  1. I have been asked by ATC to change my path as there is a VFR plane with a conflict that is on the wrong altitute (East v's west) and not responding to calls from ATC. My gut feel is, once the autopilot goes on it's more IFR than VFR without the added safety of ATC overview. Especially with the proliferation of flight director type AP's in smaller planes now.
  2. I have 2, one is a passive GME PLB and I have a Zoleo for 'active' so my family can see where I am, message me out of mobile range. This makes the wife happier.
  3. And let's not forget to desire to make VFR pilots responsible for avoiding drones which are flying under BVLOS rules. I don't know about you, but on occasion I struggle to see fellow Jabiru's when I know exactly where they are. How am I supposed to see a drone the size of a shoe, that does not have ADSB and is grey in colour?
  4. When you say the fuel breathers are air flow facing, if they are on top of the wing they may be subject to low pressure and induce a vacum. I had this on a Gizelle where if you faced the breather what felt to logical way ended up causing an issue.
  5. I usually use the joke that I got my pilot license to get over my fear of heights, and my passenger endoresement to get over my other fear...... the fear of dying along. This is of course told once we get to TOC and start cruise.....
  6. Interesting flight route, as oppposed to runinng the magenta line?
  7. I see the need to learn the basics of non-electronic assisted navigation. As someone who learnt land navigation pre-GPS and did many multi-day treks I am glad I have that skill when I see how the general public struggles withouot their phone to just get around the city. Sure, it is easy to just google how you are going to get there. I use Google Maps when I drive but I have the main points on a piece of paper to remind me where I need to turn etc. I have had Android Auto just shut off multiple times when in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney and would have been hoplessly lost, as my kids have been.
  8. Paper charts, pencil/pen and paper for log, and a wiz wheel not the calculator/electronic version. I do use a big number calculator for the math as I am hopeless with math these days, especially when calculating groudn speed.
  9. I do the same thing around YMIG (Mittagong), where I fly up to YWBN (Wedderburn), out to the coast and down to YSHL (Shellharbour), skirt the restricted zone around YSNW (Nowra) and up over the escarpment and then follow the 23nm circle around to ther west, and comeback into YMIG to the south of the Camden training area. I do it clockwise, counter clockwise, count my time, count my fuel etc.
  10. It's a self centering technique to keep aircraft aligned on the centreline. 😄
  11. so the ATSB will investigate a student pilot crashing a plane on a go-around where the student walked away, but won't investigate any RAAUS accidents involving deaths?
  12. Just to stir the pot a little, does this mean if you are on auto-pilot so cease being a pilot as you are no longer 'controlling the operations of the machine"?
  13. That is a good point, read the POH. For my Jabiru slips with flaps are allowed. The emergency decent method is take off flaps and slip like a MOFO.
  14. All the way to the flare, my instructure at my last BFR made me do a 1000ft side slip to flare and land with engine at idle....was a lot of fun.
  15. Keep it a private ALA, you need permission to land on it (unless it is an emergency) like when you mates drive their cars on your property.
