  1. Right IG, it's for RC Aircraft.

For those who don't fly them the power top weight ratio is roughly the equivalent of a 300 hp Jab, and most of the ones I've seen flying are pulled along by thrust.

You would have to use very flimsy materials indeed to get wing failures we would see in a full size aircraft.

Maybe the principles of the calcs are the same but beware the minor differences and coefficients in any equation used in the formulae.

  2. The short answer is no.

It would make finances a lot easier for most of us if we could.

There are a few dozen threads on this subject around in the aviation world, and some of these mention specifics on the legislation.

The clues should be in the amount of training you have to do to get from Recreational Aviation to Private Pilot Licence to Commercial Pilot Licence

  3. Descent?

Most of the accident reports indicate that the aircraft continued the flight under cloud and were caught out by rising terrain or lowering cloud. Many witness reports indicate a very low flying aircraft.

Take the case I saw yesterday with low cloud in the SE Melbourne area a Cherokee came tripping out from Moorabbin into the training area.

Heading east he was looking side on to a huge cloud gradient descending to the ground on the right and ascending to higher altitude and relatively clear skies to the left.

He seemed to realise conditions were too bad for a 40 minute practice session, and immdiately started gentle 180 turn to the RIGHT.

My heart was in my mouth because I could see him spearing through wisps of cloud, then one second he was clearly visible and the next second totally invisible in cloud, and that's the last I saw of him.

He was too far away to hear the bang, but I was sure I'd hear about it on the news. Perhaps the vision vertically downwards was good enough for him to retain stability because there was no report.

I suspect that as he entered the training area he was hit by panic, and because he had always re-entered the Moorabbin Zone via Carrum (to thew right), that's where he was going regardless of the weather, when he could have entered via one of the other entry points by aviating to the clear sky then getting on the radio and asking for help.

I would estimate his height when he entered the cloud at about 400 to 500 feet, but he had turned towards the Carrum Downs/Frankston Hills, so his ground clearance was about

    200 to 300 feet.

If the cloud had been more dense, descending in this case could have actually caused a crash.

  4. Captain, thanks, I stand corrected on post #14, they do have the right

    Steve,

There was a lot of talk some months ago, that you needed time to sort out the financial situation.

So far the membership in general hasn't seen a thing.

Have you managed to reconcile the present situation against the 2009 report's assets and surplus, and to account for the massive downhill slide?

  5. Anyway Darky, I've totaled up the hours for our collective advice and come to two conclusions:

    1. When a lawyer asks a question she needs to make it very precise. I know a nice restaurant in Flagstaff Arizona right by the airfield

    2. The hours at $375.00 add up to $17,372.26 plus phone expenses of $360.00 - where do we send the bill?

  6. The 1960's date is for the last commercial oils discoveries.

Peak Oil is no agreed to have occurred somewhere between 2000 and 2010

No one is saying oil is going to run out soon, it's a big bell curve.

But having hit the top we are gently going into the downhill run where there will be pricing cycles getting higher and higher by the year.

So realistically with people's budgets the way they are, grass roots flying will use minimal oil derivatives.

That means smaller aircraft or alternative power such as solar or electric

  7. ...... best rectified by a qualified electrician ........ or with platform shoes .......... or by taking up the offers from one of those spam emails.

"I've never had that problem (aviation term for when the fan stops)." said Brine (aviation term for the corrosive facilitator feared by those that fly a recycled beer can) with his best deep and dangerous voice, (with his stomach pulled in and a cramp just seconds away) "And I've never had a problem, either, about my tail dragging (non tricycle aviation term) on the ground (aviation term for the hard bit in the down direction), or my ...................

"...nose cocked up in the stall position"

  8. I grew up with race car design where every item on the car had to be quickly demountable and replaceable, tuning items had to be readily available and instantly visible, and nothing as critical as a fuel fliter was hidden away where no one would notice it. Wonder how many engines run lean because of clogged filters?

  9. There was a commotion outside, around a very daggy looking Drifter and they noticed Bowlerover Pilot and Lizard arguing profusely

All I said was "Real men fly taildraggers" said Bowlerover Pilot

"That could be offensive to women: replied Lizard

"OK then Real persons fly taildraggers"

"Taildraggers attract the hoon element and many people object to the noise", said Lizard

"OK then, Real persons fly taildraggers and use very good mufflers"

"What about all the low flying then" said Lizard

"OK then, Real persons fly taildraggers, use very good mufflers, and don't fly under clotheslines in caravan parks"

    "What about the beach flying"

"OK then. Real persons fly taildraggers, use very good mufflers, don't fly under clotheslines in caravan parks, or fly over beaches where people are sunbaking"

"Sunbaking causes cancer" said Lizard, so you can't say that

"OK then, Real persons fly taildraggers, use very good mufflers, don't fly under clotheslines in caravan parks, or fly over beaches where people are sunbaking after applying 50 SFP suntan lotion"

"The strapline's too long" said Lizard, "No one will remember it"

  10. "Now" said Ian, Sloppy and the rest of the MachismoModeratti. "This is getting way off track (attempted pun term), as what does horse racing, and 201.168 metres (other than this being the precise take-off roll of a Szara when fitted with a 912S), have to do with an aviation forum (although they all did look at the Slopster with admiration as to his horse-like feature)."

"It doesn't say furlong, you dipsticks (aviation term), although it does refer to .................

....a thought he had that he ought to have bought a Drifter (marginal aviation term) for Nought, but he had no dough

  11. Yes they did, and the death rate was horrific but by the 1960's people started to learn about the "leans" and understand the anatomy of the inner ear and a lot of people are around today as a result. RA Aircraft usually don't have good enough instruments for instrument flying, apart from the need to be substantially trained, and conduct I think from memory at least 2 hours a month IFR in an IFR certified aircraft, so that's a lot of ongoing expense for a start.

  12. ... -e, let alone a naught-e, which is tough for a bloke with a ...............

....forty (four), who was a quick draw, after a lot of practice which made his hands sore. He shot all his competitors, particularly the ones who flew into a TS (obscure aviation term), or a CB (nasty aviation place to be) and became a bore so after he was caught with a w***e they sent him to war.

He thought that was too tough so he asked for a furlough....
