    No….The Waiex was a decade ago. It was insured with QBE via SAAA because it was VH- reg. The current RA-Aus reg plane is via InsuranceHouse. Until a claim is made you’ll never know if your insurer is any good.

    Who you are insured with? InsuranceHouse. Are you as happy as can be ? Yes, with the caveat that having insured a number of aircraft for around 12 years I’ve never made a claim. Would you recommend them? Yes, subject to the above caveat. Any that you would not recommend? QBE via SAAA. The turf wars between SAAA and RA-Aus meant that despite being a SAAA member for >12 years, being a >500h GA pilot with numerous ratings and endorsements and building via the SAAA’s process of TC inspections using their risk radar, they would not insure my latest build because I chose to register it with RA-Aus. (I’m no longer a SAAA member.)

    Despite the world tensions and gloom, there’s so much to be thankful for living in Oz. So here’s a bunch of pics from this morning’s jaunt around Moreton Bay in our RANS S-20 Raven. Hope they bring you some joy.

    No sorry, don’t recall but I’ve used them on #10 gauge pan head St/steel screws to secure my spinner to its backing plate. (The airplane is hangared an hour from here)

    There will be plenty left for you to do Mark….As with most (all?) kits, the time to build is typically 2 to 3 times longer than that claimed by the supplier. Put another way, if you believe the supplier’s build time estimate, then you’ll likely believe their claimed empty weight too. Got to go now, there’s someone at the door offering to sell me a bridge in Sydney harbour and an island south of Victoria for a price to cheap to refuse.

    I’ll jump in to answer, as a multiple RANS 141 wing builder, on Mark’s behalf. The wing surface geometry dictates that it won’t be perfectly concentric once the tank stand is installed….This is because the forward edge of the tank stand is around 10mm higher than the aft edge. This aspect, combined with the camber (curve) of the upper wing surface (as compared to the flat surface of the filler flange) means that once everything is tightened up, there is a minor amount of stretching of the scupper seal. Reference to the pics below….Lower edge of photos are forward. Scupper is concentric prior to installation of tank stand (and filler flange) Scupper is marginally eccentric due to stretching induced by tank stand. The eccentricity is very minor and will only be observed by the crew of low flying airliners.

    It makes no sense whatsoever to spend a single cent more on (or wait a day longer for) a proven aero engine, until the very instant the one you saved $10,000 to acquire (or waited 6 months less for) begins to falter…. ….The bitterness of dubious quality/reliability lingers long after the sweetness of low price/short lead-time is forgotten. (With apologies to Benjamin Franklin) Sermon over.

    Maybe it’s unique to me, but of all the “RA-Aus” pilots I know (14 come to mind, including myself) all but two are current or former GA, ATP or airforce pilots.
