sadly i don't think it is economically viable to bury all power lines, the inconvenience to the general populace will be a lot more than the perceived benefits to the small flying community, and with the user pays system in this country, the cost would most likely be burdened upon the already milked dry aviation industry.
therefor the only real way to lower the death toll due to power lines is to educate the pilots the best we can, maybe bring power line awareness into the training syllabus might help? especially when training for forced landings etc, make it part of the emergency landing checks? find a suitable field, and check for the possible location of power lines. eg along roads, between homesteads and roads or tree lines. that type of stuff, aim for the middle of the field to lower the chances of a powerline strike near the fields perimeter... i think you get me drift..
just as the dangers of flying in bad weather and storm fronts are taught..

This is my Vampire as it is now...
I am thinking of a repaint, all red areas will be painted Gloss Black, the rest will remain polished alloy, the Sadler vampire writing will be painted in Matt Black...
what ya think??
also thinking of trimming the cockpit in tan leather...

those photos would make great educational tools in highlighting how difficult it is to see powerlines until its too late, even when the conditions are favourable as they are in the pics, the light behind the pilot and the lines cant be seen until your pretty much on top of them.... can these photos be used and shared to highlight this danger???

Just browsing the BOM site weather radar images, watching the storm approach my place, when i decided to have a look at twhats going on over WA side of things,
Its 930 pm in Syd, and it looks like George is about to make landfall in Port Headland....
the Eye can easily be seen, the small island is almost in the eye, on the radar loop you can see the storms rotation, on the 256km scale you can see the entire 400 km wide storm...

being a composite structures guy, we made a nice little earn ofter the big hail storms that hit sydney some years ago! though the approved repair was nothing but a layer of Bog!! i wouldnt be surprised if we added at least 250 Kg of weight in Bog to those aircraft! (the QF 747,s that is)

Just flicked on Channel 10 for the news, and the signal is sketchy at best, must be some storm activity on the central coast... ill check the weather radar, yep, storms it is....

i remember reading recently, that following studies of Ice cores from the mountains of south America, it has been found that El Nino and el nina events can last up to 160 Yrs!! and the 5 yrs we have had it it relatively short!
could you imageine the mess we would be in if this one lasted another 150 yrs!!
some things that have me thinking, being an Australian, in an Aussie climate, is why are we growing Rice in the Hay plains region??? why arnt all the rice fields up north, where the rain is!! on the coastal tropics regions??
and as for meat! why are we farming beef cattle? when we should be farming Kangaroos for their leaner, lower fat and a hell of a lot more tasty meats!! Kangaroo farms wont require acres of hay and other grains to feed them....
and countless paddocks on the east coast are empty, why arnt these paddock leased on good terms to farmers struggling? in Asia there isn't a square foot of land that isn't utalised for a crop, yet here on the coast many paddocks have just 1 or 2 cows or nothing but grass.

I am aiming to get there Thurs arvo or early Friday, depart cesnock just after sunrise.
my planned route is
Cessnock - brankston (to clear the restricted Zone)
then west over Singleton, Jerries plains. then onto Gulgong (it a more direct route and closer to a main highway than via Mudgee)
then gulgong direct Dubbo then descend into Narromine.. planned cruise is 8500 and 9500 return, (might need a jumper...)

I have an EX RAAF flight suite, as said before, i grew out of it when i was 20! and about 20 Kg thinner....

so its just like Bankstown was in its heyday! The radiowaves can become absoutely chockers, but that being said, most of the calls are unnecessary. At one stage during the day I made a point to my pilot passenger of going for a couple of circuits that I didn't need to use the radio. Even though there was an average of 5 on final and around 5-6 on base, it was not an issue.another thing about Big circuits, shouldnt they be all conducted within gliding range of the aircraft??
and another interesting little fact, the recommended circuit distance for a Boeing 737 is 1 mile!
back to Narromine questions. whats the traffic like on the Thursday?
-
can i have some of whatever it is??
-
Hopefully i will by flying the Vampire in from Cessnock, weather permitting, but my ground crew will be towing the trailer, just in case i cant get home, or the weather is bad on the friday (thursday) so i can trailer in and fly home... though sadly i have a lot more tiger country going up the southern hunter region over Mudgee.
what do you mean by "guided In"??? does Narromine operate a temporary control zone? or similar setup? unicom i think its called?

Just about to hit here, bit of thunder, and good rain... but looks like the cell is splitting, and will go either side of my place.... again... even so, i love this kind of weather!
though i find it hard to believe in this world, a few lightning strikes can stop sydneys train network, i was in Hong Kong a few years ago in a typhoon, not 1 train was late or service cancelled, and if the trains are 5 mins late, there is an inquiry...
-
yes. it will take off at normal speed, as the prop drives it through the air...
just as a seaplane does on floats. the prop and wing dont care about whats under the wheels..

every little bit helps, i am waiting on spares, so when they arrive i will get back into it, hopefully a few hrs after work during the week, as i have a bucks weekend planned for next weekend..
