Strawberry growers, Old K? Yes, the stories we read, they're doing it tough. But in the wanton destruction of ripe strawberry crops, I see a failure to address the current situation, and little attempt to find a way to utilise the fruit.
Many a grower has had to re-adjust their plans to find a different way to process and sell their fruit, when their normal market area collapsed. There must be some options available to use the fruit to produce a strawberry product in a different form.
A friend used to grow about 20 Ha of (irrigated) onions in the late 1970's. But onion prices were notoriously extreme in that era, and when time came to harvest them, the price he was offered was less than the price of production - so, he simply ploughed them all in, rather than pay out more to harvest them. Seemed like total stupidity to me, particularly when onions will store for an extended period under the right storage conditions.
It's a game of averages; like the onion grower the variations can be huge. In a different area a Canola grower was doing a TV interview and was about to take off a bumper crop just as canola prices were going through the roof, so it cuts both ways. In some areas, like the Mallee, they work on a 5 year budget where the bumper crops which coincide with peak prices are averaged against the poor crops and low prices.

Leave Melbourne, guys and come to Edenhope. No traffic on a normal day.
I would appreciate some allies in trying to reinstate the old E-W runway. The N-S runway is 1000m of good bitumen.
Are you talking about the slightly diagonal line at the northern end.
A lot would depend on who owned the paddocks, but fire protection would be a good reason, particularly for fires pushed by strong westerlies.

Valid for someone flying a heavy plane, not so much with a 600kg MTOW one.
A PIC skills of negotiation may be called upon, at some stage 🙂
There's no need for this to go round and round with endless Sociology theories that just confuse people. We know what is required and we know why.

The best I could do would be to work out a flight plan of all air strips I may possibly need to use. Look them up here
http://www.flightace.com/airstrip.htm
Phone them up and ask for provisional landing permission, if needed.
At least, even IF I had to land at an alternate without permission, I could at least demonstrated I had tried my best to cover my flight, particularly IF the strip was not listed in the guide?
For local flights that would be good.
Before a cross country flight you would do the same exercise for alternate airstrips and plan your Pbreaks which will usually be less than aircraft endurance. That then goes into your Flight Plan. You can then phone them en route, pick another one etc.

A formation of 3 aircraft turned over Emerald Vic today just before 1400.
It is good that this is critical work continuing during lockdown.Of course apart from electronic tracking, Vicpol can call on radar records very easily, and put together multiple offences from the records.

Regardless of politics, something (and more) has to be done. From my memory, half of Melbourne population lives on either side of Springvale Road, which is ~15km East from the city. Melbourne is (un)fortunately city-centric, every freeway, every train line goes into the city. That puts a lot of pressure on infrastructure causing everyday's congestions. Politics is obviously playing a key role in planning as for example two big North-South highways (Eastlink and Sth Gippsland Hwy) don't have east-bound exits towards Traralgon at intersections with Monash Fwy?!
They weren't political SEITA was the road authority which designed the freeway system. Where they intersected major CBDs, if they built access roads at every major infrastructure they would be stop/start infrastructure roads and not freeways so they designed in conjunction with the LGAs (Councils) In the two cases you mention Eastlink Google Earth is showing a southbound lane to Monash Fwy, and South Gippsland Highway intersects with Princes Highway which flows into the extension of the Monash - the Gippsland Freeway.
1 hour ago, Bosi72 said:I think the long term solution is to "spread" the city, to build 3, 4 CBDs, eg. each in Ringwood, Dandenong, Frankston (with ~10 skyscrapers) similar to what they are doing in Box Hill. Then connect cbd's with the outer train loop.
An airport on East side close to new cbd's is inevitable..
That was the thinking in the 1970s, but Australian manufacturing has pretty much died out and you will pick up current thinking from these documents which are looking outwards a lot further based on the much faster population explosion and other current factors.

What is a planner anyway. Someone who change their mind every 3 - 5 years. We already have a second international airport in Avalon situated between our two biggest cities in vic. Some planner didn't think we needed it and sold it on. The eastern area can easily be serviced by commuter shuttle from Traralgon.
Avalon was used in the past as a RAAF Military Base which ended about the time when the Sabres were replaced and the strategy was to move to Williamtown/Qld to be closer to obvious threats.
Then it was contracted for Pilot training on Vickers Viscounts, then after that success contracted to Qantas for 747 pilot training.
It's been ideal for big airshows because of the quiet traffic.
Then a few people, including Linfox have operated interstate/overseas flights as an alternative to travelling to Tullamarine.
The Planning process for many decades has reserved the area of rural land for the second major Airport for Melbourne; this current process is part of moving that intention forward.
One of the reasons for the location in the east is that Melbourne has an East-West traffic problem which slows access to Tullarmarine which gets worse the further you are for Tullamarine.

YKWR will also affect Tooradin, Tyabb, Drouin. The class C will be miles everywhere with narrow vfr LL1500 corridors. No more close by Training areas, nor Aerobatics for all schools including Moorabbin unless moved further south over Phillip island or north over Lilydale, but there will be lots of fuel burning to get to get to closest class G where LL3500.
On the other side the benefits will be multiple for economy, jobs, passengers, but probably not so for general aviation. I used to be supporter of new airport on the eastern side, but not sure if I am anymore (yeah selfish:). Probably time to think about own farm with airstrip or airpark.
Some good points there; you can either email in a submission, or I think you may be an online submission somewhere on the documents.

A lot of people are getting confused over the reasons for this, and why it is a CAAP, not a CAR
It is not whether the landowner will be happy or upset if you land without his permission.
It is not about landing in an emergency, which means you will have given a PAN or MAYDAY call.
(It's certainly about the dodgy Pstop "emergencies" some people have suggested)
It applies to runways and paddocks
It's about who is responsible when things go wrong, and primarily you are, whether it's a biosecurity breach which causes stock/product outbreaks and losses, or a drain which is grassed over, or a strip which might be unsafe, or an event which is happening, the aircraft damaged, insurance refused, passengers injured or killed etc.
If one of these occurs, your defence might well be that "Under CAAP 22-1 (1) I contacted the owner and was given permission to land" plus any mitigating factors.

Good point! An often-overlooked dimension to landing control. I had mobs of problems with idle revs until a LAME showed me how to adjust the idle screw.
800 rpm is now a reliable idle speed, but some have reported it as low as 350 rpm on Jab engines with EFI.
I had major problems stopping my early single-disk Ducati until I replaced the standard master cylinder (which I assume had been designed for a dual-disk setup) with a smaller-diameter one off a Honda 500.
Bicycle shops might be a good source of very light-weight hi-tech hydraulic brakes.

Yeah but OT i know WA very well as i have driven trucks all over the state and lived in Kunnanara and Broome and perth and esperance and i,ll tell ya mate in WA eastern state people just do not realise how much of lots and lots of no people just bloody bush and cows. lol so social distancing in WA is not a problem because of the lots and lots of nothing....
0.89 people per kilometerPopulation Density of Western AustraliaWestern Australia's density is 0.89 people per kilometer, which is ranking 2nd least populated state in Australia after Northern Territory. WA is one of the least densely populated states in the world. i think more then a kilometer per person is pretty good social distancing,,,,,,,lolYou are not understanding how Covid spreads
People congregate in cities and towns, and that's where the high volume of infections will be.
There can be low volume infections wherever anyone travels and gets within infection distance of anyone else - so every corner of the State.
It is not an averaging equation, so not related to the area of a State or country.
A lot of people have been picking up and using statistics then comparing linear prgressions vs exponential progressions and posting figures which are not relevant to the number of deaths from Covid.

Florida has never had lockdown or closed shops factories, and never had a mask mandate nor vaccine requirements. Now look at the economy of the state ,,15th largest in the world and as you can see from my graph in my previous post the infection and death rate is declining very very fast with herd immunity.https://www.flchamber.com/floridas-economy-grows-to-15th-largest-in-the-world-up-from-17th/
Here's the situation in Florida tonight, direct from Johns Hopkins University of Medicine:
CASES DEATHS POPULATION
Florida 3,452,700 48,772 21.48 million Death trend is the bottom line on the graph
Australia 73,603 1,091 25.36 million

Against, is the data we get peer reviewed? Are many of the sources credible?
The public don’t have a clue, we just take what is published on face value and work it out from there.
No other choices……
If you are referring to the influenza data above, it's not a thesis, its not modelling, so while "peer review" might seem important it has no bearing whatsoever on a simple set of numbers published by the Commonwealth Department of Health.

As you and everyone else can see by this graph that a large proportion of the listed covid deaths during 2020/2021 are misslabled as covid and are actually influenza deaths that we get every year. Now any sane person can see that just by looking at the death rates for influenza dropped from 902 to 36?????????> somethings not right!!!!!!
So now the Commonwealth Department of Health is cooking the books?
I couldn't find the chart I was looking for but it shows all flu deaths for about 40 years, and the big numbers only occur now and again. The 2020 figures are not unusual and last year we were wearing masks for a lot of the year.
