Not a bad idea BR - until we see what they say in the Magazine.
It must be months since I raised the financial question, and the very abbreviated information handed out at Natfly was just current information. The all important 2009 equivalent, and the money in between, which is either still there somewhere, or has gone down the plug hole is still to come out.
A an uncommonly wise head on another forum correctly identified the Achiles heel of the RA Aus membership. If it goes under or comes to a halt for some reason everyone stops flying.
Now I don't think DOTARS would allow that to be permanent - there's the option of VH Registration for complying aircraft, and a new body could be established, but after reading about the time it took for a CPL who had obtained a new job, but lost it in the months it took CASA to update an endorsement, there would be a lot of people on the ground.
Now I'm not for a minute suggesting the 2011 figures are not correct or that RA Aus is in any danger this year, but when you hear the story of where we were financially in 2009 the slide is sufficient to start asking questions about 2015 or so.
I'm starting to think it might be better to call for an external Inquiry and an Administrator, but maybe the next Magazine will tell

You raise an interesting point John. I wonder if RAA have an obligation to enforce the regulations?I don't think you would necessarily be able to see rego numbers in that photo as it shows at the wing top surface.Hypothetically if a trike wasn't registered and a pilot wasn't licensed its not really any RAAus accident so would they look into it ?Cheers
John
In other self - administering sports without a Government obligation the Association has no responsibility.
They can lay down conditions of membership/participation to their own activities to comply with requests made by their Public Liability Insurer, but they can't enforce any control over someone with the same equipment (a0 refusing to join and (b) misbehaving.

There's TS's, and BTS's, and INTS's - which one was it?

The only reason I used a mile was to make the calculation very simple

slartiBassoonBathwater thought for a moment, and said "That reminds me of a poem I once heard; The elephant is a wonderful bird, it flits from bough to bough. It's make it's nest in a rubarb tree, and whistles like a cough."

Edited by Moderator - We are watching and will step in. This is a great topic and should be discussed in a civil manner.

If you are flying along and the landmarks have stopped, and you see one you recognise and you know how may Nm you've travelled, that's where you would use the 1 in 60 rule.
If you can see landmarks along your track, you shouldn't have drifted off anyway, but if you do, of course you can see where to go --- but we're not talking about that, we're talking about using the 1 in 60 where it works, and trying to give Shafs simple examples.
BTW the GPS is switched off or has had a terminal failure.

"Why the heck would Turbo want to introduce picking your tench, at this time in the NES" said the golden tinged Rodent "But I guess because they are a cyprinoid and were introduced in OZ in the 1870's, he feels an afinity to them."
"I often thought that Tubb was a pit cyprinoidal when he crossed taxiway Alpha and called the tower to say ..........................

... the north end of a southbound camel.
Now, if that camel was 1nm left of track when abeam the first oasis while enroute to making his first move toward the Riverland lass, would he still be able to alter course to avoid being pelted by hail the size of teacups and will he still be able make a ewe turn......
"No, but I can make its eyes bulge" said C** "There's always a clever d**k in every group, wether we're flying into t* or simply using a G** to navigate as L**ks is doing here"

Hadn't thought of that, but since you're well off track now and on the way to running out of fuel, how about you get to ask 6 questions at the next meeting with board members?Thought about it again, a bit more seriously. Frank & octave are right. I hope you are going to send them a cigar Turbo!Anyone like to pose another simple question to help Shafs, and now Destiny get some practice?
-
The argument against that is making two angles on the track uses extra fuel, but the advantage is you're going to see what you were expecting to see much sooner.Little degrees now make big degrees (and Nm) later
That's why instead of using the whole 90nm to get back on track I would use a checkpoint 10,12 or maybe 15 nm down the track, that way once back on track I would still have my original checkpoints to monitor my progress
-
Ok. So apart from teaching how to use 1 in 60 or solving the exam question, where does anyone actually use it in VFR flight? As others have said; If you know where you are and can see where you ought to be, then just alter track to converge. The angle doesn't matter much, except that if you are way off track an acute angle will use more fuel than necessary. If you are visual, you shouldn't be way off track.
Not true David, I did it in a Navex with an Instructor on board. Had to make a turn to a new leg after identifying a checkpoint, and located the hill and lake, but there was another hill and lake beside the first one. I looked under the verandah of a railway station at the name of the unexpected town. Should have trusted my DG.

Just thinking the same myself - levering the controls back in the tail compartment, asking "IS THAT ENOUGH OH SHIT!"
-
OK, that's two different headings, so who has it right?
For the ones who say, that;s not a lot/you look across and just turn towards your original track, I did that once on a day of poor visibility and low cloud, and in the distance saw the mountain I was tracking for. 20 minutes later discovered it was the wrong mountain.
Little degrees now make big degrees (and Nm) later
-
Is he right? (BTW there were no tricks intended, just looking for the simple answer)
-
The start. (edited the post)At 30 nm out from where? The departure point or the destination? -
Who's got the answer?
