  1. good on ya Ian so where you doing your BFR?

Just before all this started, a board member in a different State offered to take me for it and I was going to that State for a meeting anyway so it was going to work out really well and financially viable...but now it would mean making a special trip so everything is thrown open again...it is also delayed further as well because my son Lachlan has really been looking forward to Ausfly so I can't start anything till after that now as well, I wanted to do a couple of days to really make sure I covered everything after a lengthy duration away from it and not just a stock standard BFR (have to do Human Factors as well)...this means if I were to travel somewhere it would have to be after AusFly

  2. I will openly say that I have no idea what untoward behaviour I am suppose to have undertaken at NatFly 2010, hence why the RAAus was asked for evidence to substantiate Steve Runciman's claims in his letter and 2011 however I will say that if as an example, the CEO a day before Xmas cancels ALL junior Members and stops them from flying, without the Board knowing, then 2 weeks later lets them start flying again, retracting what was previously said, only then to later stop them from flying again...I am sure you, as a member, would like to say to the CEO of any institution that when accosted by him that he is an F'n idiot to his face...my personal opinion only!

  3. Hi All

I think you all should be aware of what happened.

    1. Here is the first letter from Steve Runciman:

    2. Here is my Solicitors reply...the letter and email (note: to the RAAus Secretary and NOT Steve Runciman personally as he requested):

    Dear Secretary

Please find enclosed a copy of a letter mailed to the office last week on behalf of our client Mr Ian Baker.

Mr Baker allowed his pilot certificate to lapse some time ago because of health issues he was experiencing at the time. In our view, this was a sensible and highly responsible action taken by him and demonstrative of his careful and safety-conscious approach to his sport. He has now been cleared to fly again by his doctor and wishes to renew his certificate.

He has been somewhat alarmed by the communication he recently received from the President indicating that his “fitness” to be a member was under review and his membership placed on hold pending same. As you will see from the contents of our letter, we are now quite concerned that the President, and no doubt the CEO, have taken this unilateral action against Mr Baker for what appear to us to be personal reasons rather than being based in any real concern for the reputation of RAAus as a whole.

We strongly suggest that the Board consider the appropriateness of the subject action and the perception of bias it immediately raises. We expect that our client’s membership and pilot certificate will be granted without any undue delay and indicate that we are instructed to seek necessary legal recourse should this not occur.

    Your Faithfully

Please make up your own mind on what may be going on here

  4. Choices 3 and 4 of the poll is to join ALL recreational aviation bodies, this means RAAus, HGFA, SAAA, Rotorcraft, Soaring etc into one big single governing body or have 2 big governing bodies with both covering all forms of recreational aviation each.

My personal choice is Option 4, that being combine ALL recreational aviation groups together and have 2 bodies both coving all forms of recreational aviation...why 2, very simple, at the moment in my opinion is that there is so much that is not getting done in the industry because there is no incentive to do it, no reason to do anything at all and that is where having 2 bodies that each cover the entire range of recreational aviation will bring healthy competition into the fold. We may then start to see recreational aviation being promoted in schools, training classes on different aspects of recreational aviation like maintenance, support given to anyone that has a feasible idea of developing a bigger choice of Australian made aircraft, more social events and the promotion of recreational aviation throughout the land...all because if one governing body doesn't do it then the other will to get a bigger membership base and therefore more membership fees meaning more money to use in fostering recreational aviation. Cause it ain't getting done now with only one 3 Axis and many other bodies

Having 2 bodies looking after all recreational aviation groups may actually stop the spreading of membership across many different bodies as it is now but at the same time introduce competition to enhance our industry.

At the moment there is no reason for anyone to lift a finger and introduce "more" for us in the industry!

  6. now as long as we don't get a Cease & Desist letter from some ambulance chaser we can ..................

perhaps be assured that the great Australian Blue Tongue may not be a protected species after all, says Major Distress, of the accounts dept, which brings me to another point....

  7. I hope to be there one way or the other, Saturday to Sunday morning most likely.

Great to hear Tomo...I might have to get some Recreational Flying hats made up or something so we can recognise every one...any thoughts?

  8. In New Zealand there are two governing bodies in recreational aviation and this provides parallel paths for every recreational pilots. Yes it does introduce competition but as we all know competition in the form of a duopoly can be good for an industry not to mention the ensuring of both entities to act above board and for the customer...you, the recreational pilots.

Naturally if a cartel forms between the two entities all the benefits of healthy progression of an industry would be wiped out, but 2 entities, providing not only choice to the recreational pilot but also safety in the industry itself which could only be a good move.

The negative of having a duopoly in a small market as such that recreational aviation is in Australia, would be in the form of limited financial resources for each entity and what each entity could provide, but at least what they do provide, will be targeted in a way that provides more benefits to the recreational pilot and the industry in general...a healthy competition.

What do you think? If NZ can have two governing bodies looking after recreational aviation, wouldn't it sound feasible for Australia being a lot larger market to have a duopoly as well and would that benefit recreational pilots and the industry?
