That was a strobe. One on each wing tip . Mine has them.

Did you hear how much his fees were up there.

My point is simple - In Day VFR conditions , (prevalent in the whole video)  lights of any description, do almost nothing to enhance conspicuousity.

They have but three functions;

  • To place an additional load on the aircraft's electrical generation/storage system
  • Place an additional financial cost (acquisition of frivolous/luxury item)on the aircraft owner
  • Bragging rights for the deluded pilot/owner

Note: I support the right of all humans to engage in delusion, as long as it has no negative impacts on others (this would be an example).😈

Yes however the exorbitant fees quoted, are not what my concern (at this time), its the failure to publish the fess in ERSA (staying on track)😈

Look up the video for the real charges ..

I did contribute a little of my time.

The fees are based on weight for Private Pilots and weight plus passengers for Commercial.

I plugged in Private, 760 kg MTOW and the landing fee was $19.20

Overnight parking: Private, 760 kg MTOW was $8.00

Total for Land and Overnight $27.20

You'll note he says "We were charged fees for the Terminal we were told we couldn't use."

HI has two terminals, Private AC, and RPT/Charter (where passenger and other charges apply.

From the figures quoted and the comments, it looks to me like they used the RPT Terminal, where a higher set of fees related to commercial flights are charged. The RPT/Charter fees also are not hard to find.

Re the beacons, The Nav lights are not usually turned on during the day because they wouldn't make a difference, but the beacons are usually switched on at Pre-Takeoff checks, and switched off at After Landing checks.

We had a thread on that some years ago, but RA aircraft beacons are still very low intensity and there's no formal procedure.

It's worth having a look at these videos and picking the engine failure choices and how you would plan the flights.

Turbo, you missed the passenger charge, it applies to arrival and departure, i calculated $53.20 x 2 for a 4 seat aircraft.  Total cost for a J400 overnight stop about $150.

Good idea to call the ARO before going to remote airports.

it's not worth spending too much time on this, but they say passenger charges do not apply for private flights [ at the private terminal]. Of course if you blast in, park at the Commercial Terminal, you're going to be identified as using it, so Commercial, so seats apply.

They didn't use the rpt side. They told not too but got charged anyway.

The bloke said his bill was $600 for 4 days at horn .

Like you say not worth dwelling on. I just thought it was interesting considering this topic.

I agree - A call to the ARO is highly desirable, if there is any doubt about airfield condition, however landing fees should already be known  ie published in ERSA😈

The landing fees and charges at Horn island are somewhat complex and would result in a very large ERSA entry.

I wonder what the 'Rest of the Story' is...

If this charge was 'wrong', why wasn't it contested ...

instead of just complained about in a YouTube video.

He did say they got nothing back from the council. They tried.

And every day past the due date the bill goes up 7 percent.

I don't plan on going there any time soon so it doesn't bother me.😁

I loved the Jab's rear door in the first or second video, you could see the sky all round the door. Must have been noisy.

FYI:

Its taken multiple phone calls & letter drafts - have now written to Airservices Australia (publishers of ERSA) with cc to CASA, as they oversee the ERSA content.

So far all of the phone contacts have been very sympathetic (no commitment) to the idea that landing & other airfield fees, should be published in ERSA.

I have little doubt that my Quixotic tilting at, the Airservices/CASA,windmills, will have little effect, however its important to me to try and make good, what I see as a failing by most airfield owners, to comply with the right of every Australian to have presented to them, before commiting, fees/charges that may be demanded for a good or service.

Will report back when/if anything of note results😈

I'm still waiting for Piper Field - Bathurst Soaring Club - to put up some narrative in ERSA.
