  1. This is the current view...when this is over I hope someone can explain the logic of what was going on throughout this...BrettR44 (user here) use to be a crew member on the Dornier so perhaps he will come on and explain it all for us...information like this I think would be a great help should a situation ever arose for any of us.

I wonder whether you are having DNS issues...can you please monitor the problem for me and tell me if it is still popping up the next day or so?

  3. HH, and anyone else interested, what we have here at Recreational Flying is a text medium for people to read, and contribute, in the Forums, Blogs, News etc. We also have pictures for users to view and upload in forum posts and the Recreational Flying Photo Gallery. Likewise with videos, in forum posts and the Recreational Flying Video Library. What we don't have is a medium that has all three rolled into one of the kind that television for example provides. Television can use these three mediums in two ways...as entertainment and also as an enjoyable medium of information and learning.

I can provide the technology needed for this but don't have the time or focus that would be required to really capitalise on all the benefits that it can provide everyone here at Recreational Flying. What it would need would be a "Manager" and perhaps a team of individuals helping out that overall Manager to keep bringing it all together for everyone.

What we could have, and thus would need an "Organiser/Manager" to bring about would perhaps be a weekly visual aviation chat show, much like the way that a Podcast is with audio. Perhaps some roving reporters that attend flyins and air shows and conduct interviews with aircraft manufacturers about their aircraft, owners of specific interest aircraft, new product demonstration videos, interactive presentations...really the limit of what we can have on there would only be held back by the available resources that the Station Manager could recruit to help him/her.

There is also opportunity for it to be an income making resource with advertising or paid product demonstrations etc...income that could be distributed between the site and the resources looking after the Recreational Flying Television Station. The software has the built-in feature of being able to provide many different channels so you could even have one channel set up as a pay-to-view with purchased documentaries. You could have a mechanical "How To" channel where you have live interactive forums like those that are organised at Air Shows (e.g. changing the oil on a Jabiru Engine presented by abc).

Naturally everything has to start somewhere so the initial beginnings would be very basic and built up from there. Start with one thing...then get a couple of "entertaining" individuals to start a weekly aviation chat show...a couple of months later the next thing and etc etc etc.

So, in answer to your question about how much time would be needed...how long is a piece of string and how much would you like to do, how much hands on, how much organising others to do something that would contribute to its success...it all comes down to you and how much interest that can be gleaned from others...does all that help?

  4. 5 mins ago the final server details were sent to the chat software company so now we just have to wait for them to install the chat room again. Also the video/audio and whiteboard server is now up and running...we use a video streaming server based in Hawaii by Influxis. To see what video streaming apps we can have here on Recreational Flying click here

For those that didn't know our fantastic Recreational Flying Chat Room, you can see a demo of it here

  5. Hi All

Some great news that I would like to share...

    1. The Recreational Flying Video/Audio/Text Chat Room is almost back up and running...I say almost in that the payment has been made to the development company that produces the chat room for them to install it on this server. Once they have completed the installation, which is now in the queue, it is all tested and working properly, I will let you know so we can all start using the great features of the Recreational Flying Chat Room...ONLY for registered users of Recreational Flying

    2. Money has been paid for the new advanced "Search" function on the site. This advanced feature allows you to perform greater and more precise searches throughout the vast range of data that has accumulated here on Recreational Flying over the last 8 years of being the most popular recreational aviation forum/resource web site. The new search function will even understand words of less then 4 characters helping to define your search criteria into greater precision in the results produced of your search...ONLY for registered users of Recreational Flying

    3. I have been able to get permission to play a 10 part video documentary on the ages of aviation which includes over 200 different aircraft and footage of real aerial combat. So I will be bringing back the Recreational Flying Television Station (that previously never got off the ground due to not having content or a resource to run it), but ONLY for First Class Members. This 10 part documentary will be screened on the Recreational Flying Television on a set day and time (yet to be decided) every week for First Class Members to view. Please, if you would like to volunteer to be the Recreational Flying Television Station Manager, please let me know...more on this in the coming weeks once all the details have been finalised and the costs for this great feature paid for.

    4. The new updated Google Earth Airstrips is coming along nicely and the developer advises that completion of the new software is now only a few weeks away. This will add a greater enhancement in the fact that you will be able to add any notes, places to stay, contact me etc elements to any airfield that is listed or new ones that you add yourself...ONLY for registered users of Recreational Flying

    ...and there is more coming

  6. A couple of days ago I tried to start a new thread in the Aviation Laughter section. When I went to post it, I was told that I didn`t have permission to access Aviation Laughter. I thought! " That`s funny "! 033_scratching_head.gif.b541836ec2811b6655a8e435f4c1b53a.gif but I wasn`t amused. 013_thumb_down.gif.ec9b015e1f55d2c21de270e93cbe940b.gif .Havn`t tried again.

    Frank.002_wave.gif.62d5c7a07e46b2ae47f4cd2e61a0c301.gif

That was probably because at the time there was a message displayed across the top of the site for everyone to see that the site was "Read Only" as the files were being moved across to the new server

  7. No DP, it is one of the web development apps that I use to develop the site that is the culprit...it uses a conduit to upload things to the site in the back end and for some reason it dropped the fixed port number setting to use so it was doing a search for open ports on the server, and the server saw this as an untoward attempt and shut me down...best to reformat the hdd anyway as it is due, I do it every 6 months.

The post was really just a advisory that if you think you have been blocked you probably haven't as it can even happen to me...it is just the security systems doing their job.

  8. Yeah, the audacity of it...me...the one who cares and nurtures and feeds it...who changed its nappies every day when it was a baby...it is starting to get too cheeky for my liking...this is what happens to our children as I am also finding out with my 14 going on to 21 year old daughter.

Now it looks a like a complete reformat of my PC is on the cards and very careful scrutiny of every app that is installed borg.gif.490f3b4d1256219c0b8d76eba737cc26.gif

  9. I am posting this more of an advisory to everyone then anything else. The last couple of days one of the security systems on our server has locked me out of the site several times and...it is like I have been banned from the site or the site seems down and I can't connect to it. How I have known that it was just effecting me is I was able to connect to the site as a guest using a different PC at the neighbors house.

I have very strong security on my PC however, I have many different applications that are used for developing the site basically replicating a web server on my PC, plus other development apps as well.

Virus's can perform what is called a "Port Scan" where they look for an open door on your PC to send info out to their creator, but some applications that are above board can also do things like this in finding a correct port to operate with.

So what I have to do now is find the specific application, could even be a printer application on my PC, that has gone rogue on me and is not using a forced designated port.

I have had one "known" case where a user was locked out of Recreational Flying due to the software that their printer uses which gave the security on our server a false positive. Once he told me he couldn't connect to the site I was able to assist him in resolving the issue on his PC.

The point I am making is that the security on the server is great and even to the point that it has over the last 2 days locked me out of the site for 3,600 secs each time so please don't think there is anything sinister going on if this happens to you but if it does please always let me know and I can help to resolve any issues you may have and note that some lock outs just have a time setting of say 3,600 seconds, as in my case over the last couple of days.

We take both yours and our security very very seriously, and at a great financial cost, when using the Recreational Flying web site.

Now what bloody application on my PC is causing me grief 077_smash_pc.gif.f5903d27a57d2bd4c7b9e20e21a3465c.gif

  11. Hi All

It gives me great pleasure in announcing that the Recreational Flying User Blogs System is now back up and running live here on Recreational Flying.

I have imported all the user blog entries from the old software however any attachments were not able to be copied across so please accept my apologies for this and if you have a blog entry that is now missing an attachment, could you please edit your entry and attach the images again.

I hope you use the User Blog System to create your own Blog and post about what interests you and ask all other users to support the system by not only just creating your own blog but also make comments on other user's blogs.

This is only Stage 1 of the Recreational Flying User Blogs System and in a couple of months they will be enhanced even further into a full blogging system but first, let's get the system up and running and proven.

The Blog System is one component of the entire "Community" systems we have here at Recreational Flying for you to use. Under the "Community" banner we have:

    1. Forums - these are general discussion forums that are grouped into categories for users to discuss recreational aviation related areas of interest whether it be about your actual flying or your aircraft, you can discuss all this in the forums of Recreational Flying

    2. Social Groups - these are your own user generated forums that are based on a specific topic of interest and are controlled by the user(s) that generated the Social Group. You can have your own Social Group for say your Flying Club or a specific area of aviation that is not covered in the general forums like specific aircraft user groups and more

    3. User Blogs - blogs are a way for a user to tell the world about a specific interest or activity of the blog creator. They can be used as a type of journal or the thoughts of the blog creator on a specific topic. Once a user creates a blog entry, other users can comment on that blog entry which is all controlled by the blog creator...blogs are your personal way of communicating to world about what ever you want to or what ever your thoughts are.

    4. Chat Room - the chat room is a medium where you can have "live" group discussions on anything or even have live one to one discussions, you can use text, audio or even video through a web cam to participate in live discussions with many other like minded aviators. You can use the built-in whiteboard, play music and videos, share images and even give each other animated thoughts. (NOTE: The Chat Room is currently not updated to work with the site however it is the next thing on the agenda to update now the Blogs have been completed)

So there are the 4 "Community" focused components of the Recreational Flying web site for registered members to use freely and I hope you get some enjoyment in using them...as always, any helpful comments on how to improve the site for you are always extremely welcomed!

Coming soon is a fantastic new site search function that can actually try and ascertain what you be looking for by using words less then 4 characters unlike the site now (coming after the Chat Room update). Plus there are some more great features currently being worked on to be included in the "Free Pilot Resources" section.
