  1. We always seem to go down this track, instigated by the odd person to cause conflict, but there will always only be one side of a story here and that will remain so unless other sides are willing to respond. However, taking the approach that you would have everyone do, and not say anything because it is one side of a story, will make us all oblivious to what really goes on, sort of "I'm alright mate, stuff you" and when a fellow aviator does need help, they will fear responses such as yours and choose to suffer in silence. The day will always come when you will need help and for someone to say to you that what you are saying is only one side of the story then you may then realise that the whole purpose of this site was not to treat you as a mushroom and make you suffer in silence, but rather band together to support each other...what ever our needs may be, right or wrong.

When a user here says for example their Jabiru engine blew up because of xyz, then that is one side of a story. When a person says I crashed because of abc, then again that is only one side of a story...do we not say a darn thing because what ever we say will ALWAYS be one side of "a" story...the side from the person telling the story...hell, I may as well close this site, and we all throw our PCs away and go and sit in a court room, the only place where 2 sides of a story will always be presented and then judged on and a verdict given...and even then is the verdict correct, innocent people have been hung.

It all comes down to the individual taking on board what they choose to and not being told by someone else trying to start conflict on what a person should or shouldn't believe

  2. Firstly, in the spec for the updated Airfields section I have included the ability for users to be able to add their contact details, if they choose to do so, on each airfield entry. Users may choose to simply list their site username in the airstrip listing so you can start a private conversation with them about the airfield or even hooking up if you are visiting there.

In terms of being able to search for users in a specific location, that is not available with this software...it was with the old one. To add it to this one will require me to pay a third party developer to create it however there is a limitation to it. Currently the "Location" field is NOT compulsory to be completed by a user of the site so having a Location Search function would be limited to only those users that choose to enter their location in that field. If I were to enforce the completion of the Location field for all users it may not be supported by the majority of users on the site.

I do think that it is something we could explore though by way of a Poll to get an idea if users would not mind if the Location field was made compulsory or do you think the ability for users to list themselves under a airstrip listing in that section would do?

  3. I believe that again the Board had no idea of the letter from Steven Runciman to myself, furthermore the letter even says that all correspondence in regards to this matter should go directly to him...I was under the impression that the"normal" manner of correspondence would be by way of the Secretary. I believe the Board is going to have a look at it towards the end of September...I wonder how a persons membership can be denied by just the President and then that person has to wait so long before anything can be done...if anything at all outside of legal action

  4. Chris, gotta wait now for the legal action against the RAAus to take its course...Mr Steven Runciman is of the opinion that myself, this site and the freedoms it allows you in terms of being able to hold the RAAus board accountable by its members here brings the RAAus into disrepute so he says I am not allowed to fly because of it.

But Chris, how can a person pass up on such a good recommendation like that from Nev...stay tuned but I am sorry that members hard earned money in membership fees are most likely going to end up being used in the fight to stop me from flying.

  5. Also, forgot to mention...in your site settings (click your username on the right of the main menu) there is a feature where you can use the site to automatically invite your friends and Club or School colleagues to the site and you are also updated there if they join in.

  6. Social Groups on Recreational Flying have been updated...they now work like having your very own forum with threads and posts PLUS your Social Group posts are not displayed unless a user joins your group and you can set it so any new member to your Social Group has to be approved by you first...if you want it to be like that.

The Clubs-Schools section is just the same...you can have your very own forum for your Club or School right here at Recreational Flying by simply creating a Social Group in the Clubs-Schools section. Like the general social groups you can then decide whether you want your Club or School's posts visible to everyone or just members of your Club or School...for your events, when you enter an event in the site Event Calendar, you can select to just display the event to the members of your Club or School in your Social Forum or in the general forum Events for everyone to see...your choice.

So create your own forum here at Recreational Flying and invite all your friends and others from your Club or School to join in in your own public or private forum today...have fun and hope you find this feature here at Recreational Flying of benefit to you with your specific interest in the Social Groups (under Forums on the main menu) or your Club or School (Clubs-Schools section on the main menu).

  7. Hi All, today I was working on the site and somehow all of a sudden everything went dark 086_gaah.gif.afc514336d60d84c9b8d73d18c3ca02d.gif

When I was able to get over the initial grief and started looking for any damage I found that around 15 forums had packed up and left...a double:gaah: 086_gaah.gif.afc514336d60d84c9b8d73d18c3ca02d.gif

I checked the database and it seemed that the threads and posts were still around so if anyone wants to know what Daily Backups are for then this is it. I opened up the backup that I did last night and was able to extract the forums and their details and import them into the live site and rebuilt it all very quickly.

So to cut a long story short, I apologise for any inconvenience while the site was closed for about 30mins today while it was getting fixed...I believe that everything is ok and nothing was lost and this is simply because I religiously take a backup of the site every single day and store it on my own PC here at home so the site is kept at two different locations.

Please, if by some chance you notice something missing then let me know urgently...thanks and again I do apologise for any inconvenience

    -Linda

Hey Linda, Mr Steven Runciman is preventing me from being allowed to fly, as he puts it, for bringing the RAAus into disrepute...but I will still continue to allow this site, for all of you, to be able to have the freedom of speech here and be able to have the right to question and hold the management of YOUR Association accountable to you...no matter what he does to me

So Linda, I guess it looks like Brian can 080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif and you and I can drive.gif.1181dd90fe7c8032bdf2550324f37d56.gif

  9. *puts hand up*Providing the weather allows us to get out over the divide.

    -Linda

Sorry Linda but you can't go...Brian is taking me...guess you will have to walk...better still, Brian, you start walking and I will go with Linda 003_cheezy_grin.gif.c5a94fc2937f61b556d8146a1bc97ef8.gif

  10. Is it feasable to include local flyer friendly accomodation for overnighting?

Yes it is, it would be by way of users adding details of establishments into the notes of each strip.

Note, the money has already been paid to the developer who is going to update the software for us and I am just waiting for a notification of a development slot (date) for it

  11. In about a weeks time I will be finished with my evaluation and then I have to either keep it or sell it. So I thought that I would let you know that it will be available to buy for anyone that wants one cheaper then going to Telstra and getting one. I already have an Ipad so having 2 tablets would be a luxury that I really can't afford and I have now achieved what I needed to do in evaluating this very nice tablet.

So far the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G can be considered in simple terms as a much larger Android powered telephone, so if you have a Samsung, HTC etc phone you will be very up with the way the tab works however there is some great features in terms of having the screen size available for the enhanced use of your favourite apps PLUS it has some great unique features of quickly switching between different apps that you already have open (multitasking). Having the bigger screen size allows you to have a lot more on the screen at the same time so you can see all together your latest emails, 7 day weather, icons for your most used apps plus room for any other displayed widgets all on the screen together. Like your phone it has 5 different pages (screens) that you can quickly slide between allowing you so much to view at once between the pages. Compared to the Ipad, I can put a hell of a lot more on the Samsung's screen then I can on the Ipad making the Samsung a hands down winner in being able to access what I mostly use a lot quicker and easier.

So about the size. In a doctors waiting room yesterday I felt far more comfortable having it with me then carrying around and using the larger Ipad. This confirmed to me that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 would far better suit a cockpit then an Ipad sized device yet at the same time doesn't make you squint/refocus/where's my darn reading glasses etc that say a 7" device or your mobile phone would cause you. The silly thing is the Galaxy 8.9 in landscape mode is only so very slightly narrower, about 7mm, then the Ipad is however in portrait mode it is about 1" narrower then the Ipad. Naturally both devices have "rotate" ability however the Ipad is native in the Portrait mode and the Samsung is designed to be native in the landscape mode...so what does this mean? It means that if you are using the pad/tab for viewing websites, reading a book etc then there is basically no difference between the two units in their width...the font size is the same, the pics are the same size etc...there is no difference. However, the Samsung with it smaller overall size in native height, you need to swipe up more often to see the next part when reading. The question is "Is this detrimental in your use of the device given the advantages of it being more suited in more situations like the cockpit?"...Only you can answer that one but for me I don't see it as any issue due to that fact that I am very use to swiping a screen with my finger. BUT, and there is a big BUT with the Samsung. The Samsung has a great unique feature that if you are using it in portrait mode like the Ipad, you see the same as on the Ipad but the Samsung's text is smaller...no problem if you are holding it with both hands...simply tilt the screen a little and the whole screen zooms...tilt the Tab back a little and the screen goes back to the same as the Ipad...I use this feature on my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone all the time and it is a great unique feature.

Another cool feature with the Samsung is the "Quick Bar" at the bottom...click an arrow that is displayed in the middle of the task bar across the bottom of the screen and up pops quick access icons of apps like a notepad, task manager, calculator etc. I also like the screen shot button that sits in the left of the task bar next to back, home, latest tasks etc buttons. The right of the task bar is like your PC with the time, reception and battery indicator.

The Ipad keyboard is much better and easier to use then the default Samsung keyboard on the device. This to me is because I use symbols etc in such things as password and what not so I often have to go through several layouts on the Samsung keyboard to enter specific keys. The Ipad has what I need with just the ABC and 123. The way I have to fix this on every Samsung device I get is in the settings, turn off the Samsung keyboard and use the Android default keyboard...Samsung phones I have to select the Swype keyboard...not a biggy and most probably due to my own requirements of the use of the keyboard but easily changed in the settings.

Now to the Apps side of things. Arguably Apple have a much larger range of apps for the Ipad compared to the number of apps available for Android devices however the gap between the two is continually being narrowed. Personally I have always found an app to do what I wanted to do for my Samsung Android phone but no doubt there will in both camps be apps that are not in the other. But, I now come to the very reason why I wanted to test drive the Samsung. Not only for the possibility that it may be a better fit for us in terms of size but how well it would handle Google Earth.

My Ipad always struggled with Google Earth however I can say that the Samsung, having now installed and tested it, handled Google Earth much better. Perhaps this is due to the Google Android/Google Earth connection or the powerful processor and memory that the Samsung has...maybe it's both. The GPS capabilities of the Samsung together with Google Earth I think paves the way for the potential of a great combination and thus future solution in a Pilot's quest for a great Aviation GPS. The whole question of this potential solution is a subject on its own, especially when you at home can create your own WOW packed, feature rich solution to have in the cockpit with that is absolutely FREE...use layers to create incredible graphical representations of airspace boundaries, store enormous info on each and every landing strip etc etc etc:

    http://www.recreationalflying.com/threads/google-earth-as-a-moving-map-engine.27482/

The Samsung has all the software and capabilities to use it as a phone however these have been turned off by Samsung...not a good move in my opinion and I can't seem to ascertain the reasoning behind it. However, with the unit using Android version 3.2 I am guessing (note I say guessing) that when (and if) the Samsung Galaxy 8.9 Tab is able for you to upgrade it to Android v4 (called Ice Cream Sandwich), the phone capabilities may suddenly become available

Finally about the hardware of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. All the technical specs can be found at:

    http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/mobile-phone/mobile-phone/tablet/GT-P7320FKETEL-spec

    What is notable is:

    • 4G capability (although currently being rolled out beginning with capital cities and selected areas)

    • Dimension (HxWxD) 157.8 x 230.9 x 8.6mm

    • Weight 458g

    • 1.5GHz Dual Core processor

In summary, I personally think the size and weight is a winner, the features are greater then Ipad, the ease of use is better then the Ipad but then it all comes down to the question of what you, the user, are willing to put importance on with either an Ipad or Samsung Galaxy 8.9" Tab. Or maybe the question of whether you are a die hard, nothing will compare etc, Apple person or favour the less restrictive and more adventurous benefits of Android devices. I think the biggest question is whether the size and weight of the Samsung Galaxy 9.8" Tab is more suited to your needs or not...once you answer that question, you can decide whether to delve deeper in this what I think to be a very nice, capable and powerful 4G tablet.

Oh, one last thing...with the Samsung Galaxy Tab my kids can go on to their favourite web sites like ABC3 and other kids sites where they can't with the more restrictive Ipad.

If you would like to buy this Samsung Galaxy 9.8" Tab off me, it has had one charge, is basically brand new, comes with 2 screen protectors and a leather case that has a BlueTooth Keyboard in it then you can have it for $550. You would then get a 1 year data/SMS Telstra card for $180 that gives you 12gig of data a month...whereas if you were to purchase it from Telstra it would cost you $1,152 minimum over 2 years and only 1gig of data a month. If so then please let me know before someone else jumps in and takes this one.

Hope this helps and note that it is ONLY my opinion
