ahlow2centsworth and Binglocks landed their finely tuned aircraft in SE Tassy, about 50 kms down from Hobart and said "Geeez it's cold. What's the difference between here and the Tarctic?"

"The Wrest Point Casino" came the chorus from the cheap seats.

"Can I come out from under the dash?" whispered Nanna.

"No" said Tubb "You stay there. keep doing what you were doing, and ..............

  14. Went for a wonder around Caboolture airfield today, and stubled accross a open hanger with the Boomerang being restored sitting in it. Apparently its a week away from flight tests, engine has been run (by the looks of the leaking oil). Found out a little about it to, didnt realise it was being rebuilt as a two seater...Didnt even know there ever was a two seater, but apparently the airforce modified one airframe to a two seater. So this guy will be the 2nd two seat Boomerang ever. I have to say the build quailty is amazing, it looks like a new aircraft with clearly no expense spared. Chatted to the engineers about the second seat, appartently not alot of structual modification or strengthening was needed. But there obviously was not alot of documentation considering only one other has ever been built!

Wouldn't it be good if it could be ready to make an appearance at the Wide Bay Airshow next month!!!!!!

    Regards Geoff

  15. You are doing well Alberto.

My Portugese is limited to "obrigardo" and "caipirinha" ..... and "do you want to stay the night?"

And I assume that you are aware that Brazil contains some or all of the most beautiful women on this earth. You are a lucky man to have that .... AND a J250.

I spent some time down in Porto Alegre, and in the mines around there ... and loved it. Is that down near where you are?

    Regards Geoff

  16. Welcome Alberto.

I spent some time working in Brazil in the late 1980's, and have a J230 that I built a couple of years ago.

    Hope you enjoy this forum.

  17. ..........but being a typical Queenslanda, I can't find them........!049_sad.gif.cfa4f274d7bd070bd6a24b809e8799ba.gif.......................

NEWSFLASH ..... there is a sick humpback in the Broadwater in SW Qld this morning and authorities are concerned for it's safety & health.

What the ABC news has suppressed is that there is evidence of marks on it's back which fit the dimensions of the skids from an R22, it's blow-hole (not that there is anything wrong with that) is full of seagull feathers, and it had a ratchet tie-down hanging from one eye socket.

Qld police are investigating (bit of an oxymoron there) the fact that the tiedown has been traced to a sale at Bunntings at Dalby.

A senior police spokesperson said "We think ............

  18. P200

I reckon it is "tall poppy syndrome" that drives many of the knockers.

Heaps of pilots have voted with their cheque books and most can't get the smiles off their faces ....... and the success of the aircraft seems to then attract knockers.

I have a 230 and I chose it as the best for the job that I needed it to do .... and I still don't know any alternative with heaps of space and luggage capacity that will cruise at 120 knots with up to 6 hours range ......... and which is as strong and proven as the 230, with a known ability to routinely use a farm strip.

If anyone knows one, please let me know.

    Regards Geoff

Geez Motza .... looks like we agree on something else. Bit of a worry ... eh?

  19. I did wonder why he brought product 'glossies' and a sample with him when I invited him to come for a blat in the tin can.

They'd be good little units to set up in hangars to see who's stuffing around with aircraft in the owners absence.....or beside a certain motel's coke machine to see who's kicking the carp out of it.

No carp anywhere near our joint. I'll PM ya, Steve, as they look good and useful.

Sorry to sidetrack this thread Slarti.

  20. Actually that was a little trick to deter the authority's.... It was originally white! but seeing that I accidently nicked it from Dalby, I thought I should do something to make it not so obvious...! so I found a nice flock of sea gull, and flew through the middle.....................

    ....... like a typical Queenslander.

Not only does he propose using a pod of whales to transport the R22 back to Oz, by tying it down with the hooks into their eyes, he is also abusing whales by giving Willy a workout on a regular basis, and now he is sacrificing seagulls as a Robbo disguise. But Tomo the Yobo Homo also admits to a splash of pleasure (shown by a smirk and a teensy weensy smile) when he wound the torque up to 90% as he approached the flock of gulls and resprayed the Robbo.

    THWACK.

"Pinch my chips, will ya, when Mum took me to the beach back in 2005 " he yelled as it snowed gull-down over the Tarctic.

Then he smirked, smiled, freed Willy and yelled "That was a buzz. Now where is a hump-back and where are my ratchet tie-downs? ................
