  1. Thanks. ITMT I did some digging and have kind of resolved the question. Thanks for the info. Is this part of ground affect?
  2. I am probably going to regret asking, but here goes: A long time ago there was a question posed about a truck carrying pigeons inside. The gross weight is 5 tons. If all the pigeons fly - inside the truck's area - does it (the truck) weight any less? (Don't answer that yet) Then there is the story I heard a long time ago about falling objects. I don't remember the specifics, but it was something like: A rock is sitting on the ground. It weighs 2 kg. You pick it up and drop it. As it is falling how much pressure is on the ground below it? Supposedly 2 kg because of the pressure below the rock. (Beats me.) And there is a question about hovercraft and how much weight do they have (on the ground) when "flying" compared to when they are just sitting there engines off. Just recently I've seen this youtube on "How do plane fly" - which is not arching back to a SHELL movie from decades ago. This new one So what is happening with all the "weight"? I know weight is a concept - controlled by gravity - and it should be MASS that is measured. I'm not the sharpest tool so maybe don't use too many long words. I really don't like it when I get bored and ask hard questions that are well above my knowledge. So now my little brain is curious about what is going on with that sort of thing.
  3. And so in the bigger scheme of things: No one knows REAL information on what happened? "we" (the other person and I) - as stated - are in Ashfield. That is under DEPARTING traffic. Inbound. NEVER! Well, if there is inbound traffic at 3000 feet at Ashfield there are bigger things happening. Every morning at 06:15 (I think it is) a A380 takes off overhead. Going to Dubai. It is LOW AND HEAVY. Yes a lot quieter than the older 747's from the 80's. The reported plane was low and noisy. Any emergency plane would be way up by the time it gets over us. As no one can help: I will "write it off as not worth pursuing any further."
  4. If you thinks SYDNEY is THE gateway to Australia I would say there is/are other things needing attention here.
  5. I live in Ashfield and was talking to someone today and they mentioned - in passing - that they heard a plane flying over this morning at 04:30. Isn't that a bit too early?
  6. (I'm only saying.) I guess sometimes people make themselves too important and forget the job.
  7. I guess with all this new information: Better decisions are made. For the greater good of all.
  8. But I think sfGnome did specify UNLESS IT IS IMPORTANT..... (And ok, the conversation has kind of covered that since then)
  9. Yeah, it is sad. Radio calls should be listened to seriously. Isn't there a rule that landing aircraft have priority over ones taking off? Things I "see" wrong with what I've heard/seen. "Blind spots" - although the one landing may not have seen the one taking off, the one taking off should have seen the one landing. Looking up to a blue sky with a big black object in/on it. The "Tap on the shoulder warning". I'm skeptical. Sorry. Fair enough "they" may have seen the other helicopter and were trying to alert the pilot. But there should have been clear rules on WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE ANOTHER HELICOPTER. Yeah, ok, shaking the $hit out of the pilot also wouldn't be a good idea, but that "tap" looked more like a "Hey, can you ......." type rather than a "Huston we have a problem" tap.
  10. They called it by it's correct name and didn't say the C word! (Cessna) 🤪

  11. So was it a C-130? I don't have enough info to allow me to *JISS* is. (Just Is, Size Shape)
  12. Ok. I just don't get to see many, and I live close enough to see most departures on RWY 34 L. (And maybe because they are MIL SPEC) why didn't it show on Flight Tracker/Radar?
  13. As I mentioned at the start I can't see the original clip. (Such is life) Where/how do I unsubscribe from this topic? Its a bit pointless getting reply notifications Found it! Sorry.
  14. I saw it and checked "Flight radar" but it was not shown. 😞 4 prop high wing Military? C130? Departing YSSY West bound.
  15. 😞 facebook. I've blocked that from my network.
  16. I would hope you also would have wire cutters at the top of the vertical stab' also!
  17. Yes, that is a shocking case of poor CRM. Luckily nothing bad happened.
  18. Yes, if I read every word of every post I will see what I am about to ask. Sorry I am really having a bad time parsing things. Sticking to android, what are the apps for flight planning?
  19. That reminds me of another scenario where I am kind of glad we got through it. "Weekend fly to Narromine" from up near Caloundra." Got down to .... Walcha. See the relo's. Got to their house and it started PISSING DOWN! Had to stay the night. Next day the plane was saturated - inside - and we pressed on to Narromine. Maps/charts pretty well a write off. (As was most paper work.) The radio was kaput and it was a real mess. Won't be flying with that person again either.
  20. Sometimes. I already know the car's endurance and so if it is to a known place and I know how far it is, the fuel calculations are sort of automatic. But I shall mention something on that shortly. I don't do much country driving so I don't worry too much on the weather. But once I was "helping" someone drive their "petrol guzzler" from Sydney to Melbourne towing a heavy trailer. I got to do the second part after.... Gundagai. We stopped there and had "lunch", filled up and that was that. We're driving along and I'm doing on, but there is no "flight plan" in the GPS - other than "this is where you are". I glanced at the petrol gauge and noticed fuel was getting scarce. LUCKILY! We pulled over, unhitched the trailer - and I stayed with it - and the car was driven back a few K's to fill up. I was annoyed no end that I was driving a car with no knowledge of how far it could go and wasn't told where/when to expect the next petrol station. I won't be making that mistake again. Not travelling with that person any more. But it was an interesting experience to say the least. WATCH THE FUEL!
  21. Wow, this is overwhelming.... Seems I may not be making any XC flights for a while. (Though I haven't flown for about 3 years.) 😞
  22. > My own Excel Navlog That is a blank one which you then fill out with the new/up to date information - yes?
  23. Yeah, fair enough. I just wasn't sure what you meant. I have a GPS that I use and with which I am happy. But you mentioning the importance of papers, I was once flying and 20 minutes into the flight, the battery in the GPS gave out. No big... I used the paper plan I had and kept flying.
  24. (ARGH! trying to cut your text to paste here is like herding cats!) Yeah, you are right... I could just scribble down on the paper what I am shown. > But then you have every possible chart always up to date (could even be cheaper in the long run). Which way sorry? Having the "Ipad" or maps? (given there are ongoing costs with the tablet of data costs)
  25. Wow, I opened a can of worm here. Yeah, ok replying as I remember them: Yes, silly as in the weather forecast will/could change. I am not an apple person. I'm android. And yes I know there are apps for that too. But that (in the bigger picture) is not congruent with what I was told. You need a PAPER flight plan. None of those give you that. I've just bought myself a newer phone (from an old S5) and it does have more "grunt" and all that. But the screen size is not the required 10 inches - if I remember correctly. I don't mind doing as suggested and doing it both ways to start with, but that doesn't answer the question about the legalities of not having a paper plan at the end of the day.
