  1. yep, its a 503. only top end though. but its the learning curve bit, i have never worked on a 2 stroke engine before.

back to the weather, lat night brought storms to the lower hunter, but the all ended when they go to my place, i was so looking forward to an evening in with a bottle of red, and a spectacular light show and heavy rain... but alas, the storms faded out about 5 km away... close enough to smell and hear, but not enjoy...

  2. hmmmm where to start, this will get some long answers..... but ill try my best at some short ones..

Indicated airspeed measures the air hitting the pitot tube and aircraft.

True airspeed, hmmm as you climb higher, the air get thinner, there are less air particals, so as you get higher the indicated airspeed will remain the same (the air actually hitting the aircraft) but as its thinner, you have to move faster to get the same amount of air to hit the plane... so you True Airspeed will Increase with altitude..

Ground spped is the speed you are actually moving over the ground, air moves as a giant mass, when you are flying in that mass of air, the indicated and true airspeed will be the same, but what if that mass of air you are in is moving at 100 kts due north, and you are flying at 110 kts south, you are still flying through the air mass at 110 kts, but the air you are in is moving backward over the ground at 100 kts, so your ground speed will only be 10 kts south. but if you turn around and head north, then you ground speed will be 210 kts! your spped through the air the speed of the air mass itself over the ground..

    hope this short answer helps...

  3. well today is the first time i have worked on a 2 stroke engine, the vampire is due for a 150 hr inspection, so far i have successfully inspected the carby's change the needle setting from full lean to something more suitable and managed to re-assemble the carbies.

now its onto the piston inspection, ring inspection and replacement and decarbon..

Something i noticed was the oil on the cylinder head,

initially i thought it was leaking from the spark plug, as there was a little more than usual rev drop on 1 ignition system, but removing the head had me scratching my head..:clown:

the gasket seams to be in good order and the oil appears to be seeping from the head stud ? hmmmmm as i said before, i have never pulled apart or ever worked on a 2 stroke, let a lone a Rotax 503.

anyway, it obvious a little de-carbonising is in order... now how do you do that?? (thats a serious question by the way)

tomorrow i will be removing the cylinder barrels to check the piston rings, rod and crankshaft bearings...

any other tips from people with experience with the Rotax 503 would be greatly appreciated..

oh and spark plugs will be replace with what came out of it.... B8EGV type.

the head didnt look the best either as a result of the oil seeping

the other one didn't look too bad..

what could be causing the seeping? is it normal? leaking gasket?

though getting to this point trouble free would not be possible without the help of Keith Rule and other from the hunter flying club... thank you guys! its very much appreciated...

  4. The hangar you are parked out in front of is where i had my Vampire up until last week, its now hangared at Cessnock and i a member of the Hunter valley flying club! very nice and helpful bunch of guys and girls..

as for the $2 can of drink, Ashley from the flying school in the hanger you were parked in front of has them for $1!

having been in cessnock only just a week, i am already missing hoxton, with that toll use emergency runway the entire length of the circuit..

  5. coming from a GA background, flying Archers an Arrows, i find the jabirus refreshingly simple. though they are more complex in their handling, power changes have a more immediate effect, rudder is definatley required a fair bit in and out of turns, as they say, the rudder pedals in the piper aircraft are just foot rests. and overall they generally feel a lot more responsive. control reactions are more immediate and its easy to get out of balance in a turn though i do find the Jab a lot easier to sideslip.

even though never having flown a gazelle, and being told they are the easiest aircraft to fly, i would assume they are similar in their handling to a Piper warrior or similar.

  6. is it just me, or is the unusually high pressure HIGH been sitting in the tasman sea now for quite a long time! these humid Noreasters it has been generating for the past 2 weeks is really starting to annoy me.. i want to fly my new plane, but we have had nothing but crosswinds these past 2 weeks! and looking at the forcast, it looks like hanging around for another 3 or 4 days! this has to be some kind of record for a stationary high pressure area.

  7. thanks for that info, during flight the ball and string were pretty much straight, not showing any significant slip.

All cable outers appear to be normal, and the adjustment was made behind the seat, even though there is a removable screw on the trailing edge above the flight controls, removing this still didnt give much room to get in there and rlease the control attach bolts to lower the aileron or flap.

Unfortunatly, after all the work is done, and verything should be well, the weather is not copoerating! every weekend i have been free to commi aviation it has been windy with localaised storm cells running about, and during this week this persistant annoying 15 kt easterly has seen me push her back in and out of the hangar numerous times, just to see the wind pick up again... This weekend im off down the south coast for a camping/ surfing trip, so i might drop in to the factory on the way through and have a chat about things, and get a new nosewheel assy if the price is right..

hopefully next week after work things will be calm enough to get a few hrs in after work to get the feel of things and se if my fiddling has worked..

  8. the F15 does NOT carry Fuel in the wings.... just as the F18 and F16 do not carry fuel there either...

and if it is flying on 1 wing, then the lifting devices on the remaining wing would be flap and aileron UP to balance the lift, not with full flap deployed as in the pic. and no rudder deflection either..

  9. some rain in Syd! the wiper are on Fast speed, (something i rarely do) less than a second after the wiper pass, visibility was back to almost Zero

Taken on a recent camping trip in the Snowy Mountains, temp dropped from about 20 deg to -5 as the front passed. resulting in Snow, and this was the middle of January!

Taken this January after the New Yrs Fly in at Kempsey. I have a place at Hat Head, and this was taken from Hat Head beach (30 second walk from my place)

  10. Where did paul and the trike go after being "removed" from Wollongong? i was there a month or so ago in a duchess and noticed the trike hangar full of cessnas.... very sad, i had flown about 4 hrs in trikes with Paul down there..

  11. yep, the vampire will be there, and hoefulyl flown in from newcastle. but my ground crew (father) will be towing the trailer in case the weather turns bad,

i was curious about the chute as i initially would prefere a BRS chute, but seeing as there is no room, or extra weight allowance availible, then the personal chute is the next best option.. not that i doubt the Vampires structural integrity... but you never know, i have been very close to a few pelicans 8000 ft above the hard stuff. and i have done a few tandem jumps before.
