  1. I'm not sure how strong the rotor head of a gyro is but he's putting it under a lot of strain.
  2. Hi Picrway! She looks really good. Kit or plans building? Don't know if you need/want a mould for the cowling, but if you do, I dropped one back to Andrew at Midlands Flying School a couple of weeks ago. I don't reckon he'd have given it back to the owner yet. If you want his details just PM me. Yours may be a little different because of the bed mount, is the muffler going under that or somewhere else? Have you sourced the cooling system bits yet? I haven't yet ordered the 912 radiator or hoses, reading with interest what other people are using as hoses. Just realised I asked a lot of questions. Excited to see another 701 in Tassie I guess!

  4. Not only could I not handle all that, I couldn't handle the running costs, the maintenance costs, the storage costs... jeez even the fuel for a flight would require remortgaging, these days.

  6. Bloody dangerous to fly. If you make it through the flight without the very volatile fuels exploding or eating their way through the fuel lines, you then have to belly land it at 290km/h!!

  8. I like the way you think. Solar panel on the roof charging your plane. In the morning wheel it out, check controls are free and correct, and off you go. An hour some days would be fantastic - if you don't want to go cross country then it'd be ample.
  9. Obviously a couple of different variations of the type - check out the difference in tail in picture 3, which features an all-flying tail exactly like the 701, compared to the fat-ass fin and rudder of the other 3 pics. Also full flaperons rather than the internal flaps/ailerons of the others.

  11. She's a beauty for sure, but MTOW is fairly low at 472.5kg. If it takes 70L of fuel that's around 50kg, leaves only 125kg for pilot, passenger and luggage. Not sure I can fit passenger and luggage in 25kg!

  13. I was wondering why he kept the prop spinning at the pre takeoff checks. It's not like he has to wait for the oil temp to rise or check the magneto drop.
  14. I'm sorry, Russia invades Ukraine and somehow it's America's fault?? The USA has done some godawful things in the past but I don't think you can lay this one at their door. As for getting a balanced point of view - that's kind of like saying we should give equal weight to the medical opinions of anti-vaxxers. Look at the results so far. Cities shelled and bombarded. Thousands of civilians dead. Mass graves. Bodies with signs of torture. Remind me again of how many of those are Russian civilians in Russia?
  15. I've just finished reading "Liftoff" - the SpaceX story. Good read actually. But they've put a heap of crap up there all by themselves, imagine how much is going up from every other bugger launching stuff.

  18. Cowl is on, held with dzus. I did the "Bob's check pilot" test and yanked side to side on the cowl, it's solid and just moved the whole plane.

  21. Hi Derek, I'm interested in which bit of the plans you found erroneous. I picked up a 20mm difference in where the plans showed the slat holder slots to be and where they actually should be, but that's the only thing. (So far - still have to do the struts and mount the wings!)
  22. It goes outside, Bob. It's a bit strange in that the upper cowl actually goes inside the lower one, but it just fits better that way. Pleased that the dzus are nice and tight on the 2 layers of cowl, so I guess I'll have to pack out the springs for the ones that go on to the aluminium.
  23. I've now got 10 out of the 19 DZUS installed - 4 each side and one each side of the prop hole.
  24. At 540kph I can't see it dodging sailboats. As long as the mast is under 10m they should be fine...
