  1. Coroner holds a Pilot License. I know nothing about the the experts. But many airline pilots start out as GA and RAAus instructor. One of our hangar neighbours owns and regularly flies a Jabiru along with his other aircraft. His day job is as an airline pilot. He is nowhere near retirement. Its a fairly common scenario.
  2. Yes. And yes. But others at Mt Beauty say there was a patch of blue. He did not have the training to correctly assess the weather and clearly thought he could climb out. He flew for 40 minutes before crashing. And smsd his fiance shortly before crashing without indicating concern or distress. You don't know what you don't know. And once again I say, he didn't take off expecting to crash. Adequate training may have helped him make a better decision on the day. And unfortunately we will never know whether training as per RAAUS's own framework would have made that difference.
  3. Of course he has some responsibility. But methinks RAAUS bears the brunt of it.. Lying to the Coroner, withholding information doesn't help their cause.
  4. Yes, but you, and they are basing your weather assessment on training & experience. I'm told by others at Mt Beauty that he took off during a brief lull between flights. A patch of blue was visible. He didn't expect to crash.
  5. Actually in my opinion you're wrong. Training won't ensure all decisions are sound. But does give an educated basis to form an opinion. Accelerated/shortened training removes that. You don't know what you don't know.
  6. Perhaps this accident has had an effect on timing. Given the review that is coming.
  7. RAAUS used to do investigations. They stopped during the process for this crash.
  8. Guessing this memo got missed. RAAUS definitely had lawyers there.
  9. "People are not understanding what they are hearing." Yep. Definitely applies to some. 🤷‍♂️ And some seem to have read news reports and be basing their comments on these. The Coroner's Findings are readily available, reattached here, but... COR 2022 005430 Form 37-Finding into Death Following Inquest_Signed.pdf
  10. I am no expert. But I thought the referral would cover more than the one board member? Perhaps those that knowingly tried to conceal information from the Coroner, including a senior employee who he was scathing about in the report?
  11. You stated it was an instruction. Now its an interpretation. 🤦‍♂️
  12. The Coroner made a referral to the DPP. It's stated in his report. He didn't make an instruction to the DPP because this isn't something a Coroner does. 🤦‍♂️
  13. No suggestion of anything other than a medical event. I believe he was in his 80's. If you haven't read the Coroner's Findings as opposed to what's here, and in the media it may be worthwhile. Attached here for your convenience. COR 2022 005430 Form 37-Finding into Death Following Inquest_Signed.pdf
  14. I think maybe you missed the bit where it says he is deceased. It's stated in the Coroner's Findings.
  15. My early IFR lessons I struggled with S&L and upset recovery. Not just trusting the instruments, but retraining my brain to focus on them, treat the AH like it was the view out the window, and keep my scan going. Without an autopilot, reliable IFR instruments, practise and training it would be really really difficult.
  16. Would the pilot know anything about the risk of icing given the training he had received? Do unpowered paraglider pilots cover icing etc when training?
  17. Were you not taught what the regulations are re distance from cloud, visibility etc?
  18. Genuine question. What happened in 2013?
  19. Coroner’s Findings attached.COR 2022 005430 Form 37-Finding into Death Following Inquest_Signed.pdfCOR 2022 005430 Form 37-Finding into Death Following Inquest_Signed.pdf
  20. Cross country in an unpowered paraglider? Hmm, I've no idea but an interesting concept.
  21. Given some were named on Friday by the Coroner, and referrals were made to the DPP..
  22. Another hearing?? Coroner's Inquest finding was delivered last Friday. With some costs, quantum to be determined, awarded against RAAUS. Recommendations mafe by the Coroner included a review by CASA of RAAUS. There will undoubtedly be civil action against RAAUS given the findings. But 'another' hearing already scheduled and costed? 🤔 Tell us more
  23. Pilot, local to Mt Beauty, has said he left during a lull in the weather. Blue sky was visible. Guessing he thought he could get out safely.
  24. Think you've mixed people? Matt Boutell went to casa. No longer there I'm told. And overreach? Hmm deliberately withholding relevant information from a Coroner is okay?
  25. Written report not yet online. But it was livestreamed when he delivered it on Friday.
