  1. Moneybox,You have just done a great job for the Critics of our Movement. When you build a plane for yourself. You have a special interest, because your LIFE depends on hew well you do it, and IF you are NOT sure you FIND out.. Nev
  2. What other small show has even attempted such a formidable Project.? It's a very complex engine and the Maker has no control over the installation. I don't agree with the reduction gear use of Nitriding but Case hardening would cause more warping. . Also you cannot machine Parts oval, easily. I haven't met Many Jet Captains who work on Motors or know a lot about them. They are spoiled as far as Maintenance goes and never get their Hands dirty on the Job these days so I wouldn't see that qualiication in this case as Meaning much.. It's also very likely he got off on the wrong foot early in the Game. Early in the Production of these Motors I visited the Factory twice and say good on them for even trying to do it.. I doubt they have Made much money from it, or ever will. Nev
  3. While it's a commendable Idea, It Can't be the way to achieve the Ultimate Build quality. IF you wanted to train people you'd do it on disposable little exercises first and weed out the Notably less skilled . beforehand. Nev
  4. Plenty of stuff on Line showing the Guts of the engines The later cast heads look fine by Me. Nev
  5. To many "emotive " words to take as a worthy engineering analysis. Engineers don't talk like that. Obviously intending to Imply the worst about the Engine. and the builders abilities.. Nev
  6. It's a big and sometimes deep, Ocean. There has to be a limit on what amount of effort is expended. Nev
  7. They are Not crooks and are trying hard to build a special type of Motor. . Nev
  8. I don't think Verner has made the distance, unfortunately like some many others, including the "D" Motor. which is didn't think would either. . Early Gnome and Rhone Motors have very low hours before they Needed routine Maintenance and they Only turn a LARGE Prop at about 1200 RPM with a Lot of gyroscopic effects and a high usage rate of CASTOR oil which ends up all over the Pilot.. I'd like to see a bulkier and bigger dia Prop on that Motor and reduce all possible drag Like the dummy Machine guns for Instance. Jacko's Sopwith flew fine. I can't recall what engine was in it. The NZ stuff, Like always will be a well done thing .I've seen what they do and they punch well above their Weight in these matters. Nev
  9. Women's Labour was used on a lot of WW2 aircraft in the USA. Douglas Aircraft had a Good Build Quality. In fact I've never heard any criticisms of any of the Major US Builders. . As OT above correctly states the Bristols mentioned were not Perfect that were Built here at GAF (I think) I knew a Bloke that worked there (now deceased. but he Made over 100 years) who was disappointed, however we did manage a lot with what we had it must be said. They were desperate times. . The Liberators were not a good design with handling and structural faults but were Mass produced unmodified for ease of servicing and training.. Consolidated Vultee Corp Built Catalina's.. In Australia Cabinet Makers built Mosquitoes. One of my Wood work Lecturers at Tighe's Hill Tech Did that. Claude Lamb I think his Name was... Nev
  10. Negative If the Rego on the tail is any Indication. Nev
  11. Self discipline makes old Pilots possible. Nev
  12. That was an ANSETT DC4 out of Perth Fuel system issue.. Tell people to go away when you're doing important things and IF you HAVE to Leave Make a NOTE to your self about where you were at. Shift changes have been found to be an obvious potentially dangerous disconnect Tag things. Nev
  13. Too Many "Mays". Also keep it simple. Using coolant will slow engine warmup and perhaps also make it run too cool in already cold conditions and there's more than enough water and oil Pipes already. Any under cowl source is suspect to contamination Possibilities. You want something simple that is tried and tested and Proven to work.. Nev
  14. The shrouded exhaust pipe still needs air over it when the heater is NOT being used. Nev
  15. Is it really Necessary? The faster the oil drains, the better. How can the Original fail? I'd consider putting a Magnet in it, to catch ferrous metal bits, Nev
  16. There's the Aeroplane's stated limit and your Limit. Both may be questioned. A High Wing can generally do a higher X wind than a low wing.. Rudder size and effectiveness count also . Small Planes don't have the Inertia larger ones do, so the Kick straight has to be close to touch down but better to touch down slower and on the into wind wheel (still banked) and countering the cross wind helping prevent weather cocking into wind OR wind raising the upwind wing and putting a tri gear Plane on it's nose. Nev
  17. You're going around and around in circles and still no closer to fixing your Problem. After all this. are you NOW saying there's NO problem? Nev
  18. That lay-out is a crock. It will never be any good. You ask for advice then vilify those who try to give you advice.. Nev
  19. I's a fairly thin stainless steel tank if I recall correctly. A non-offset ring spanner would be the appropriate tool. Nev
  20. I can only ask where did you get THAT design from? Nev
  21. Internal squares and allen key recesses rendered useless.. Check if your Mechanic wears a striped apron.. I've met about 5 good ones in my lifetime. IF you find a Good one hang on to him but keep an eye on who he Hires.. They are only as good as their worst Mechanic.. Nev
  22. What about stillsons? Nev
  23. Engrave or carefully stamp sheet AL about 1 MM thick. Cut it to exterior size and screw, Rivet or Glue Silastic it to Panel. Hilight it with dark enamel if you need extra definition.
  24. I can't see the Small prop doing the Job. I guess the Motor is a Rotec? A "shakey Jake" Jacobs or a Warner super scarab might do it Better
  25. The usual term is Ammeter and it measures amperes. CURRENT flow There's no significant resistance through an ammeter and excess current will kill it. so starter circuits etc aren't routed through them.. Nev
