Yes Pete, I know which is why I said "Smart Phones" and not Samsung Galaxy 3 for example although if Samsung just gave consumers only one choice as well like a Galaxy 3 I would be willing to bet that it would at least equal or be slightly higher in sales then the Iphone (apples for apples) and then add all the other smart phones out there like HTC etc and it becomes very clear that the winner of either Apple or Android is now clear that consumers are going for Android devices then Apple, narrowed down even further and possibly again just Samsung devices rather then Apple...and what you say is the very reason why industry talk is that the 7" Ipad (it's most likely to be about 7.8") is going to damage Apple:
http://mashable.com/2012/07/05/ipad-min-bad/
It says:
The iPad right now is one of those experiences. For both Apple’s customers and its competitors, it’s the tablet you aspire to. Throw a 7-inch iPad in there, and it becomes something else: the iPad Classic. It splits the tablet market in two, and it makes a mockery of the 10-inch iPad’s retina display by suggesting to tablet customers they can get along without one.
About a year ago I asked the question on several tech forums who was going to win the war between Google, Apple, Microsoft and "Others" and every one of the threads ended up being Google with Apple going down hill from 2012 to 2020 where there was a likely of Apple and MS joining together against Google.
You also have to remember where just about all of these devices are made...China, and China is now releasing their own operating system which will be standard on all "Chinese" devices that as we know the Chinese are good at, copied from the big names. I can today purchase a Smart Phone with the Chinese Operating system on it for about $30 USD (yes, before you ask, in English). So what is wrong with a smart phone that you can make phone calls with, receive phone calls, browse the internet etc...Telstra or Optus doesn't care if you are using a Samsung Galaxy 27 super personalised edition model or an Iphone version 6,256, if it makes and receives calls and only costs you $30 to have, who could end up being the winning brand...or should I say No Name Brand

Pete...it is not what Samsung ar4e saying but what Industry Analysts are saying:
-
Just read an article that says Samsung has sold almost twice as many smart phones as Apple has done so far this year...everyone has got the wrong idea of Apple...they are not innovators as many think they are, they are copiers and enhancers.
The Ipod was just a copy and enhanced version of the Sony Walkman...even as a result of a current court case where Apple are saying that Samsung copied Apple's Iphone, it was revealed that the designer of the Iphone was "told" to take design concepts from Sony Walkman. The Ipad is not new, Hewett Packard has been producing tablet PCs (Ipads) for some years before Apple even started looking at the Ipad.
I have today been able to go on to many websites with the Samsung Tab that I couldn't with the Ipad because of the way Apple has locked out "Flash" from their devices...Apple have even removed the YouTube App from their default device set up. I think about a year ago I said here in the forums that Apple will start to fall and with the Sales of Samsung Smart Phones, their Tab, the Google/Nexus Tab etc, it all seems to me, but I am not an authority on the subject, that it is all starting to come true

Please correct me if I am wrong but what you are saying is a way to have your mobile phone, of varying sizes, strapped around your thigh like kneeboards are...is that right?
-
I have in my hot little hands at the moment for testing and evaluation a Samsung Galaxy 8.9" Tab (tab is short for tablet PC, the non-Apple version of the Ipad running Android like your smart phone). This version is the Telstra 4G version that promises lightening fast browsing when in a capital city, where 4G is only available at the moment. It contains that fastest dual core processor as well.
After just 5mins of playing...WOW, it is REALLY REALLY REALLY nice to use and having an Ipad to compare it to I think the 8.9" is a far better size in the cockpit, anything larger (i.e. Ipad) is cumbersome and anything smaller (i.e. the supposedly upcoming 7" Ipad or mobile phone) is just too small to get the "Big Picture". I especially like the "Multi Tasking" ability of the Samsung for use in the cockpit in being able to be viewing say a chart and quickly switch back and forth to an ERSA page etc.
I will, if time permits, create a complete review of it...or then I might call on Gibbo (forum member) to give it a bash with Google Earth up in the air

I was visiting my son and daughter-in-law last night
when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper.
'This is the 21st century, old man,' he said.
'We don't waste money on newspapers. Here, you can borrow my iPad.'
I can tell you, that bloody fly never knew what hit it...........

Just to let everyone know (site owner's privilege
) but I have just added 2 types of IPAD Kneeboards into the Recreational Flying Pilot Shop...if that helps anyone -
Please can anyone who will be attending put your name up here so others can contact you about being their proxy

what you can do is go to the "Help" on the main menu, select smilies and see the code to enter in your post for the smiley you want...it is a : word followed by another : and that smiley will be inserted
this post with the smiley is being entered from my Ipad -
Just one of the many limitations of an Ipad and the "norm" of everyone else...the new Samsung 8.9 4g pad is scoring some good points and being the first 4g pad out there, and Android as well(that's interesting, no smileys on an iPad) Ian...IAN

I got my certificate with Nathan at Shepp many years ago and funny you should mention them as I spoke to Nathan today...dual is $195 in the Tecnams...ouch!IanYou could also consider Secure Air at Shepparton in their Tecnam P92ES's. There is a range of accommodation and services available in town which is only 2 hours from Melbourne. Dual rates are about $180 I think. -
Gotta say this thread is getting some great posts...posts that I am sure will help others

Thanks all and especially you Planedriver...yes, I am too proud but the offer is so much appreciated.
Guernsey, what about if it was say in a powered chute...does that still count?
Most of you will know the real reason why I haven't been able to go flying for some time now and I must say that everyone should not even consider going anywhere near the controls of an aircraft if their health isn't 100% right especially if you are on any kind of medication that can effect your thought processes...mind altering drugs

Next Monday I will be completely off all meds (this is the last week of being weaned off the last pill) and are anticipating getting the final 100% health tick by the doc so there is no holding me back now...can't wait to get back up in the air again.
Look after your health everyone and thanks for your input.

They really are a nice looking aircraft...and I am not biased

Please everyone, get behind this and have a say in the way YOUR Association is run...change is needed but not just for change sake but these couple of small changes to the constitution is simply the much needed "maintenance" that must be done from time to time otherwise the RAAus will end up in an even bigger mess.
-
Well this weeks poll will be interesting in gauging what the state of the industry is in.
There are arguments for and against having your own aircraft, personally I feel you just can't pass on the freedoms of having your own so where do you stand on if/when you may get in to having your own aircraft?

Hi
I need to do my BFR and looking for someone who I can do it with. Although I am in Melbourne, I can travel as a kind of little escape away from the rat race to do it, and would actually look forward to doing it that way. I am/was endorsed in Gazelle, Jabiru and CTsw although at 107kg I think the Gazelle is ruled out unless the Instructor is light weight (Gazelle having a MTOW of 520kg).
I haven't flown for a while so I suspect I will need to include a couple of hours of refresher lessons...as cheap as possible
Any offers out there???

Hi All
Just to advise that to make room on the main menu bar for the up coming "Clubs and Schools Section", I have removed the "Members" tab from the main menu bar.
The sub menu items of:
Members List - displays a list of all the registered members of the site plus more
Current Visitors - displays a list of all the visitors (Members and Guests) that are currently on the site
Recent Activity - displays the recent activities of members on the site
are now under the "Home" tab of the main menu bar.
The up coming Clubs and Schools Section will provide a complete and separate forum for each Club/School. Members of the Club/School can discuss, in normal threads and posts, anything specific to their Club/School. You can even create events in the event calendar which will automatically create a thread about the event in your Club/School forum and even put a reminder up when the event is less then 14 days away.
Here are some development screen shots:

Soft field take-off
Soft field procedures may be applicable to muddy, waterlogged or long/wet grass surfaces. The prime aim in a soft field take-off is to reduce the extremely long ground roll, and become airborne with less than adequate initial airspeed safety margin while utilising ground effect for fast acceleration. The following procedure should not be used in turbulent or gusty conditions, as the possibility of a stall after lift-off is increased.
In very soft conditions the usual technique is always to keep rolling; i.e. do not taxi to the take-off position and then stop to do the take-off checks — they should be completed beforehand. When lined up, open the throttle fully and smoothly while holding the control column back. Using a maximum lift flap setting is usually highly recommended. As the elevators become effective, the nose of a nosewheel aircraft will rise. With a taildragger, the elevator pressure should be relaxed sufficiently so that the tailwheel is held off the surface but the aircraft remains firmly in a tail-down attitude. As ground speed builds, start relaxing the back pressure and the aircraft will lift itself (or more likely lurch and stagger) from the surface at its minimum unstick speed [Vmu] and at an aoa very close to the stalling aoa — so, it is vulnerable to turbulence and mishandling. Also, P-factor and slipstream effect may come into play at this time, so it is important to keep the wings level with aileron and stop any turn with opposite rudder to negate any cross-controlled skid.
The pilot must then smoothly reduce aoa to 5–6° and hold the aircraft just above the surface in ground effect, so that it accelerates at the maximum possible rate. Gyroscopic effect may be significant during the pitch down to the smaller aoa, which must be anticipated with rudder. The aircraft is rotated after Vy (or Vx if there are obstructions) is attained to break it out of ground effect, held for a few moments to ensure it will accelerate, and then climb-out is commenced. At the initial rotation. the aircraft will slow as induced drag increases substantially and rapidly; firstly because of the restoration of the normal induced drag as it pulls out of ground effect, and secondly because of the increased aoa. The aircraft is likely to sink back to the surface if rotation occurs before sufficient speed is built.
The TODR for a soft field take-off will be considerably longer than that for a normal take-off. It is most unwise to attempt take-off from an airfield that is both short and soft.
The following is an extract from an RA-Aus incident report:
The pilot intended to conduct a trial instructional flight from a grass strip in excess of 250 metres in length. Due to recent rain the strip was soft and several solo take-offs had been carried out, each clearing the fence at the end of the strip by 25–30 m.
After some test runs with the passenger on board the pilot's 'gut feeling' was to abandon the exercise but he elected to take-off using a short field technique. The aircraft accelerated until the nosewheel lifted off the ground and then slowed, with the nosewheel sinking back onto the ground. Because he still had what he believed to be sufficient speed in hand the pilot tried to make it over the fence — and didn't. The damage to occupants was minor but the aircraft was a write-off.
The pilot identified the cause of the accident as lack of experience in operations from wet fields. In his words the aircraft was 'basically stuck to the field'

WOW, didn't expect that mate...but I am glad you are happy with it. I just wish there was a decent software product for Android as I really want to start providing the 7" and 10" tablet PCs with all the gear on them for you. The XCSoar program, which is completely FREE and for Android is a start.
Have spent today trying to source Safety Wire Twisters that I should be able to start selling soon for nearly half their normal price so I am always trying to find ways to get good products as cheap as possible for everyone

Email Addresses
in Site Announcements
Posted
Hi All
I am noticing that many of you are putting your email address in posts here on Recreational Flying. This is very dangerous for you as it allows spammers by way of using software that go into forum web sites and try and harvest email addresses from posts so they can start spamming you.
Please, if you want to/need to put your email address into a post, do so in a disguised manner with a note explaining how to ascertain your email address.
As an example, we all know that the "at" sign i.e. @ is used in email addresses, so we can disguise our email address by posting it like:
mynamedomain.com (insert @ between myname and domain)...a person would then know to use the email address of [email protected]
You can make up all kinds of different disguisers for your email address but in a way that any normal person (i.e. non email address harvesting software) would be able to ascertain what your email address is.
Another one for example is [email protected] (remove the 1 from the email address)
Hope this helps you in keeping your inbox more spam free but having the ability, only when necessary, to include your email address in a post
