Not to detract from the Achievement, but flying the Tasman from East to west would be easy on the nav side of things, just maintain a constant heading, Australia is a pretty big island and hard to miss.

I will be buying a savannah as soon as possible, would such an aircraft be capable of the same trip you have done? with a cruise of 85 to 90 kts, it would take a while. the quoted range is 800Km, so with the other front seat full of extra fuel, im sure its quite capable with enough range for a return trip to the mainland if a diversion is required.
my past as a professional driver has conditioned me to sit at the wheel/controls for up to 10 hrs without dramas, as long as there is a relief tube ill be fine...
Do you think a Savannah would be a good choice for such a trip?
oh and a final Question,
how much was the weather a factor in the planning of the trip? did you time the departure to co-incide with a passing weather system to improve ground speeds and range?

Now THAT is a trip report! something i have been dreaming of doing for a long time! wonder how long it would take at a speed of just 85 Kts.....

Another little tip, actually Boeing procedure on all its airliners fibreglass repairs, if the are needs or uses 3 layers of glass, place a 4th layer over the part, with about 1 inch overlap all round. this is a sacrificial layer, when sanding to get the final finish, the 4th layer will be partially removed, giving a smoother finish, and as its the 4th extra layer being sanded, its leaves the 3 repair or component plies undamaged, making for a stronger join/part/repair , and gives a smoother finish.

A bit cruel, but what the heck
RA Aus- The new hotness.
Vh and GA, old and busted.

just a little tip, when you cut out the plies of fibreglass, place the cloth mat in between 2 sheets of plastic with the resin, then you can use a squeegee to spread the resin evenly through the glass cloth without getting your hands messy, makes for a more even resin/glass ratio, and then you can draw the outline needed onto the plastic and cut the plies to their exact shape without the cloth shifting as you cut it, also with the pen marks on the plastic, the ink doesn't contaminate the resin.
peel off one side of the plastic, place the wet glass in position, and with the other layer of plastic still in place, makes life a lot easier to locate the glass with no mess or loose fibres at the edges.
once its all done, peel off the plastic sheet, and replace it with a piece of silk cloth, squash it down into the glass. when it cures, peel off the silk. this will give a matt finish that will require minimal if any sanding.

I haven't heard anything, but would be great if it does! its within easy driving distance from Syd, and a great place to fly, i know, i go up there, well to Hat Head, regularly, not to mention there is a private airstrip at South west rocks.....

ok, how do you view it?

i wonder if the recent increase in global temps has anything to do with the increasing of the temperature of the sun during its cycles, one would think, turn up the sun, things here would get a little warmer...

why cant all speeds be in Kts....
-
i have seen a similar result after the same thing happened in a Piper Archer, the only difference was instead of torn cloth, you had badly dented up aluminium. its amazing how much damage can be done in just 1 very short low speed circuit..
-
thats the reason i was taught to never fasten your seatbelt until you start taxiing..... so you can exit quicker in the event of a fire on startup.. i could imagine undoing the harness could become quite a task when in a rush to get out as a fire takes hold.

the, "enough fuel for a go around" worries me a little, i always thought ou should have a t least 45 min reserve in the tanks...

dont forget the rotax produces less torque at the crankshaft, but it has the advantage in torque amplification through its gearbox!

a windmilling prop will create a lot more drag than a stationary one.

I assume Motor Gliders would be the exeption to the rule if there is
one, i too would NOT recommend shutting the engine down in
flight! i have never done it, but it has happened once unintentionally.
i would hazard a guess that the excessive cooling of a stopped engine
in flight would make it a little more difficult than normal to restart
it.

and probably the best, easiest to read book on aircraft design...........
Aircraft Design-A Conceptual Approach
also have a few more on gas turbines, and helicopter aerodynamics and design...
but the best for use by other on the forum would be
Performance of light aircraft and the FAA pilots handbook of aeronautical knowledge

when i fly, i rarely get any service. even when 1000 ft above suburbia in Syds lane of entry..

speaking of sightings, who was the lucky bastard or woman flying a trike over stockton, in the newcastle area at around dusk. not only was the sunset beautiful, but it was accentuated in its beauty with a trike flying over the beaches, and a P51 Mustang departing Williamtown.....
all this happened around 3 weeks ago.... the trike obviously didnt depart williamtown!
