"Carving an appropriate prop for said engine "
That's been missed by "spellcheck
And who trains a single seat home-build pilot, Then New pilot has to fly, an unflown, very short coupled aircraft.

"If you want really good fuel economy I’d say modern automotive have it pretty much figured out"
Way back in the sixties, We were trying to better 30 MPG (10 Lp100 Kmes).
My 4 litre V6 Pajero gets the same12 L p Kms as my 2.8 litre 4 pot turbo diesel Delica, Not great economy for a modern engine!.

I "Dabble a little" Have No qualifications,
"I would like to see owners who had completed a proper training course allowed to do their own annuals."
So, who will train me to cut a crankcase in half to build a 1/2 VW motor, Plus calving an appropriate prop for said prop after "lofting the design" on the floor, to build electronic bit & pieces, welding, painting and all the rest "skills" required
to maintain personal cars boats house, And the proverbial home built aircraft. (I'm a wannabe mechanic, from before Certificates were mandatory.

"ultralight aeroplanes (defined by weight and stall speed) that are administered by a recreational aviation administration organisation."
Were in "part 103 is the "wing-loading" rule, That stopped 16 builder's from obtaining there dream of flying. In 95 10 category.

15 in the A,T,C.
About 1957, cousin went on to get license, I was told "will never be a pilot" & still not succeeded.
BUT I'm not dead yet!,
egmwa: Lots By RPT, and if any " GOOD LUCK" to them.

"I wonder why the HKS 700e has not been more successful?"
Valve guide problems, had a big recall I believe, something like, return old motor & get a new replacement.
then it all went quiet
Friend bought one for his Hummel-Bird, after he had second thoughts on his home built 1/2 VW.

Thanks Bruce
I did have a look at the layout of the small hp/ light weight engines, & came to the conclusion the 1/2 VW @ 85bls/ 36kgs, was well developed plus a few manufacturer's, were putting out parts to supplement the build.
Now it's a high spec component supplier's with high prices to match. Two plug heads & Nikosil cylinders on an old VW do's seem overkill.

Find a good engine cheap!.
Take a hacksaw to a four cylinder VW motor, and have 30 hp two pot motor, lots of people have done it, 1\2 VW :
What airframe?, Slow draggy type high wing "PUP"
Sleek low wing all metal."HUMMEL"
And composite ? : Swan Aeroplane | Modern Wings / with a 30hp motor, not many.

"We're doing a photoshoot next Saturday afternoon 10th February approximately 5pm. We're taking up 6 aircraft. Looking to fill the seats and offer a scenic flight for those who've never seen Sydney from the air before.
Approximately 45-60 minute flights"
has anyone information on this event

FLAPERONS
Not all aircraft have them.

"Most of them just seem to like to rivet it all together then paint the outside",
This is what most kit & plan designer's tell us to do. (maybe not expected to last very long,(new pilot+new aircraft)).
"and they can have good longevity if properly built and cared for, but it is difficult to work with in the homebuilder environment."
The aircraft left to Rot at Ybud, Is factory made, and has not lasted as long as expected.

Mick
I spoke the son of the owner who said they have plans for the aircraft.
His Mum & Dad are both very well known doctors in Perth.
I hope they know about the aircraft.

You want paper-work.
Worked at a firm making Hospital products. Five copy's of all paper-work for every-thing produced, And hast to be kept for many many years.
Every-thing with dotted eyes & crossed tee's, or YOUR FIRED!.
In a refinery only two copy's required, one for self one for management.

"I would like to see "work for the dole" types arriving the farm complete with OHS training including the training of how to politely refuse to do something dangerous".
My son in-law was a skilled worker. The council decided to take over his employer.
But not the work crew, Then said council invokes "work for the dole scheme and pays them $25 on top of their dole money to employ a full workforce WITHOUT protective equipment as they should have their old stuff to use.
Never trust any employer,

"Because fuel contains a certain amount of energy, and you can't get more energy than that what's in it"
Lace it with oxygen, & it gets a much bigger bang, how-ever it'll take the head clean off very quickly.
RON 180 perhaps?
I heard a English "Commer" two-stroke diesel was run on OLD 130ron avgas in the fifties, did what they wanted.
Big SHAME on Chrysler motors for dumping what is a world beater engine, "the highest power density and best high speed diesel engines in the world during that era in the form of the Rootes TS3 and TS4"
And these motor's are still running in original form, in Argentina's fishing fleet.
