Any advice on a nice bright strobe I can fit to my tail. Experimental !

I see aircraft spruce have them starting around $150.

I don't want buyers remose, as I have no idea. Will a cheap one work or do I pay the big money. I want to buy it once and I want it bright.

Thanks Lyndon

If your a VFR day only pilot - save your $$$$😈

The only way we could find the LSA55 I trained in when it was flying was The strobe on the tail.

Little planes disappear into the background

Anything that makes you More visible can't be a BAD thing. I think some strobes may cause radio interference, but I'm no expert . Nev

Perennial debate - Do small aircraft lights (strobes/wigwags) actually confer a significant  benefit for aircraft to aircraft (air to air) visual capture in day VFR conditions????

Many say yes, especially if using modern LED technology.

Past research says no, however may not have been done with modern lighting LED systems.

There is no doubt that lights are effective for seeing an aircraft from the ground or in low light (VFR?) conditions but air to air?????

We instinctively think that lights will improve an aircraft visibility, we compare with ground based vehicles and argue something is better than nothing - none of this is science based.

Current Australian regulation do not require day VFR  aircraft to be fitted with lights - I believe this to be a reflection of the research ( as stated may be out of date)

Personally I think that the best visual capture system, for day VFR, is good radio communication - this gives the pilot a clue as to the other aircraft location in space, thus minimising the area to be searched.😈

I fitted a set of these,

Aveo GliderBurst DayLite – Wingtip Strobe Light

One on top of fin and one bottom of fuse.  $451 at Aircraft Spruce Australia.

I also fitted their 8 LED rectangular landing light, they have other types now.

They seem about the cheapest good quality brand items.

You are NOT being Logical skip. Radio is "extra to" not instead of. Radio positions are often wrong, with poor or inexperienced operators, resulting in a More dangerous situation existing, because you are looking in the wrong place. Nev

It is true, that a strobe light on, in very sunny, clear, daylight conditions does very little for visibility. But it may reduce the risk of bird strike, because birds are very alert to anything different in the sky around them.

Being intermittent Helps but in bright sunlight it's Not very effective. Bird Behaviour is Fairly unpredictable in My experience . I don't recommend flying LOW over swamps. Nev

With limited knowledge I would go max briteness and decent life LED and probably an aviation specific brand (with its high cost).

Aviation seem to be way behind other transport sectors when it come to safety/visibility.

White, light blue or grey paintjobs are unwise but somehow common.

When my strobe failed, I replaced it with a strobe light from a home alarm system. Worked a treat.

So you think it's nice a bright???

I like the sound of something cheap.

You digress- the topic is lights, not paint/colours

Despite the empirical evidence (could be out of date) that lights on day VFR only aircraft, do little, if anything, to assist in air to air visibility, pilots still love fitting them. Good -on -em!

As for aircraft colours -

There is a colour, at each end of the visible light spectrum, that humans seem to gravitate towards  - black & white.

It could be argued that both demonstrate a lack of imagination in the chooser, however I would suggest;

  • Black - conations of death & violence. Very dramatic. Absorbs heat, shows every scatch / spec of dirt, hard to maintain and has low visibility, in certain light conditions. Much loved by those wishing to project a hard image - Totally impractical.
  • White - conations of purity &  peace. Totally boring. Reflects heat, doesn't show dirt, relativly easy to mainatine and has relativly high visibility in most but not all climatic conditions. Very popular with the utilitarian leaning crowd. Possibly the most practical colour to paint an aircraft (any vehicle)😈

jabirus have to be gloss white .  if they were black they might get a bit saggy on a hot day

I'm one of the not so traditional colour types. It will be very contemporary. Im liking the Areo ones from Aircraft Spruce. One on the tail and one underneath makes perfect sense. Maybe even some leds in a wig wag for the frontal.

Funny about the jeep. I had a wk2 Diesel for 10 years. Just for rid of it for a Cherry.
