The petition does not call for the abolishment of ASIC for general aviation it calls to share the costs of security.

Though a pilot, I am not eligible to apply for an ASIC because I don't require frequent access to a secure airport.

Sure I could just say I do, but that is not true.

reg 6.01 Operational need means

a requirement for frequent access to all or part of a secure area.

My need would be maybe twice a year at best, for one or two airports that are as dead as a dead thing that died in a ditch. One has two RPT flights a day.

Now that’s an interesting rebuff if ever get challenged for not displaying an ASIC !

I have had one for over 5 years and never been asked to show it on the few occasions I have flown into a Security Controlled airport. However, the recent doubling of cost to over $500 means I shall not renew it when my current one expires.

I often go to Point Cook for RAAF museum events and CASA seminars , but despite being a military airport the ASIC is NOT ACCEPTED as ID there, instead they want a driver's licence. A driver's licence is only ONE form of id you have to supply in order to get an ASIC. Bloody farcical.

I did not renew asic recently, as above 4-6 times a year to small regional airports is not frequent in my view. Cost is now $500 and only two years, a joke. $250 and 10 years might consider it.

There are some rare exemptions for not requiring an ASIC at a security controlled airport :

4) Subregulation (1) does not apply in relation to a security controlled airport from or to which no regular public transport operation operates.

(4A) At a security controlled airport from or to which no screened air service operates, paragraphs (1)(a) and (b) apply only during traffic periods.

If you are an ‘infrequent’ visitor to security controlled airports and therefore don’t have a valid reason for having an ASIC, you must theoretically apply for a Visitor Identification Card (in advance of your visit) to the airport(s) operator, and then must still be escorted whilst airside.

Seems like years, that I have been "banging on" about the irrelevance of ASIC , for private pilots accessong regional airports.

One of points against ASIC has been the changes in technology - drones!.

I think I also mentioned, that in the pre drone era, in N Ireland,  the IRA mortered an airport, from outside the security fence.

My point being that ASIC will do sweet F...A...  to stop a casual, let alone a determined, terrorist.

When I was working at Heathrow the IRA also attempted to mortar the airport from just outside the perimeter fence - once from the back of a van in a hotel carpark to the north and once from an area used by plane spotters to the east.

Cheers,

Neil
