  1. Fingers crossed. Regulator/rectifiers aren't super complicated, so hopefully they can't skimp on parts, unlike fake iPhone chargers, some of which are lethal.
  2. I'm pretty happy with my car 115. About 40 hours running so far, solid 14.4V
  3. Job done! Is it better? Dunno πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ But it's not worse πŸ˜„ Didn't get to fly due to the weather though. I'm going to install a capacitor next time. The regulator/rectifier I have isn't supposed to need one, but today I attached one using alligator clips and even though it wasn't an ideal location, near the starter instead of immediately after the regulator, it seemed to help when the engine was running. Internally, the dowel is to steady the aerial as I attached it to the fabric covering. I think this will work well πŸ™‚
  4. Well, my plane is now fully registered, so hopefully can tell you about my NEXT flight, with my first official passenger ☺️
  5. If you're talking about my link, the pilot doesn't sound upset to me.
  6. Wasn't sure where to put this, but the guy did say he learnt something today ☺️ Just nice to something constructive and non dramatic regarding safety for a change πŸ™‚
  7. I ask because if you didn't build it, then you are in the same boat as 24 rego.
  8. If you are using resin flux, it's really not necessary.
  9. I ended up soldering most of my connectors. The main danger with solder, as you mentioned is the wire is stiff right after the connector and could crack or break. But if you run your wiring so that there is little to no movement, it should be fine. I feel safer with solder.
  10. Did you build the Polaris?
  11. At what point is it 11.3V. is it a lead acid battery? at rest the battery should be about 12.4v. charging should be over 14V. But sometimes ya gotta work with what you've got so anything over 13V is ok with a load on.
  12. Photos orbit didn't happen πŸ˜‡
  13. If it's trying to roll left, shouldn't you trim that out? Or is that what the bungee is achieving? No trim tabs? Anyway, I enjoyed the (sideways) view 😺
  14. Something like that happened in Australia in the fifties. Small airliner of some sort. The mechanic got called away for a phone call and had an argument with his wife. He forgot to finish what he was doing and the plane crashed. I think it might have been Australias largest crash. They mandated new procedures after that to help eliminate those sorts of situations. I read about it in the flight safety magazine we'd get in the 90s. I bore that in mind while working on the engine. For instance, masking tape over the ignition switch saying NO OIL IN ENGINE. But then it a went out the window once the headphones were on.
  15. Well, finally put the plane back together. Took my time on it. But THREE times I was interrupted by people coming in to have a chat. I was very careful about what it was I was doing so that I continued where I left off without missing anything. However, where I disappointed myself was being in a rush to do a circuit after starting it and rechecking the oil level. It was getting a little late and I ended up not doing a complete preflight check, it was just luck id even taken the pitot cover off! I survived, but clearly I wasn't in the right frame of mind to be flying, let alone a flight test. If there was an emergency in that frame of mind, would I have handled it well? If I get in a similar situation again, I'll be sure to just pack up and come back another day. It's not like there's any schedule to get somewhere.
  16. Skippy, I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone with my first oil change. I got a disposable aluminium BBQ drip tray thing and bent it to shape to fit under the tank. I taped it in place. That oil shot out so fast it came loose and splashed everywhere πŸ˜„ "Oh Mr Hart, what a mess!" So I had to manhandle this hot, rapidly filling tray onto the ground and just let the oil pour into the bottom cowling. Next time, I will use some scrap cardboard (or flashing like you) and just leave the tray on the ground and the flashing sitting, WIRED securely to the bottom of the cowl. Facthunter, there is a magnet near the gearbox, presumably since most ferrous metals will emanate from there. There were some tiny bits on there. πŸ˜‡

  18. Correction - blue adventures advised two spanners. The oil tank is nowhere near as solid as a sump pan, so you risk tearing or cracking the weld
  19. Well, hard to go wrong with the Rotax oil tank. Thanks to (Skippy?) for reminding me to use two spanners πŸ™‚
  20. I ended up buying a couple of copper washers from the local mechanic. It was exactly the right size too (18 od 12 id) ☺️ The one that was on there was aluminium. It had just the slightest weep over the period I've run it, about 40 hours.
  21. In that photo is a sliver of something non ferrous, probably 6-7mm long. There were maybe 3 slivers of roughly similar dimensions.
  22. Oh oh 😟
  23. It takes a LOT to totally block an oil filter. And the oil itself, it was always pretty fresh, since I had to keep topping em up all the time. My worst was a Mustang I drove from Vancouver BC to Phoenix AZ. I could only buy 1 litre bottles of oil at the time. So I bought four and pretty much used them up in two weeks πŸ˜„
  24. Yes, there is a reason I'm doing this, as you would note from the oil filter cutter thread ☺️ Mind you, when I drove old clunkers, I used to change the filter every second oil change. And air filter? The engines still running , isn't it? I just didn't worry on a five hundred dollar car πŸ˜„
  25. I was going to do an oil change this weekend, but realised I don't have a new crush washer for the oil tank, which it's recommended to change. I have a feeling my oil tank just has a copper washer, but I could be misremembering it. What are people's experiences here? Can a copper washer be substituted? If I need the crush washer, where are people buying them from?
