    Hi BC105, Even from my Windows laptop I had the interminable "Please Wait" message on the page asking for the amount I was claiming. I had to kill and resubmit several times before it worked. Fortunately it had saved the rest of my application so I was taken straight to the Amount page. Government app does not work properly anywhere!! Cheers, Neil

    Hi J_A, Many moons ago, when I was a young lad, a friend and I used to fly from Southend to Le Touquet. I have fond memories of eating steak and chips at a cafe in town, going on the go-kart track at the seafront (is that still there?), buying some baguettes, vin et fromage, plus duty-frees, then flying home. A brilliant day out. I don't remember ever showing a passport at Le Touquet, although I seem to remember we did at Southend. Cheers, Neil

    Hi Garry, I wear a Nomex flying suit over normal clothes - flame resistant and quite warm. Multiple layers is always effective. I reckon there are too many draughts in my Savannah S to bother with the heater. I'm from the UK and find there are few days over here near Melbourne where cold is really a problem, compared with southern England where I lived! Cheers, Neil

    Hi Jim, I've owned a factory-built nosewheel Savannah S with a 912ULS for the last 6 or 7 years with a 3-blade DUC prop. My experience with revs around 4800-5000 in cruise, usually flying at around 4500ft, is somewhere in the region of 80-83 knots. HTH, Neil

    Me too, when I used to work for BA at Heathrow. One-way to New York, arriving 2 hours before we took off, and then helicopter transfer to Manhattan. Unforgettable! As noted, small interior, but as my wife and I are not big people it was not a problem for us.

    Yes - I have called that number a few times when a bit more detailed info would be useful, eg when planning to fly through Kilmore Gap on a cloudy day. I have always found the people I spoke to very helpful and happy to assist. Sometimes it confirmed the "no go" decision.

    Actually a sensible idea as they are made of close-woven cotton which is resistant to catching fire, unlike most man-made flammable materials that are commonly worn (polyester/nylon/rayon etc)

    My 2015 Savannah S manual states flaps should be 0, 13.5+-2, 27+-2. Having checked them many times during services mine are at these values.

    I interpret "closely settled" as meaning the yellow bits on the charts, so I flight plan on AVPlan to avoid them where possible.

    Flew in to Serpentine from Penfield, arriving about 9am. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole show - so good to have such an event after 2 years of COVID cancellations. Long lines might have been a pain, but a good sign of the attendance and interest. Flew home at about 3.45 and was surprised that it was not that bumpy, even with temps at 30deg. Come on, people, be thankful that a group of locals spent many, many hours organizing the event for our enjoyment. They would have had no idea how many people might turn up, and that would be dependent on the weather on the day anyway. Air Race committee member Russell Mountjoy spent many hours mulching canola stubble, preparing the soil and planting oat seed to make the field stand out green in the middle of surrounding brown. He also put up a temporary stock exclusion fence to deter sheep looking for lunch. All this was after the original centenary event in 2020 had to be cancelled due to COVID a few days before it was due to be held. Imagine the disappointment and loss of funds that caused! Thanks to all the organizers - it's a shame that it isn't an annual event. A few pics are below.

    Hi Guy, Sorry to hear the trip's been postponed (not cancelled, I hope!). It would obviously not have been possible this month with the lockdown. Along with others I am not able to fly to Lethbridge (outside the lockdown area) from Penfield (inside the lockdown area). I look forward to meeting you when you reschedule the trip in the not-too-distant future!! Cheers, Neil

    Hi, Go to :- www.dhhs.vic.gov.au ..and search for Restrictions for those in Melbourne/Mitchell Shire. You will eventually get to a page detailing the rules for golf, surfing, fishing and boating. No explicit mention of planes, of course. However, it says you can do those activities provided you keep socially-distanced (eg 2 people playing golf must remain 1.5m apart and others should be about 100m away) and they must be done within the lockdown area. It says not to travel a long distance if they can be done close to where you live, but if your boat is moored 50kms away at the coast then obviously you will need to travel there to sail it. By implication the same must apply to your airplane - so you can travel to where the plane is hangared provided it is within the lockdown zone. No landing outside the lockdown area, of course. I think they realized from the last time that as these sorts of activities are outside, and easily done solo, or many metres apart from others, the risk is tiny, and the benefit is huge for mental health. I have this page bookmarked on my phone, so if an over-zealous cop questions it I can show them. HTH, Neil

    Hi Jerry, Love your response........ :) As for hi-viz in Australia - some airports do, some don't. Best to have one with you. My airfield does, and if the airport manager sees you without one (how does he do that??) you owe him a bottle of red. (There are some very cheap bottles of red in Australia....) Cheers, Neil
