  1. I can confirm from my schools new aircraft that the Savanah S does not cruise any faster than the speeds quoted for the XL.. 80 knots at 5000rpm. With a change in prop pitch estimate is it should be able to go 85-90 knots but why bother... One thing I have noticed is that regardless of whether one up or two climb is still an easy 1000fpm or at least hardly noticable perhaps due to the big fat efficient wing... I noticed with the Texan Lsa that I flew before the Savanah S that removing the instructor made a 300fpm difference.

I found that the transition to the Sav S was completely painless... but perhaps I was lucky in that the first day I flew it we had perfect conditions and had probably the best flight so far. The other students at the school have been heard to grumble a bit about not having the Texan to fly anymore but for me... give me a Savanah any day. Its just feels so damn capable and flys like its on rails with a nice solid (yet not heavy) control feel... and the centre Y stick is far, far superior in my opinion. I also like the manual 2 position flaps much more than the electric of previous aircraft. I find the landing particularly nice.

  2. Hi Maj,

It seems the only difference between the XL and S is the rounded fuselage... besides that and some difference in setting up the wing tank taps I really couldn't spot any difference between the factory and the kit built... it was interesting to look over the first kit built Sav you arrived in too... very little has changed with the Sav's over the years which must be a testament to them having got it pretty right the first time around (besides the widened cockpit of course).

That was my first time flying into Shute... and probably my last for quite a few years at least as PIC due to the requirement for 100 hours command time... It is a shame really because Shute Harbour didn't seem too difficult to land at... of course you get a fair bit of turbulance and bouncing when on final... but plenty of length and plenty of room for a go around if things aren't looking right. Of course the Sav makes it easy due to its excellent flying qualities. It would be great to be able to nip up to Shute for one of the excellent burgers and a nice coffee at the Beaver Bar but I guess it will have to wait.

By the way did you see the Sirius arrive before the airshow?... seemed a pretty good example of not how to land at Shute... but a testament to the strength of the aircraft's undercarriage... boing boing boing boing boing... lol I had a look at the Sirius on the Monday as the pilot was refueling... it was Siriously nice (forgive the pun) but not my cup of tea... Glass cockpit and something called "auto-flap"...

  3. It was a nice flyby too Ross... Matt's Flying did 4 TIFs on Saturday afternoon, and another couple this morning (with one new student and her husband planning on continuing all the way). Matt and I departed at about 1350 this afternoon in the Sav S for Mackay... The Yak52 came back to Mackay with an empty seat and though it was tempting flying the Sav back won out... lol

It was a great weekend and as soon as I can get my photos and video's sorted I will be linking them in here... It was truly great to meet you and sorry we didn't get a chance to catch up again on Sunday.
