red750 Posted August 18, 2020 Posted August 18, 2020 The Showcase has reached the following milestones: Over 400 profiles Over 25,000 views Over 100 Recreational 3 axis. 90 GA Single Engine. Maybe being incarcerated in heavy lockdown has some positive outcomes. 2 1
old man emu Posted August 18, 2020 Posted August 18, 2020 Curse you, Red Baron! Now I will definitely have to get stuck into my task of transcribing the data for Army Registration Numbers of WWll Indian and Harley-Davidson motorcycles into a spreadsheet database.
pmccarthy Posted August 18, 2020 Posted August 18, 2020 I am writing a one page history of each 19th century gold mine in my list. Up to 140 so far. I admire perseverance in these endeavours. Well done Red. 1
old man emu Posted August 19, 2020 Posted August 19, 2020 A huge thank you Red from every site user I am writing a one page history of each 19th century gold mine in my list. See, Ian, there is a lot of scope either here or in the other site for non-aviation categories
red750 Posted August 20, 2020 Author Posted August 20, 2020 As a matter of interest, 400 profiles with an average of 5 images per profile, means 2,000 photos to be located, selected and edited. Some need to be cropped, most resized, occasionally straightening, and a few need adjustment to brightness, contrast and colour correction. To locate those suitable images may mean looking at a few thousand images and rejecting most for any number of reasons. Time consuming, but interesting. And I have more for upcoming profiles.
red750 Posted March 9, 2021 Author Posted March 9, 2021 You might find these stats interesting. I created some spreadsheets this weekend to monitor the Aircraft showcase and help identify what aircraft still have to be done, and identify any duplications. I added the view count as I did it. This is the summary. The three most viewed aircraft are the Smyth Sidewinder (307), Bede BD5 (297) and the Stipa Caproni (288). 4 2
red750 Posted March 9, 2021 Author Posted March 9, 2021 Another surprising stat is that the most popular aircraft in the Airliners category is the Bristol Type 170 Freighter, with 252 views. It is also by far and away the most viewed photo in my airport-data.com gallery. 2 1
red750 Posted March 23, 2021 Author Posted March 23, 2021 Interesting. I try and avoid using photos from airliners.com, even though they are some of the best, and sometimes the only photos of a particular aircraft, because I know about their copyright rules. However recently, when I search for an aircraft and select Images, if I click on an image from airliners.net I get the error message below. I can see the search thumbnail, but not the large picture. I have just updated the above spreadsheets, and the total views as at today is 67,327.
red750 Posted April 15, 2021 Author Posted April 15, 2021 I have now completed 750 profiles, in addition to O.M.E's 6. I might take a break for a while, as it's becoming harder to find aircraft to profile, and my wife is sick of me spending so much time on the computer. 4 1
IBob Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 I have enjoyed dipping into your postings here, Red. Thank you for your time and your effort......) 1 1
spacesailor Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 I also will give my whole hearted thanks, Great work, OR Is it an enjoyable Passion. spacesailor 1 1
red750 Posted April 16, 2021 Author Posted April 16, 2021 It started out as a challenge from former member Robbo who suggested me to Ian. It became an enjoyable passion, as you put it, and during the long lockdown, it kinda saved my sanity and helped stave off Alzheimers. May even have prevented depression when the Men's Shed was closed due to Covid. Just think, if I'd been paid $2 per profile, and thats's way below any normal hourly rate, I'd be $1500 richer. My donation to the site. The numbers are actually quite a few more than that, because I had done a few on an older version of the forum which couldn't be transferred, and had to be redone. 1
red750 Posted April 19, 2021 Author Posted April 19, 2021 Just spent the last couple of hours updating my stats spreadsheets. Views now total 80,260. 1
red750 Posted July 2, 2021 Author Posted July 2, 2021 The Aircraft section is still popular - here are the latest figures as at 2/7/21. Ian, any progress on getting these stats off the system without having to enter them into spreadsheets?
red750 Posted November 15, 2021 Author Posted November 15, 2021 The Men's Shed opened for the first time since lockdown 6. I took my laptop ,and with the internet on the Shed PC and Excel on my laptop, I came up with the current stats. There has to be a better way than transcribing figures for over 4 hours.
red750 Posted November 11, 2022 Author Posted November 11, 2022 Total profiles has now reached.... 1,400. That's too many to sit and enter the view counts into spreadsheets. Someone needs to get a computer to do that. 2
facthunter Posted November 11, 2022 Posted November 11, 2022 Re the Bristol Freighter it was a very noisy plane and lost a few wings in flight. It was often referred to as the Bristol Frightener. Nev 1
Admin Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Found an aircraft not in the register @red750 https://www.ladbible.com/community/md160-plane-russia-abandoned-beach-20221129?source=facebookstatic&fbclid=IwAR19LPMS-b_Br8X9MUgcNGJGTDg-day0i9C-aZIMfzVwfbjWkzREpforFSE 1
Flightrite Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Doesn’t get any uglier than that freak of a machine!😂
red750 Posted December 31, 2025 Author Posted December 31, 2025 In October I set myself a goal to have 2000 profiles completed by the end of the year. This gets increasingly more complicated. Wikipedia lists thousands of aircraft, but only has details pages of a fraction of them and many are variants of the same aircraft. Also, a large number listed as separate aircraft are actually licence built versions of other aircraft. I have completed 84 profiles since the beginning of December, including 15 on Dec 31, and posted the 2000th at 11:58 New Year's Eve. I think I'll wait now till a few more models are released. 1 6
IBob Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 Thanks, red. I continue to enjoy seeing them. And I continue to be astonished at the sheer number there have been........ 1
sfGnome Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 Have you noticed that it seems that the majority of new ‘light’ designs are coming from Europe. Most of the ones listed from the US were designed in the 60s and 70s. There seems to be lots of different companies designing small aircraft in Europe, whereas in the US it seems that there’s just Vans, Sonex, Rams and Zenith with Vans dominating. (Disclaimer! This is just a thought bubble. Happy to be corrected). 1 1
red750 Posted January 1 Author Posted January 1 The thing that intrigues me is that Canadians don't seem to have cameras or smart phones. airport-data.com have pages of Canadian build aircraft listed (registrations, construction numbers, etc.) but no photos. They are possibly high-winged floatplanes, but you wouldn't know, you don't know what they look like. Often a web search for the aircraft doesn't bring up a photo. And all weight shift aircraft look pretty much alike. All these aircraft and only one photograph - 1
