  1. Take Takeoffs, landings and circuits are the most character building activities in aviation - highly stressful and action packed. The only other aviation activity of high stress is paying the bills.
  2. I think we are all on the same page.
  3. If you go only half way and institute Oz style Espace from 1200 feet you will require transponders from 1200 feet. Is this what Dick wants or does he want transponder less Espace. (I don't think CASA, AirServices or RPT would like that). Dick Smith does not make policy for aviation in Australia. The cautionary approach would cast the worst case scenario!!!
  4. But you can contract with a GA school to undertake a flight review and gain a GA RPL based on your RAA training. If you pick up some RAA endorsements on the way you can obtain the equivalent RPL endorsements - like the cross country. Try a GA school that trains on J230s or C152s to minimise the aircraft differentials. Keep us posted on your efforts and rewards. Gostner Aviation at Camden trains RAA and GA in Jabirus, Schofields Flying Club at Bankstown and Curtis at Camden are GA only but are well regarded and have transitioned people from RPC to PPL without much pain to either side. you could also talk to Bruce Robins at Wollongong who trains RAA but who might have some good advice.
  5. I suppose that a body floating around the harbour is a bit offensive to some. There is probably a strong argument for EPIRB for bushwalkers and kayakers because of the very high emotional and financial costs of missing bushwalkers and kayakers. Having the Daily Telegraph and Alan Jones whipping up a firestorm of feigned outrage is usually enough to turn a politician into an alcoholic. In the case of cyclists on the road and/or without helmets the outrage of the whole community is palpable.
  6. If you are alone in your boat and you are not wearing a life jacket and you cannot swim or become disabled and you fall in there will be no-one there to rescue you. I presume that, like seat belts and bike helmets, the government has decided you should be protected - even prime ministers.
  7. The trick with Espace is clearance from cloud for VFR. With Gspace clearance from cloud is not as big an issue. Espace around airports in US down to 700' AGL is to ensure that VFR aircraft don't get in the way of IFR traffic.
  8. Your just guessing Bull!! Quite a lot of the costs of new weight and access initiatives are covered by free labour by board members, the balance would come from the membership and registration contributions of the fantastics flyers.
  9. No one has settled the cost aspect of RAA. Perhaps the costs to run RAA are bound up in supporting the cheap end of the market with their non uniform designs and construction methods being built by a group whose skillset ranged from fantastic to abysmal out of materials of highly variable quality. I don't know the answer to the fair allocation of cost question and I think you are just guessing as well.
  10. If you put PV or hot water collectors on all the illuminated space on your roof you don't need to agonise over colour - unless you are concerned about the opinions of the man on the moon.
  11. I'm not sure what the rules are but maybe if you own a bit of dirt and you fly below 300 feet you can do whatever you like - just a thought. Outside that space and you are playing in someone else's space and you start needing to play by their rules.
  12. There will be some incident heating from both radiation and ambient heat. Highly polished aluminium has no insulating layer so when the surface heats up it conducts into the Al mass. Painted surfaces are, usually, highly non-conductive and surface heat just sits there and get re-radiated rather than being conducted through to the substrate.
  13. Ah Nev, you have to live here to truly appreciate Sydney. People from Melbourne and football supporters just don't get it. There might be a hundred thousand or so Sydneysiders who give a stuff about football or cricket, the rest of us don't give a damn (or about Victoria generally)
  14. inflation high? for the last couple of years it has been below 2% The difficulty, in Australia, is that the banks, government incentives, interest rates, capital gains tax and negative gearing are driving investment to the residential housing sector and speculative development. The only things worse are gaming, bit coins and shares in mining companies
  15. It used to be a 15 Square (about 10m**2) on a quarter acre block. The norm now appears to be 25m**2 on a 1/8 acre block, filling it to the boundaries with no green space, no eaves, much A/C and electric clothes drying (McMansions) - the new age slums are with us now.
  16. It is a pity that the Mail didn't tell about the ex DCA airports handed over to councils and then placed under the control of 3rd parties to the exclusion of everyday GA and RAA operations or under usurous conditions of access. It seems like the Chinese are gentlemen in relation to access.
  17. You don't need a transponder on Dspace. But if they bring Espace down to 1200 feet in the Sydney basis you will need one to fly above the trees (or you will have to fly coastal in Victor One)
  18. But he can turn up every 5 minutes demanding proof of compliance to every petty demand together with the attendant threats. Police and other enforcement officers have been known to issue fines just for the hell of it.
  19. Ah!! "The Australian", a journal of dubious record and noted more for the opinions of its writers rather than hard won facts. It is of course driven into 3rd place of crap by the "Telegraph" and "Herald-Sun" but generally only by the thickness of a cigarette paper.
  20. If you want AWIS en-route you will need access to the mobile network as more and more radio services get terminated. Maybe the inbound checklist should include "Check AWIS, Disable Bluetooth, check and adjust altimeter"
  21. Dear Steve Hitchens,. If a strip is uncharted there is the distinct possibility that someone won't know it is there and may sail through at 1000 AGL on area frequency because he wants to know what the other traffic is up to and what ATC is doing about conflicts. Pretty hopeless being on Multicom with a single frequency radio in this situation.
  22. Oh, I don't know but the NSW Corps, Macarthur and cronies would have left some of the bad boys in their wake.
  23. Getting out the map to work out what area frequency is is usually the last thing one remembers. Just because something is done in the calm doesn't mean that it is a good idea when one is desperate.
  24. Midweek quite a few small airstrips are unused and the CTAF is non monitored so if you are flying along below 5000 feet and you get into strife calling mayday or pan pan on 126.7 or an unused CTAF (these should be the main and standby on the radio) won't get you noticed. I would much prefer that the 2 frequencies are CTAF (or 126.7) or Area. This would make it much easier to aviate, navigate AND communicate. Life would really be much easier if the secret ALAs were on the map (and using 126.7) then we would know they were there as we cruise along at 1000 feet AGL. Increasing CTAFs to 20 miles would just produce a bigger radio dead zone during the week.
  25. It will also depend on whether qualifying only for a conditional commercial MV Licence gets you over the line. This is one of the stumbling blocks of the RAMPC/DL standards.
